Even elementary school students can do this arithmetic, but when it comes to placing the order, there are always people who get carried away and only focus on those four hundred. This is especially evident in the PA6 industry: the official BASF Ultramid B is quoted per ton, and bosses making construction fittings or cable materials grit their teeth and use it for half a year, only to realize afterward that while they saved on material costs, the after-sales compensation cost them even more.

The problem isn’t complicated—PA6 absorbs moisture, is sensitive to water, and needs to be dried before molding. If you try to use cheap material, it will show you the consequences: dimensions will vary, surfaces will have defects, and tensile strength will be insufficient. Today, let’s clarify this once and for all by breaking down the PA6 category, the three reliable foreign major manufacturers worldwide, and their subsidiary brands.

PA6: The 'practicalist' in the nylon family

PA6, known scientifically as Polyamide 6 and commonly called Nylon 6, is produced by the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam. Compared to PA66, it has a slightly lower melting point, is easier to process, and has good toughness, wear resistance, and oil resistance, with a more affordable price. It is commonly used in building material clips, cable sheaths, automotive parts, and electric tool housings. In short: PA6 is not the top performer among nylons, but it offers the best cost-performance ratio.

The global PA6 market is more fragmented than PP and PC. In pushing out mainland manufacturers, the leading players in the overseas camp include: Germany's BASF, whose signature nylon 6 is called Ultramid B; Belgium's DOMO Chemicals, with the brand DOMAMID; and Envalior, formed from the merger of former Lanxess High Performance Materials and DSM Engineering Plastics, holding the long-established Durethan line. By market share, BASF has consistently held the top position, covering the entire chain from integrated caprolactam to nylon 6. DOMO and Envalior compete closely in the segment of engineering-modified pellets. Depending on the research report, the rankings for second and third place often vary, but BASF's leading position is very stable.

The PA6 secondary card is a classmate of the main card, graduating from the same batch from the original factory, but failed one exam.

Use a subsidiary brand for PA6, first establish the concept.

Secondary grade refers to the portion of products from the same manufacturer and the same brand that do not fully meet the standard specifications during factory inspection. For the same batch of polymer products, if all indicators meet the standards, they are labeled as the main brand, while individual slight deviations in some indicators are considered secondary grade. It is still made from the original factory’s native particles, and the molecular structure of PA6 is the same as that of the main grade; it is not made by crushing and re-pelletizing waste nylon parts.

Where does it come from? Four sources: unstable material when starting or stopping the equipment (head and tail material), transitional material during grade switching, batches with slight deviations in melt flow index, viscosity, or color due to process fluctuations, and tail material from the secondary line.

You can understand it this way: it was produced in the same year as the official brand by the original factory, in the same batch, but just failed one inspection indicator when leaving the factory; the granulated material on the other hand was collected from another factory and still carries its previous thermal history. The base material is different.

BASF: Ultramid B, the 'class monitor' of engineering nylon

Germany's BASF is a leader in the global PA6 market, with its flagship nylon 6 series called Ultramid B. The company handles the entire chain from caprolactam to polymerized pellets itself. Ultramid can be found everywhere in automobiles, electronics, and industrial parts; within the industry, this brand is well-recognized.

Characteristics of BASF's secondary brand: The numbering system is mature, and deviations are usually concentrated in slight fluctuations in viscosity or melt index, but the base material's wear resistance and oil resistance are stable. Secondary brand material can be reliably used for building material clips, brackets, and non-certified structural components, much more dependable than using miscellaneous brand materials. Applicable scenarios: building material accessories, general industrial structural parts, and power tool components.

DOMO: DOMAMID, the 'cost-performance' brand from Belgium

Belgium's DOMO Chemicals is a veteran player in the European nylon 6 field, with the brand name DOMAMID. The company follows a flexible supply route, producing both modified pellets and virgin materials, and can even produce bio-based certified materials.

Features of DOMO's secondary brand: flexible batches, deviations usually occur in melt index or hue, and the base material has consistent toughness. Since it is positioned for the cost-performance market, the secondary brand that flows out is very suitable for general structural parts. Using it for building material components or cable sheathing—parts that need to meet standards but are not strict on requirements—allows for excellent cost control. Applicable scenarios: building material components, cable sheathing, general injection-molded parts.

Envalior: Durethan, the foundation of old-school German craftsmanship

Envalior is a nylon giant formed by the merger of the former LANXESS High Performance Materials and the former DSM Engineering Plastics, holding the long-established Durethan nylon 6 line, with a strong foundation in engineering modification. Its materials are highly recognized in the automotive and electronics markets.

Characteristics of Envalior sub-brand: Mid-to-high-end grades are produced, often showing slight deviations in viscosity or melt index, with a good foundation in substrate strength and dimensional stability. Suitable for use in building materials and cable materials that require certain strength but do not need excessive certification, making it more convenient than using recycled material. Applicable scenarios: building material structural parts, cable accessories, general engineering parts.

Choosing a secondary PA6 brand, this cost should be accounted for in the moisture content.

Whether using a secondary PA6 grade is appropriate depends on two key factors: moisture content and suitability for the intended use.

First, check the moisture content. PA6 naturally absorbs moisture, and if tertiary brand materials are stored improperly, the moisture content rises, leading to surface bloom, size variation, and a drop in mechanical performance during processing. Always dry the material upon arrival; this step cannot be skipped. Second, check the viscosity deviation. Fiberglass-reinforced PA6 is less affected by slight viscosity fluctuations, but for pure resin parts, viscosity deviation directly impacts mechanical properties. Third, check application suitability. For non-certified items like construction material clips and cable sheaths, tertiary brands can be used boldly; for automotive certified parts or critical load-bearing components, always stick to genuine brand materials. Fourth, check packaging traceability. Large manufacturers' tertiary brands flow out in both large and small packages, so the original factory bag and batch number must match.

There’s another pitfall: after PA6 molding, it needs moisture conditioning. The secondary brand substrate is the same as the main brand, but if the supplier isn’t thorough with the moisture conditioning process, the finished product’s dimensions will still change after a couple of months. Make sure to ask clearly about post-processing recommendations before placing an order.
