Old Zheng opened a modification factory in Jiaxing, specializing in ABS capacity expansion and flame-retardant modification. Last month, a coatings client changed suppliers. The warehouse had a batch of Polyscope XIRAN SZ, Cray Valley SMA 1000P, and several bags of Jiaxing Huawen SMA-125, and they slept on the pallet for almost half a year. The bag mouth was a bit clumped due to workshop humidity, and the money still had the words "additives" on the ledger—in other words, dead money lying on the account.

If a client changes suppliers, they can negotiate; if the formula changes, they can adjust again, but the SMA pile in your warehouse won't just grow out of its own legs.

Obsolete material isn't an asset, it's a liability lying on the books.

SMA this substance, scientifically called styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer, looks like light-colored granules or powders, but it's actually quite valuable. Its molecules carry maleic anhydride groups and are naturally "hydrophilic"—when humidity in the air is heavy, it quietly hydrolyzes, similar to how biscuits become damp; after hydrolysis, the volume increase effect is reduced. What's even more troublesome is that SZ, GH, and 1000P grades have varying maleic anhydride contents; using the wrong ratio can result in poor compatibility. If you don't know how to classify the ingredients, mixing powder and pellets into one bag, the seller will pay you the standard price at a glance, and the good ingredients will be sold at a junk price. Over time, the color turns yellow, the label wears off, and you can't even tell the anhydride content.

SMA just sitting there won't appreciate in value; it will slowly decompose and yellow for a while.

Let me tell you a truth: Old Zheng once found a scrap dealer who drove a small truck over, circled the warehouse twice, and immediately said, "Your powder is clumped, yellowed, and mixed. I'll pay you the bulk price." Old Zheng thought about clearing out quickly, so he agreed. But after weighing, the other party started picking bags again—one bag was dirty, that had a smudged label, and they would cut off a few hundred more per ton. Old Zheng felt frustrated, but the goods were loaded, what else could he do?

The wholesaler's calculations were even more precise than your accountant's—picking out good materials and charging them by defective quality, returning trendy goods by shipping fee. Honestly, what they make isn't from scrap, it's money from those who don't understand the trade.

The vendor's quotation list is like a weather forecast—just glance at it before you leave, don't take it seriously.

Cologne New Materials follows a terminal digestion route for SMA recycling, not reselling to make a profit. Mainstream grades like XIRAN SZ, XIRAN GH, SMA 1000P, SMA 2000P, SMA 3000P, SMA-125—downstream ABS/PC capacity upgrades and coating and ink factories still use them. After grading, they are directly sold without inventory pressure. We don't pick mixed batches, slightly damp, or slightly yellow ingredients—they go into Cologne's own modified formula and digest them, just like mixing traditional Chinese medicine. If the acid anhydride content of one flavor is slightly off, the other ingredient can be added to make up for it.

Pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. We grade by anhydride content, melt flow, appearance, and whether hydrolysis is graded. Good physical properties offer good prices, mild degradation is treated as modified grade, and the price difference between each tier is laid out. Plus, with our own production capacity and long-term customers as a backup, our quotes don't fluctuate wildly with market trends. When prices rise, they chase after you; when prices drop, you ignore their calls. We still get what we deserve.

Good materials aren't afraid of no buyers; what's scary is selling good materials as waste.

The five-step cooperation process: material submission, graded evaluation, on-site pickup, deduction of payment, settlement and invoice. That's how Old Zheng's batch of materials went—he took a few photos and sent them with the grade and about three tons. After we appraised and quoted a price, we scheduled a visit for weighing. After the goods were brought back, the recycling proceeds were directly used to offset the payment for next month's purchase of KONICE modified plastics, about half offset. So the warehouse was cleared, the cash was back, and the new materials arrived at the factory. After one trip, he told me I should have handled it two years earlier.

The essence of recycling isn't selling scrap, but turning dead money into working money.

recyclable SMA covers mainstream grades such as Polyscope XIRAN SZ, XIRAN GH, Cray Valley SMA 1000P, 2000P, 3000P, INEOS styrene-collar SMA series, Jiaxing Huawen SMA-125, etc. Other brand grades are subject to physical appraisal. In terms of form, all are collected: stagnant original packaging (whole bags or loose bags are fine), moisture-absorbing and lumping material, leftover residue from reproduction, workshop grounded powder, granulator head material, and inventory tailing. Powder and pellets are reported separately for higher grading.

Three Common Misconceptions, Here's a Reminder—

"Is recycling just selling cheaply?" "The truth is: sell by grade and grade; good materials can be sold at good prices, and mixed materials get underpriced.

"Waiting for price increases?" "The truth is, SMA will only hydrolyze yellow and drop in price, and once it clumps, it's even less valuable."

"Who bids the highest price and sells to whom?" "The truth is, you bargain, weigh down, and delay payments right away, and comparing prices to the three companies actually results in losses."
