But guess what? Every winter, the ones that get damaged the most in the warehouse are precisely these 'worthless' PP items. The turnover baskets crack from the cold, the appliance casings warp so the lids won't fit, and when returned, it's a whole truckload at a time. The boss yells at the buyers, the buyers yell at the suppliers, and the suppliers respond, 'You didn't choose the right grade.' After going around in a circle, the blame lands back on the PP.

To put it bluntly, it's not that PP is unusable; it's that many people only focus on the official price list and haven't really understood that PP also has a demonized middle option — the secondary brand. PP is so light that it can float on water

PP, scientifically named polypropylene, is a crystalline general-purpose plastic polymerized from propylene monomers. Its density is around 0.90, lighter than water, making it a rare 'slim' plastic among commonly used plastics. It can withstand boiling water, resist acids and bases, has a wide forming temperature range, is not picky about equipment, and is almost the staple material of injection molding factories.

Its world landscape is very concentrated. But the consensus is clear: LyondellBasell firmly holds the top spot, with its PP grade system and polymerization technology supplied to countless factories worldwide, making it an unavoidable name in this circle.

The main brand PP is so expensive that the cost can't be reduced, the sub-brand is used on the machine without testing, and in winter, a whole cabinet of turnover baskets all crack.

Second-grade products refer to the portion of products from the same manufacturer and the same brand that do not fully meet the technical specifications of the standard-grade products during factory inspection. What is relatively distinctive about it is the metallocene-catalyzed PP series, with grades following the Achieve line, while regular injection molding PP directly uses the ExxonMobil PP brand.

ExxonMobil's secondary brand is valuable because of integrated raw materials—it supplies propylene from its own upstream refining and chemical processes, ensuring high purity and stable ash control of the base material. The secondary brand products are often concentrated in high melt index thin-wall materials and transparent materials, with only a few showing slight deviations in translucency or gloss. These materials are suitable for manufacturing tableware and storage products with high whiteness and surface requirements but not strict transparency requirements, as well as thin-wall packaging, making them a good option for cost reduction. Applicable scenarios: thin-wall injection molding, transparent daily necessities, packaging containers.

Nordic Chemicals: Borflow series, piping and weather resistance are its specialty

Borealis, the Nordic chemical company, is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, relying on raw materials from Northern Europe and the Middle East. Its PP technology is famous for the Borstar bimodal process, and its pipe materials Borflow and medical materials Bormed are hard currency in the industry.

Its secondary brand is characterized by 'good material but small quantity.' Because it mainly targets the mid-to-high-end market, the batches of the secondary brand released are not large, but the base material has good toughness and weather resistance, often only showing slight variations in low-temperature impact or melt index. It can be used for outdoor turnover baskets, automotive interior substrates, and parts requiring certain weather resistance, performing better than ordinary secondary brands. Suitable applications: outdoor structural parts, automotive substrates, pipe fittings.

Choosing a secondary brand, avoid these pitfalls

Knowing who supplies the goods is one thing, but you also need to know how to pick them. Sub-brands, even when called 'big factory PP sub-brands,' have quite a few pitfalls.

First, check batch stability. Secondary brands naturally have fluctuating properties, so before placing an order, you should first do a small-scale trial run. Measure melt index, ash content, and notch impact yourself; don’t just rely on the supplier’s test report. Second, check the deviation direction. Whether the melt index is too high or too low, or there’s yellowing or poor light transmission, it should match the weaknesses of your product—you shouldn’t use materials with color variations for appearance parts, nor materials with wildly fluctuating melt index for structural parts. Third, check packaging traceability. When secondary brands from reputable manufacturers are released, they come in large and small packages. The original manufacturer’s markings and batch numbers on the bags should match—don’t buy rebranded products pretending to be something they’re not.

There's another common pitfall: mixing sub-brands from different manufacturers. The fluctuation directions of the two sub-brands are different, and mixing them together is 'unstable stacked buffs,' causing the yield rate to drop to the point where you'll question your life.
