There is an unofficial hierarchy of disdain in the textile world: those who produce polyester filament look down on those who produce staple fiber, those who produce staple fiber look down on those who do spinning, and those who do spinning think that sizing work is just 'slurry mixing'.

Interestingly, when it comes to the warping sizing process, no one can do without PVA. Without it, high-count, high-density fabrics simply cannot be woven; the yarn will fuzz, break, or float as soon as it goes on the machine.

What's even more interesting is that genuine PVA is ridiculously expensive, and small manufacturers don't dare to buy generic brands casually—afraid that the solubility won't be right, a whole vat of paste could be ruined, and the entire warp of yarn could be wasted.

To put it bluntly, PVA is not some unwanted commodity; it’s that 'invisible but indispensable' player in textile pulp and vinylon fiber. This article will clarify the details of PVA's secondary brands, so after reading it, you can decide whether they are suitable for your pulp mixing vat.

PVA is not plastic; it works by being water-soluble.

The chemical name of PVA is polyvinyl alcohol, which is a water-soluble thermoplastic resin.

Note, it is different from ordinary plastics. Other plastics rely on heating and melting for injection molding, while PVA dissolves in water—slowly in cold water, quickly in hot water—turning into a transparent glue solution, which is then used for sizing, film formation, and spinning.

It can do quite a lot of work: sizing warp yarns for textiles, drawing vinylon fibers, making polyvinyl alcohol optical films (the core layer of polarizers), producing raw materials for PVB interlayers, coating paper, and making water-soluble packaging films.

The global landscape is highly concentrated. In terms of capacity and market share, the top three foreign companies are basically dominated by Japan.

The first tier is Japan's Kuraray, with its POVAL™ series, which has an annual production capacity of about 258,000 tons. It has facilities in Okayama and Kashiwazaki in Japan, Frankfurt-Höchst in Germany, and Texas in the United States, with a global market share of around 20%. Among them, PVA raw materials for optical films account for 70% to 80% of the global market.

The second tier is Japan Synthetic Chemical Industry (Nippon Gohsei, now part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group), with the Nichigo G-Polymer brand, a production capacity of about 185,000 tons, and a market share of approximately 12%.

The third tier is Japan's Sekisui Chemical, with a production capacity of about 150,000 tons, and it has facilities in Tarragona, Spain, and the United States.

These three together tightly hold the global discourse power of high-end PVA.

The secondary brand is not a defective product; the difference is that it was half a notch off on the maturity test report.

So what's the deal with the PVA sub-brand?

Let's start with the definition. For PVA from the same manufacturer and the same grade, some batches may not fully meet certain inspection indicators when leaving the factory. Those that pass are labeled with the official brand, and those that don’t fully meet the standards are considered sub-brand. It is still the original polymer particles from the factory, not recycled material re-pelleted.

Four main sources: head and tail materials when equipment is started or stopped, transitional materials during grade switching, batches with slight exceedance of alcoholysis degree or viscosity due to process fluctuations, and tail materials from secondary lines.

PVA has a special characteristic: it is processed to be water-soluble, and its degree of alcoholysis and viscosity directly determine the dissolution rate and the viscosity of the glue solution. Secondary brands often fall short in these two aspects.

Let's talk about Ke Le Li first. This company is an unavoidable name in the PVA industry.

POVAL™ is its signature. High alcoholysis degree grades are used for warp sizing and vinylon fibers, while low alcoholysis degree grades are used for PVB and adhesives. It almost has a monopoly in raw materials for optical-grade PVA films.

What does its secondary brand look like? Most of them have a degree of alcoholysis that is one or two percentage points lower, or viscosity that falls half a grade. The molecular chains are unchanged, and after dissolving in water, the gum solution's transparency and adhesion are basically at the same level as the main brand, but for work that requires extremely stable alcoholysis, such as making optical films, it is not used.

Where is it used? In textile sizing, ordinary viscose staple fiber, paper coating, and industrial adhesives. These applications are more tolerant of alcoholysis levels, so the secondary brand can fully handle them.

Then there's Japan's synthetic chemical industry. This one follows a specialty route.

Nichigo G-Polymer is its water-soluble PVA grade, characterized by fast dissolution in cold water, low viscosity, and high dispersion. It has its own patents in high barrier water-soluble films and optical grade fields.

Its by-products are commonly batches where the degree of polymerization and degree of alcoholysis are near the critical line. Compared with Keleli by-products, synthetic chemical by-products lean more towards 'marginal specification material' — it's not poor quality, it's just that some indicator on the test report is on the borderline.

Where is it used? In water-soluble packaging films, quick-dissolving components in textile sizing, and adhesives in the ceramics industry. Its secondary grade is actually more useful in situations requiring cold-water quick dissolving, because that deviation has little effect on the quick-dissolving performance.

Jishui Chemical, don't randomly recognize the sub-brands that come down with the supporting PVB line

The third company is Sekisui Chemical. Many people don't know that it produces PVA, but it is an established player in PVB interlayers and PVA resin.

Its PVA facilities are located in Spain and the United States, following the route of matching PVB. The sub-brands are mostly transition materials produced when matching their own PVB lines or batches with viscosity fluctuations.

Where is it used? Glue, fiber processing, general film formation. The subsidiary brand of Jishui does not circulate much domestically, but once you encounter it, the cost-performance ratio is quite good. The key is to clearly identify the source of the equipment, so as not to misattribute materials from other factories under its name.

The PVA secondary brand has a half-beat difference in dissolving speed, and the sized yarn becomes fuzzy and breaks.

How to pick PVA sub-labels? Let me point out a few real pitfalls.

First, ask about the degree of hydrolysis. The most common issue with PVA secondary brands is fluctuations in the degree of hydrolysis. If the degree of hydrolysis differs by just one percentage point, the sizing viscosity can vary significantly, and the yarn feel will be completely different. Upon entering the factory, measure the degree of hydrolysis and viscosity first; don't apply the plastic industry’s method of measuring melt index to PVA.

Second, clarify the purpose for matching. For high-requirement parts like optical grade and polarizing film, honestly use the genuine brand; for sizing, ordinary film formation, and adhesives, the secondary brand is sufficient. Don't force secondary brands on optical parts.

Third, check the batch samples. The viscosity of PVA secondary brand may vary between batches, so keep samples of each batch and run a small trial on one tank of slurry before scaling up. Don't just put a whole roll into the machine right away.

There is a customer in Haikou who does warp sizing processing. Previously, they bought a batch of obscure 'Japanese PVA' because it was cheap. As a result, the dissolution rate was slow by half a beat, the prepared paste’s viscosity fluctuated, and the warp yarn of the woven fabric had a hairiness breakage rate of 8%, causing an entire batch of greige fabric to be downgraded. Later, they switched to the same brand’s generic version from Kolon, and by sampling each batch to check alcoholysis degree and viscosity, the breakage rate was reduced to below 0.5%.
