You think you're buying rubber, but you're actually buying the door for leaks

Factories that make automotive sealing strips have a clear record: when customers inspect the car, they don't measure glue, but whether the car leaks water.

Sealing strips look like a ring of black glue strips, but they have to withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees, the engine compartment's high temperatures, UV rays and rain, and even withstand deformation for decades. If you choose the wrong adhesive, in winter the strips are as hard as wire, and when you close the door, air leaks; In summer, the strips become soft and the door lifts as soon as it's closed; After three years, it powder and cracks, and on rainy days, you can keep fish in the cabin.

EPDM EPDM rubber is the flagship material in the sealing strip industry. But genuine brands are expensive, and unbranded brands worry about unstable vulcanization, so sub-brands become a cost-cutting point for experts. This article thoroughly explains EPDM: what makes it weather-resistant, who are the world's top three foreign manufacturers, and how to choose secondary brands.

EPDM's strength lies in having few double bonds and aging resistance

EPDM full name EPDM rubber, which is a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, and a small amount of a third monomer. The main chain is basically saturated, lacking double bonds that are easily attacked by UV and oxygen, so it is ozone-resistant, weather-resistant, heat-resistant, and water-resistant. It is excellent for making sealing strips, rubber hoses, waterproof membranes, and cable insulation layers.

It is divided into two main categories: one is traditional thermosetting EPDM, which requires vulcanization and cross-linking after extrusion to make sealing and rubber strips; The other is thermoplastic TPE systems that also contain EPDM blending grades. The secondary brands mentioned here mainly refer to original EPDM raw collagen coatings.

The global EPDM manufacturers are clearly ranked by production capacity. Alan New Technology, Dow, and ExxonMobil have consistently ranked among the top three globally, with publicly available industry data showing that these three together account for about 40% of global capacity; SK Chemical, Mitsui Chemical, and Kumho are also in the second tier. This structure is considered transparent in the rubber industry.

Sub-brand is not defective rubber; it is the grade where the Mooney viscosity differs by several points within the same batch from the original factory

EPDM The definition of sub-brand is the same as other categories in the series: the part of the same manufacturer and grade that does not fully meet factory inspection standards. The molecular structure is the same as the genuine brand, with ethylene content and third monomer content at the same level, only a few indicators—often Mooney viscosity, ethylene content, and volatile matter—deviating slightly.

The four main sources remain unchanged: start-stop and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, batches with process fluctuations causing individual items to exceed standards, and auxiliary line tailings. It is still original original rubber, not recycled rubber pressing sheets.

Boundary Clear: Genuine brand meets all indicators and batches are stable; Sub-brand shows slight deviations in some indicators, but base material is consistent; Re-adhesive is recycled from recycled waste rubber with large performance fluctuations; Reclaimed rubber contains a lot of fillers and batches are chaotic. Sealing strips need to be pressed for decades; using re-glue means burying leaks in door cracks, and sub-brands are the original factory material that can reduce costs.

ARLANXEO: Keltan, the world's top tier in EPDM capacity

ARLANXEO was formerly LANXESS's rubber business, now controlled by Saudi Aramco. The Keltan® series is its brand, consistently ranking among the global top in public capacity data. Its materials have a high penetration rate in the European automotive supply chain, with narrow molecular weight distribution and stable dynamic mechanical properties.

Alang New Tech's secondary brand features tight vulcanization behavior and dynamic performance; even if Mooney viscosity is a few points lower, the sealing strip's compression and permanent deformation remain intact. For automotive sealing strips that require pressing for decades, using their carefully selected secondary brand ensures good compatibility between the compound and vulcanization system, reducing the chance of failure.

Dow: NORDEL, a long-established brand in polyolefin integration

Dow's NORDEL™ EPDM is an industry veteran, relying on polyolefin integrated raw materials for good batch consistency. Its materials are widely used in sealing strips, waterproof membranes, and cable insulation.

Dow's secondary brand benefits from stable raw material cost structure and large supply volume, suitable for continuous mass production of sealing strips. Their material is often packaged in large quantities, and when extruded in bulk, Mooney is produced with minimal fluctuation. When choosing their sub-brand, pay attention to Mooney viscosity and ethylene content, as these directly determine hardness and low-temperature performance.

ExxonMobil: Regular customer for high molecular weight sealing strips

ExxonMobil's Vicellon™ series is known for high molecular weight and good consistency, with a solid reputation in automotive sealing systems, single-layer waterproof membranes, and industrial rubber hoses. They rely on integrated petrochemical raw materials, giving them a large supply radius. The main feature of

Exxon's secondary brand is good retention of high molecular weight, making it suitable for sealing strips that require strength and long-term elasticity. When choosing their secondary brand, it's recommended to test Mooney viscosity and compression permanent deformation together. Whether the sealing strip leaks depends entirely on these two numbers.

Choose EPDM secondary brands, first focus on these four numbers .

First, check Mooney viscosity. If Mooney is wrong, the thickness will be uneven, vulcanization speed will be off, and the sealing strip size will fluctuate.

Second, check the ethylene content. Ethylene content determines hardness and low-temperature performance; if two points differ, the rubber strip's hardness will differ in winter.

Third, watch for permanent compression deformation. This is the lifeline of whether the sealing strip leaks or not; secondary brands must be tested before entering the factory.

Fourth, identify the three original manufacturers' secondary brands. The original factory secondary brands of Alan New Technology, Dow, and Exxon have clear origins and vulcanization records; don't use generic brands to fill in the numbers.

Eight selection tips, soft advertising case last .

Eight tips: First, check whether the Mooney viscosity matches the extrusion process; Second, check ethylene content to determine low-temperature hardness; Third, test for compression permanent deformation before negotiating price; Fourth, identify original sub-brands of Alang New Technology, Dow, and Exxon; Fifth, select large and small packages based on production line usage; Sixth, match the vulcanization system and compound together; Seventh, use high-quality certified whole vehicle sealing strips with genuine brand; Eighth, use selected seals for general seals and hoses.

Taiyuan has a customer who makes commercial vehicle door seals. Previously, they used generic EPDM raw rubber. In winter, when temperatures drop in the north, the sealing strips became so hard they leaked when closing, and after a year of after-sales rework, there was quite a lot. Later, I switched to Alangxinke's original EPDM sub-brand. When entering the factory, they first monitored Meni viscosity and compression permanent deformation, switching the entire miscellaneous rubber to the original sub-branded plan. After two years, complaints about low-temperature air leakage dropped from over 30 yuan per year to single digits, and the cost per piece of rubber material was still a notch lower than the genuine brand.

This is the value of choosing glue—sealing strips are cheap at 500 cents, and after-sales service may cost 5,000 yuan. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing secondary labels for imported major factories for years, helping customers understand "leaks" during the selection stage. Simply put, it's about not letting the strips pay for your vehicle's reputation.
