Old Chen opened an injection molding factory in Chang'an, Dongguan, specializing in small appliance shells. Last month, the brand temporarily changed the material plan, switching from HIPS to ABS flame-retardant grade. The pile of PH-88 natural color pellets and several bags of PH-60 black modified material in the corner of the workshop have been lying in cardboard boxes for almost half a year. Warehouse manager Xiao Li sighs every time he does inventory; the bag openings wrinkle under pressure, and the color yellows from some sun. The order has long since gone yellow, but the material remains.
Customers' orders will go yellow, but the materials in your warehouse won't get better as they turn yellow on their own.
Obsolete material isn't inventory; it's a burden occupying space space.
HIPS this stuff, to put it bluntly, is PS mixed with rubber. It's tough, but it's also delicate. It's afraid of sun, moisture, and mixing with other plastics—just like white paper under the sun. Originally snow-white, after two weeks of sun it turns yellow and brittle, and its physical properties deteriorate. What's even more troublesome is that HIPS comes in many colors—natural, black, titanium white, flame-retardant grade—mixed together. Dealers grab it and take a look, then calculate it as a standard product, and the good material sells it at a junk price.
Waiting for it to use up its own is pretty much like waiting for a scumbag to change his mind. What's even more troublesome is that when HIPS is put together in black color, it's fine to distinguish colors by eye, but it's hard to distinguish the grade. Dealers don't understand this scheme, so they grab it and take a look, then calculate it as styrene and sell the good material at a junk price.
Here's a true story: Old Chen once contacted a scrap collector who quoted a nice quote but talked fantasically over the phone, saying, "I want all of your PH-88, price negotiable." But when he arrived at the warehouse, he rummaged through two bags and started nitpicking: this bag was a bit damp, that was impure color, this batch must have been re-oven, and a ton was cut down by three to four hundred yuan. Old Chen wanted to argue, but the other person shrugged, "If you don't sell to me, there are already too many people waiting at the door."
The general merchandiser's tactic is exactly the same as used car dealers collecting cars—they first quote a high price to invite you over, then pick from the paint to mileage on site, and in the end, the transaction price falls short of what was said over the phone.
He's not here to help you deal with scrap, he's here to scavenge bargains.
Cologne New Materials follows a terminal digestion approach for HIPS recycling, not relying on resale. Common brands like PH-88, PH-88S, and PH-60 for home appliance shells are used by downstream modification and toy factories. After grading, they are taken away directly without inventory overload. We also accept HIPS plate-grade materials from Formosa HP8250 and INEOS Benling—niche grades, just processed into our own modified granulation formulas. It's like stir-frying or seasoning: the main ingredient is the main ingredient, the ingredient is the ingredients, and the inferior material is just the filler.
Pricing is based on impact strength, melt index, and color grading. Clean natural colors are offered at a good price, and yellowed ones are accepted as modified materials, with price differences on the table. Own production capacity and long-term customers provide a bottom line, and quotes don't fluctuate wildly with market trends.
Experts receive materials based on physical properties, not your mood.
Five-step cooperation process: material submission, grading evaluation, on-site receipt, deduction of payment, settlement and invoice. This is how Old Chen handled the batch — he took photos and sent them as bidding for about five tons of PH-88 and two tons of PH-60. After we finished the evaluation and agreed on a time for on-site weighing. The recovered payment was directly offset by his purchase of KONICE modified plastic next month, which was about 30,000 yuan. After clearing out half a room in the warehouse, at the end of the month, I finally didn't have to sigh over those yellow bags.
Recycling isn't about selling waste cheaply, it's about revitalizing the money that takes up space. Later, when Old Chen told his peers about this, they finally realized that when HIPS turns yellow, it's not garbage, but that they haven't found the right person to digest it.
Currently, the currently recyclable HIPS grades include Chimei PH-88, PH-88S, PH-60, Formosa HP8250, INEOS Shanyl PS HIPS series, and other mainstream numbers; LG Chem, Kumho Petrochemical, and other grades are based on physical appraisal. In terms of form, we collect: obsolete original packaging, injection-molded sprue material, appliance shell scraps, panel edges, scrap parts, and inventory scrap. Packaging natural pigments and black pigments separately can raise the grading price by a higher tier.
Three common misconceptions, a reminder for you—
"Is HIPS yellowing considered trash?" "The truth is, slightly yellowed natural pigment can still be used in modified formulas; selling it as junk is the real loss."
"Whoever sells at the highest price?" "The truth is, people quote high prices over the phone and negotiate on the spot; nine out of ten cases it's a scam."
"Is it okay to store it in the warehouse?" "The truth is HIPS absorbs moisture and yellows in the sun; every extra month of storage causes its residual value to drop significantly
