Old Liang opened a packaging factory in Nantong, and last year he followed the wave of marine plastic management and launched a PHA experimental line. But after just a few batches of new material, downstream customers thought the costs were too high and slowed down. The warehouse had Danimer's Nodax, CJ's PHACT, and a few bags of Blue Crystal Bluepha and Microstructure Workshop's PB3 series—all sat on pallets for nearly half a year. Because of workshop humidity, the bag was sticky a bit, and the money on the ledger still had 'fermented new material'—in other words, dead money lying in the account.

The new track production line had just launched, orders didn't keep up, and trial production material was pushed into the warehouse.

Obsolete material isn't an asset, it's a liability lying on the books.

PHA this substance, scientifically called polyhydroxyalk fatty acid esters, is grown through microbial fermentation and can degrade even in the sea, making it the "noble" in the biodegradable world. But it has its delicate charm — fermented ingredients naturally absorb moisture and fluctuate in batches; after prolonged storage, the surface hydrolyzes and self-adheres, similar to yogurt at room temperature. It looks intact, but the bacteria and ingredients are no longer in their original state. What's even more troublesome is that Nodax, PHACT, Bluepha, and PB3 have different technical routes and copolymer ratios. If mixed together, the resulting product strength and degradation cycle won't match. If you don't understand grading, mixing trial production edges with the original raw material in one bag will cause the seller to pay you at a single wholesale price, selling the good material at a junk price. Over time, the labels wear down, and you can't even see the production date.

PHA sitting there isn't waiting for prices to rise, but waiting for it to quietly break down on its own.

Let me tell a truth: Old Liang once found a scrap goods dealer who drove a small truck over, circled the warehouse twice, and immediately said, "Your material is sticky, clumped, and new stuff no one wants. I'll calculate the bulk price for you." Old Liang thought he could quickly make room and agreed. But after weighing, the other party started picking bags again—some dirty, some with smudged labels, and a few hundred more per ton would be cut off. Old Liang felt frustrated, but the goods were already loaded, so what could he do?

The wholesaler's calculations are even more precise than your accountant's—picking out good materials and charging them as defective products, returning trendy goods as shipping fees. Pinpin, they don't earn money from scrap materials, but money from those who don't understand the trade.

The vendor's quotation sheet is like a weather forecast—just take it one look before you go out, don't take it seriously.

Cologne New Materials follows a terminal digestion route for PHA recycling, not relying on resale to make a price difference. Mainstream brands like Nodax, PHACT, Bluepha PHA, and PB3 series are still used by downstream packaging, personal care, and agricultural application factories. After grading, they are immediately taken away without inventory pressure. We don't pick out trial production leftovers, batch mixed, or slightly self-adhesive materials—they go into Cologne's own modified formula and digest them, just like mixing traditional Chinese medicine. If the copolymer ratio of one flavor is slightly off, the other ingredient can be supplemented.

Pricing is not one-size-fits-all. We grade by grade, copolymer ratio, appearance, moisture absorption and hydrolysis grading. Original new materials offer good prices, slightly degraded materials are charged as modified grades, with price differences on the table. Plus, with our own production capacity and long-term customers as a backup, prices don't fluctuate wildly with market conditions. When prices rise, they chase after you; when prices drop, they ignore calls. We still pay what we do.

Good materials aren't afraid of no buyers; what they fear is selling good materials as waste.

The five-step cooperation process: material submission, graded evaluation, on-site pickup, deduction of payment, settlement and invoice. That's how Old Liang's batch of materials was delivered—he took a few photos and sent them with the grade and about a ton of data. After we appraised and quoted a price, we scheduled a visit for weighing. After the goods were brought back, the recycling amount was directly offset by the payment for next month's purchase of KONICE modified plastics, about half. So the warehouse was cleared, the cash was back, and the new materials arrived at the factory. After the trip, he told me he should have handled it two years earlier.

The essence of recycling isn't about selling scrap, but about turning dead money into working money.

Recyclable PHA covers mainstream grades such as Danimer Nodax (P34HB) from the US, CJ PHACT from Korea, Bluepha PHA from Blue Crystal Microorganism, and PB3 series from Microstructure Workshop. Other brands like Tianjin Guoyun are subject to physical appraisal. In terms of form, we collect all the products: stagnant original packaging (whole bags or loose bags are fine), trial production leftovers, product spouts, injection molding edges, self-adhesive lump materials, and inventory scraps. PHA is expensive and damp; the more you delay, the worse it is to hydrolyze. Report as soon as you find backlog.

Three common misconceptions, here is a reminder—

"Is recycling just about selling cheaply?" "The truth is that good materials sell at good prices, and mixed materials get pushed down at higher prices."

"No one buys new materials?" "The truth is, downstream is always using them. The real worry is that you don't understand grading and get forced down on wholesale prices."

"Who bids the highest price and sells to whom?" "The truth is, when you get the price, you bargain, weigh down, or delay payments. Comparing prices to the three companies actually results in losses."
