一看氯含量——配方按氯含量配的,先对氯含量;
二看门尼粘度——加工流动性靠它,飘一点就换批;
三看体系——陶氏、杜邦、日系,先问清哪家原厂;
There is a difference of two to three thousand yuan per ton between genuine CPE and off-brand CPE. For a batch of waterproofing membrane, the money saved on materials is just enough to buy a few cartons of cigarettes.
But last year, a customer who works with sheet materials bought a batch of 'imported CPE secondary brand' to save money. After laying it down, it cracked within a year, resulting in rework and compensation, costing him over a hundred thousand.
Even elementary school students can calculate this: saving two thousand per ton, but losing two hundred thousand on a project. Yet when placing orders, people always focus on the price difference per ton and forget about the project's total quantity. CPE may look insignificant, but it is the backbone material for impact-modified PVC and waterproof membranes. Today, let's clarify its secondary brand.
1. What is CPE, and where do foreign big companies rank
CPE, whose chemical name is chlorinated polyethylene, is an elastomer modified by chlorinating polyethylene. It does two main things: first, it serves as an impact modifier for PVC pipes and profiles; second, it is directly made into waterproof membranes and wire and cable sheaths.
The majority of global CPE production capacity is actually in China, with a large concentration in the Shandong area. But today we are talking about foreign major manufacturers' sub-brands—excluding mainland Chinese manufacturers, the first tier of foreign companies becomes clear.
Dow Chemical's (Dow) Tyrin is recognized as a benchmark. According to data from multiple market institutions, Dow holds about a 30% share of the global CPE resin market, ranking among the top foreign manufacturers. Following them, DuPont has a presence in specialty CPE; Japanese companies Sekisui Chemical and the former Showa Denko (now Resonac) are also producing high value-added CPE.
To put it bluntly, for the CPE category, production capacity is in China, and the technological benchmark is Dow. Buying foreign big manufacturers' sub-brands is mainly about purchasing the original materials from Dow's Tyrin system, where certain indicators fluctuate slightly.
2. What exactly is the origin of the CPE sub-brand?
▍The CPE sub-brand is a slow starter compared to the main brand — it uses the same set of chlorinated polyethylene molecular chains, but the chlorine content or Mooney viscosity is off by half a notch during factory testing. It can't be used for high-gloss parts that require primary promotion, but it's excellent for bearing impact in PVC and acting as a framework for waterproofing membranes.
Let's first clearly define it: a sub-brand product is that portion of products from the same manufacturer and the same brand that does not fully meet the technical specifications of the main brand during factory inspection. For the same batch of chlorinated products, if all inspections pass and the main brand label is applied, but some individual indicators are slightly off, it is considered a sub-brand.
The four main sources of CPE by-products: head and tail material from machine start-up and shutdown, transition material during grade switching, batches with slightly excessive chlorine content or Mooney viscosity, and tail material from the secondary line.
The key is — it is still the original factory native chlorinated polyethylene particles, with a molecular structure identical to the genuine brand, only with slight fluctuations in indicators such as chlorine content, Mooney viscosity, and residual crystallization. It is not recycled material reprocessed, nor is it sprue material remelted.
Clearly define the boundaries:
| Type | Source | Quality | Typical uses |
|---|
| Genuine brand | Original factory standard batch | Chlorine content and Mooney overall indicators are stable | High-end profiles, certified waterproof membranes |
| Side deck | Original factory substandard batch | Individual indicators slightly deviate, substrate is consistent | Ordinary waterproofing membrane, PVC impact-resistant modified |
| Recycled material / Sprue material | Processing scrap material into pellets | Have eaten hot history once | low-specification product |
| Recycled material | Recycled Plastic Pelletizing | The chlorine content is unstable, and performance fluctuates. | low-end filling |
This CPE material is used on waterproof membranes, which can withstand ten or twenty years of sun and rain exposure. If recycled material is used for secondary brands, the membrane will crack within a year.
3. Dow Chemical: The Tyrin Sign
The first one is Dow Chemical. The Tyrin brand is a gold standard in the CPE impact modifier circle.
Dow's CPE sub-brand mainly fluctuates in chlorine content and Mooney viscosity. Even a slight difference in chlorine content will change the toughening effect on PVC; a small change in Mooney viscosity will alter the processing flowability.
A factory that makes waterproof membranes uses Dow's Tyrin sub-brand. The key is that the chlorine content must match the formula—if it matches, the membrane's low-temperature flexibility and heat resistance are stable. Dow's sub-brand comes in both large and small packaging, produced by the original factory in the original packaging, and the batch number can be traced.
4. DuPont: The One Taking the Specialty Route
The second one, DuPont.
DuPont's CPE follows a specialized route and is used in fields with high requirements for oil resistance and weather resistance. Its secondary brand volume is smaller than Dow's and circulation is limited. Finding it is a matter of luck, but you must make sure it is from the DuPont original system.
A reminder here: The foreign CPE sub-brand market is a mix of good and bad. Many so-called 'imported CPE' are actually domestic materials with foreign labels. For sub-brands within the DuPont system, you need to check the batch number and the place of origin—don't just place an order because they say 'imported'.
5. Jishui Chemistry and Resonac: The Japanese Lineage
The third company discussing the Japanese line — Sekisui Chemical and the former Showa Denko (now Resonac).
Sekisui Chemical produces CPE pipes and matching resins in Japan, while Resonac focuses on high-value-added specialty CPE. Both companies have small volumes, but they follow the Japanese quality route, with stable batches and low precipitation.
To put it plainly, the situation with foreign sub-brands of CPE is like this: Dow is the mainstay, while DuPont and Japanese brands are supplementary. Before buying, ask which system it belongs to, and don't be misled by the word 'imported'.
6. Buy CPE sub-label, mark out the four pitfalls first
After talking about the big picture, let's go over a few pitfalls that people really fall into.
First, the chlorine content is the core indicator. The waterproofing membrane formula is based on chlorine content; if it's a bit off, the performance will suffer, so don't just look at the price.
Second, look at the Mooney viscosity. If the Mooney difference is too large, the extrusion speed during processing will be inconsistent, resulting in uneven sheet thickness, with one side being thick and the other thin.
Third, don't use recycled CPE for sub-brands. The chlorine content of recycled material is unstable, and after being exposed for a year, the rolls become brittle, which can lead to major problems in projects.
Fourth, batch sample paving. Waterproofing membranes are a twenty-year project; first lay a small sample to see the flexibility at low temperatures, then proceed with mass production.

7. Selection mnemonic and a case from Zhoushan
Here are a few selection mnemonics for you:
Check the chlorine content at a glance—the formula is based on chlorine content, so check the chlorine content first.
Second, check the Menni viscosity—processing fluidity depends on it; if it drifts even a little, change the batch.
Three inspection systems—Dow, DuPont, Japanese brands; first ask clearly which original manufacturer it is;
Four-step trial paving — first lay a small sample section, and only after it passes the low-temperature flexibility test will it go into mass production.
Let me tell a true story. There is a client in Zhoushan who makes waterproofing membranes for buildings. They previously bought a batch of dubious 'CPE secondary brand' products because of the low price. After laying the membranes, they became brittle and cracked in low temperatures in less than a year, resulting in rework and compensation costs of over 200,000 yuan. Later, they switched to a secondary brand from the original Dow Tyrin system. After matching the chlorine content and Mooney viscosity, the membranes passed low-temperature flexibility tests at minus 20 degrees, and complaints about cracking within a year dropped from over ten cases to zero.
