But those who have really done mass production know—when used in the right place, PETG sub-brands are even more convenient than the main brand.

What is PETG? A versatile transparent part with a segment of CHDM added

PETG, full name polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified copolymer with cyclohexanedimethanol, simply put, is PET with a segment of CHDM inserted into its molecular chain. Just this one segment completely cures the brittleness of PET—it is transparent, impact-resistant, easy to thermoform, and can be printed on, glued, and used for shrink labels.

Cosmetic cream jars, transparent display racks, 3D printing filaments, medical blister packaging, they are all its domain.

Foreign companies that can produce PETG at a mass-production level worldwide, ranked according to 2024 production capacity:

Eastman (USA): Production capacity approximately 385,000 tons/year, accounting for about 27.6% of the global share, industry leader;

Mitsubishi Chemical (Japan): Production capacity approximately 312,000 tons/year, accounting for about 22.4%;

These three together account for more than 60% of the global PETG production capacity. Toray ranks fourth, with a capacity of about 196,000 tons per year. In recent years, Wanhua and Liaoyang Petrochemical in China have also been catching up, but the discourse power for high-end transparent grades still rests with these three companies.

Here's a point that's easy to confuse: PETG and PCTG are not the same thing. If the CHDM content is low, it's called PETG; if it's high, it's called PCTG. Heat resistance and impact resistance are a step higher, and the price is also considerably more expensive. When buying, don't just listen to the four words 'PET copolyester'; you need to ask clearly about the CHDM proportion.

PETG sub-brand: not a defective product, but a junior from the same batch of slices

After talking about the overall pattern, we need to thoroughly discuss the matter of side cards.

PETG sub-brand, not reprocessed material, not recycled material, and certainly not gray market goods mixed with sprue. Its true nature is: within the polymer products from the same batch, when factory inspections check transparency, haze, and color, one or two of these indicators slightly deviate from the official brand standards.

Four major sources: the head and tail materials from equipment startup and shutdown; transition materials during grade switching (for example, switching from PETG to PCTG); batches with slight deviations in color or light transmittance due to process fluctuations; and tail materials from secondary lines.

The molecular structure is exactly the same as the genuine brand, both are PET copolymer chains with CHDM. It's just that the batch sliced from that furnace had one test item on the lab report that didn't meet the standard.

Clarify the boundaries for you: The main brand meets all the standard indicators and is used for high-end transparent medical parts and cosmetic outer bottles; the secondary brand has slight fluctuations in some indicators but the base material is consistent, used for inner linings, display racks, and ordinary transparent packaging; regrind/sprue material has been through one heat history, reduced in toughness by one level, used for low-end filling parts; recycled material comes from waste bottles reprocessed into pellets, with large performance fluctuations, and can only be used for opaque, non-visible parts.

In one sentence: The PETG sub-brand uses original factory virgin pellets, not recycled plastic.

Eastman — the originator of the PETG category

Eastman was the earliest company to industrialize PETG, and the Eastar series is its flagship. Grades like Eastar GN071 and GN072 are well-known to people making transparent bottles for cosmetics or clear packaging sheets.

Eastman's advantage is that the CHDM raw material is vertically integrated in-house, the molecular chain is stably controlled, with a blue-leaning hue and low haze, making it a top choice for high-transparency cosmetic outer bottles.

Characteristics of secondary cards: Eastman secondary cards are mostly made from transitional materials between sheet-grade and film-grade, with a light transmittance usually around 88%-90% (main brand 91%-92%), slightly higher haze, but toughness and thermoformability are not reduced. They are suitable for display racks, transparent packaging boxes, and blister trays, but not suitable for high-transparency outer bottles that require food contact certification.

SK Chemicals SK Chemicals — A Representative of Korean High Transparency and Cost-Effectiveness

SK Chemicals' Skygreen series is particularly popular in the domestic circles of cosmetic packaging materials and shrink labels. Grades like Skygreen S2004 and K2012 have high light transmittance and low molding temperatures, making them especially convenient for making thin-walled transparent bottles.

SK Chemicals' production capacity is concentrated in South Korea and Malaysia, with a high share in the Asia-Pacific market, and lead times shorter than Eastman.

Characteristics of secondary cards: The commonly seen SK secondary cards are slightly yellow in hue or slightly unstable in melt index (within ±0.5), but the copolymer chain structure is intact. They are used for inner caps of cosmetic cream jars and outer covers of transparent perfume bottles, and customers can hardly notice any difference. In terms of packaging, large packages are the main type, though small packages are also available. When purchasing, make sure to identify the original factory's original package label.

Mitsubishi Chemical — Balanced Japanese Style

Mitsubishi Chemical's PETG product line covers everything from general-grade to medical-grade, with a production capacity of 312,000 tons per year, ranking second in the world. The characteristic of their PETG is balance—light transmission, impact resistance, and processing window are all evenly matched, with numerous certifications supporting its use in medical blister packaging and food contact packaging.

Mitsubishi's sub-brands are mostly diverted from medical-grade and food-grade transition materials. Their deviations in specifications are generally smaller than those of Eastman and SK, but the price is slightly higher than the first two. They are suitable for transparent parts where color matching and hygiene requirements are moderately high, but you don't want to pay the full premium, such as transparent trays for skincare products and makeup display racks.

These three pitfalls of PETG sub-brands—if you step on one, all your work is wasted.

In the PETG sub-brand industry, the problem isn't with the 'sub-brand' itself, it's that you don't know what you're actually buying.

Pitfall 1: Passing recycled material off as a secondary brand. Some people on the market granulate recycled PETG bottle flakes and sell them with a 'imported secondary brand' label. How to tell the difference? Look at the granules — original secondary brand granules are uniform, transparent, and consistent in color; recycled granules are cloudy, have black impurities, and uneven particle sizes. Grab a handful and hold it up to the light for three seconds, and you'll understand.

Second pitfall: Selling PCTG sub-brands as PETG main brands. PCTG has high heat resistance and is expensive, so using PETG sub-brands to impersonate PCTG main brands causes high-temperature tableware to deform as soon as it goes into production. Make sure to ask about the CHDM content and heat deflection temperature, don't just look at the brand name.

Third pitfall: using materials indiscriminately without considering their purpose. If a secondary-grade material has a high haze level, don't use it for an outer bottle that requires high transparency; it's suitable for inner trays and display racks. If the melt index is slightly unstable, don't use it for thin-walled parts under 0.5mm; it's fine for boxes over 1mm thick.

Acceptance actions: Before entering the factory, first measure three items—light transmittance, haze, and yellowness index (YI), keep a sample in a sealed bag, and match it to the batch. Once these three steps are completed, the risk for the secondary brand is locked in at eighty percent.
