In the PU industry, the water is deeper than you think.

Also called 'polyurethane wood imitation material,' the price per ton ranges from eight thousand to thirty thousand. The cheap ones will powder after three months, while the expensive ones still look like new after ten years. What's the difference in between? It's not the formula, it's the source of the raw materials.

There is a factory in Zhuhai that makes imitation wood furniture components. Two years ago, trying to save money, they bought a batch of domestic self-skinning PU material. The decorative moldings made from it would peel off in the winter as soon as they were installed, resulting in a 15% return rate from customers. Last year, they reluctantly switched to a genuine imported brand, costing 28,000 yuan per ton, which directly squeezed the cost. Later, after asking around in the industry circle, they realized that among the imported PU sub-brands, there is a cost-saving approach that others don't know about.

To put it bluntly, the chaos in the PU industry doesn't lie in PU itself, but in the fact that you don't know which equipment, which grade, or which batch the bucket of A material or the bag of B material you bought came from.

What is PU? It is not a type of plastic, it is a family.

PU, short for Polyurethane, is a general term for a large class of materials produced by the reaction of isocyanates and polyols. It is not a type of plastic; it is a family — rigid foam is used for insulation boards and imitation wood furniture, soft foam is used for sofas and mattresses, elastomers are used for rollers and shoe soles, coatings are used for wood varnishes, and adhesives are used for composite boards.

The 'PU secondary brand' we talk about here focuses on the type used for making furniture imitation wood parts—rigid self-skinning foam and PU imitation wood particles. These materials, once made, look like wood, can be planed and nailed, are waterproof and rot-resistant. A large portion of European-style furniture's Roman columns, carved moldings, and door trims are made from PU imitation wood.

The leading foreign companies in producing PU raw materials and system materials, ranked by market share:

BASF (Germany): global market share approximately 22%, full range of Elastopan/Elastollan/Elastoflex;

Covestro (Germany): global market share approximately 16%-20%, Desmodur isocyanates, Desmopan thermoplastic polyurethane, Desmophen polyols;

Dow (USA): Global market share approximately 12%-16%, VORANATE isocyanates, VORANOL polyols.

Huntsman ranks fourth, with a market share of about 8.7%. In China, Wanhua has been aggressively pursuing the MDI field in the past two years, but in the niche areas of furniture imitation wood system materials and specialty polyols, the dominance still lies with BASF and Covestro.

PU Secondary Card: Original Factory Native Material in Two-Component System

The issue of PU secondary labels is more complicated than other plastics—because PU is a two-component system, component A (isocyanate) and component B (polyol, catalyst, foaming agent) are packaged separately and mixed on-site for foaming.

The true nature of PU sub-brands: When the original manufacturer installs the device, switches plate numbers, or experiences process fluctuations, that batch may have some individual indicators (such as NCO content, hydroxyl value, viscosity) slightly deviating from the regular A material or B material. The molecular structure is consistent with the regular brand; it's just that one item didn't meet the standard during factory inspection.

Four main sources: leftover material from starting and stopping the production line, transitional material from grade switching, batches with process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary lines.

Clearly define the boundaries: Genuine PU system materials meet all indicators and are stable in batches, suitable for high-end imitation wood furniture and export-grade decorative moldings; secondary PU system materials have slight fluctuations in some indicators, suitable for domestic imitation wood components and non-exposed decorative parts; reclaimed PU has undergone foaming or processing once and its performance cannot be restored, and cannot be used in load-bearing composite parts; recycled PU is made by crushing and re-bonding waste foam, and can only be used for low-end filling.

In one sentence: PU sub-brands use original factory native A-grade or B-grade material, not recycled material remade.

BASF——The All-Rounder of the PU Family

BASF has the most complete product line in the PU industry—from MDI/TDI monomers to polyester polyols, polyether polyols, and then to Elastopan (molded foam), Elastollan (TPU), Elastoflex (soft foam system materials), the entire chain is made in-house.

Factories that make imitation wood furniture are not unfamiliar with BASF; its rigid self-skinning system material has a very high penetration in European-style decorative moldings.

Characteristics of secondary-grade products: BASF's secondary-grade products mostly come from transitional materials of the rigid foam system. NCO content usually fluctuates within ±1%, and the foaming ratio is the same as the primary grade, but the surface skin feels slightly rough. They are suitable for making domestic-grade imitation wood Roman columns, door frames, and non-exposed decorative parts, but not suitable for export-grade high-gloss imitation wood furniture. Packaging is mainly in large sizes (A material in ton barrels, B material in bags), though small packaging is also available.

Covestro — A PU Specialist Evolved from Bayer

Covestro became independent from Bayer MaterialScience in 2015 and is a top specialist in the PU industry. The Desmodur series of isocyanates, Desmophen series of polyols, and Desmopan series of TPU are hard currency in the automotive and furniture fields. In recent years, Covestro has also been promoting CO₂-based polyols (cardyon), which is a new story in the industry.

Characteristics of alternative brands: Common traits of Covestro alternative brands are slightly fluctuating viscosity or hydroxyl value, but their reactivity and foaming process window remain unaffected. The biggest advantage of using Covestro alternative brands in factories that make imitation wood furniture is good formula compatibility—many domestic imitation wood formulas were originally adjusted based on Covestro system materials, so switching to an alternative brand doesn't require major formula changes. The imitation wood furniture factory in Zhuhai later switched to a Covestro alternative brand, and the formula hardly changed; the surface skin texture was refined from coarse to fine.

Dow — A Veteran Leader in Polyols and System Materials

Dow mainly focuses on VORANATE isocyanates and VORANOL polyols in the PU field, and its system materials are widely used in building insulation and automotive interiors. Dow's characteristics are a complete polyol product line and well-controlled molecular weight distribution of polyether polyols.

Secondary Brand Features: The indicators of Dow's secondary brand have a small deviation, and the price is slightly lower than BASF and Covestro, but the delivery time for furniture wood-like products is less stable domestically compared to the first two. It is suitable for use in wood-like furniture inner components that are cost-sensitive yet require imported polyol-based materials.

For these three pitfalls of PU sub-brands, if a furniture factory steps on one, it will lose a batch of goods.

PU veneer is used on furniture that imitates wood, and it has a lot of pits.

Pitfall One: Using domestic MDI sub-brands to impersonate imported BASF/ Covestro sub-brands. With MDI, the domestic and imported versions might seem to have similar NCO content, but their impurity levels and reactivity are quite different. Products made from domestic MDI can result in wood-like pieces that become brittle and start powdering in just three months. How to distinguish: Look at the packaging label — genuine sub-brands from the original manufacturer have complete batch numbers, production dates, and origin codes; counterfeit sub-brands have fuzzy labels and duplicate batch numbers.

Pitfall two: Material A and Material B are not from the same system. PU foaming requires matching the formulas of Material A and Material B. If you use BASF Material A with Dow Material B, the reaction activity won't match, and the foam cells will collapse immediately. Generic brands must be paired from the same manufacturer and system.

Third pit: Using it indiscriminately regardless of purpose. If the surface of a secondary brand has slight skin formation and is a bit rough, don't use it for exposed high-gloss parts; if the foam expansion rate is a bit unstable, don't use it for precision parts with a wall thickness tolerance of 0.1mm. For domestic-grade imitation wood moldings and Roman columns, the secondary brand is just right.

Acceptance actions: Measure three items upon entering the factory — NCO content (Material A), hydroxyl value (Material B), foaming ratio, and surface skin feel, then sample and seal the bags. PU is a two-component system, and none of these three items can be omitted.

Seven tips to handle PU sub-brand selection

1. Export-grade high-gloss imitation wood furniture—genuine brand;

2. Domestic sales grade imitation wood molding, Roman columns, door frames—secondary brands are sufficient;

3. Complete product line and stable hard foam system materials — recognize BASF Elastopan;

4. Formula compatibility and fine surface crust — recognize Covestro Desmodur/Desmophen;

5. Polyol base materials and cost sensitivity — recognize Dow VORANATE/VORANOL;

6. Secondary brands must have NCO, hydroxyl value, and foaming ratio tested upon arrival;

7. Secondary brand A and B must be from the same factory and same system.

For PU of the same grade, secondary brand hardness deviation is often within ±5 Shore A, with a density tolerance of ±3%. It is polyurethane from the genuine brand in the same prepolymer formula system—only the NCO content and hydroxyl value are half a notch higher during factory inspection.

That Zhuhai client who does wood-like decorative moldings used domestic PU material two years ago. In winter, a batch of lines peeled on the surface, resulting in a 15% customer return rate; Last year, imported genuine brand was 28,000 yuan per ton, and costs couldn't be managed. Later, I switched to Covestro Desmodur/Desmophen sub-brands, with almost no changes in the formula. The surface peeling rate dropped from 15% to below 1%, saving over 8,000 yuan per ton in material costs. Over the course of a year, just returning goods saved me over 400,000 yuan.

This is the value of choosing a sub-brand—not to use the sub-brand to compete in export-grade high-gloss furniture, but to capture 80% of PU performance and cut costs by 30% in domestically sold imitation wood components. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been making imported PU sub-brands for many years. BASF, Covestro, and Dow have sub-brand materials in stock year-round. They handle dozens of cases for imitation wood furniture annually. Basically, they help you test issues like "skin peeling or bubbling" before mass production.

Those who make imitation wood furniture, decorative lines, or European Roman columns—who hasn't been scammed by PU?

Is it a batch of lines peeling in winter? Or is it a batch of molds that peel off in winter? Or is it that material A and B are paired with the wrong bubbles and collapse? Or is it domestic materials passed off as imported sub-brands, and they pulverize in just three months?
