PARA副牌,你以为在买材料,其实在买运气

Many people have a big misunderstanding about PARA: they think it is just 'nylon with glass fiber added,' and it doesn't matter if it's cheaper or more expensive, just place the order based on the price. The truth is—you think you are buying the material, but you are actually gambling on whether this batch of material has stable shrinkage and surface quality.

There is a factory in Xianyang, Shaanxi, that makes metal replacement parts for cars. In the past, they replaced a die-cast aluminum bracket with a PARA injection-molded part, aiming for lightweighting and cost reduction. They tried a batch of 'cheap PARA'—the dimensions came out right, but after being installed in cars for six months, the brackets near the engine compartment began to warp and the surface became mottled due to thermal cycling, and a batch of parts was deemed substandard by the automaker. The boss was puzzled: aren't they all glass-fiber reinforced polyamides? How could the difference be so big?

The difference lies between 'genuine original' and 'unknown source.' Today we'll thoroughly explain the PARA (polyarylamide) matter—what it actually is, why metal alternatives favor it, and how to choose sub-brands.

What is PARA, and who is supplying it?

PARA, scientifically known as polyarylamide (Polyarylamide), is listed on Solvay Ixef's official website under semi-aromatic polyamides—polycondensed from m-xylylenediamine and adipic acid. Essentially, it is a semi-aromatic nylon of the MXD6 system. It is usually reinforced with 50–60% glass fiber, has high hardness and rigidity, and its surface can be made into a high-gloss shell without fiber protrusion, making it a star material for replacing die-cast metal structural parts.

Why do metal replacements prefer to use it? Because its strength and rigidity are close to some cast aluminum and alloys, it has low density, can be injection molded, eliminates post-die-casting processing, and looks good on the surface. This is the category often mentioned in 'replacing steel with plastic, replacing aluminum with plastic'.

PARA is also a niche category. The leading foreign companies worldwide are ranked according to the actual tiers:

Solvay (Solvay, specialty polymers business now belongs to Syensqo, Belgium): Ixef is the flagship of polyarylamide, 1032 is a general-purpose grade with 60% glass fiber, 3008/9008 are 30% carbon fiber grades, a benchmark for metal replacement structural parts;

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Japan): Reny is a molding material mainly based on MXD6, reinforced with glass fiber/carbon fiber, with a coefficient of linear expansion low enough to approach that of metal, mainly aimed at metal replacement for structural components (currently produced and sold by Global Polyacetal).

The third tier consists of modified manufacturers based on MXD6/semi-aromatic systems such as Toyobo, which are relatively small in scale.

For niche materials, these two original manufacturers are the toughest, the rest are mostly modified blends, not original factory pellets.

What is a side deck? Don't get the attribution wrong.

First, get the concept of PARA sub-label straight.

Definition: Within the same manufacturer and the same brand, the portion that does not fully meet the official brand's specifications during factory inspection. For the same batch of polymer, products that meet the standards are labeled with the official brand, while individual indicators that fluctuate slightly are considered sub-brand.

Four major sources: scraps from starting and ending of production, transition material from grade switching, batches with slight exceedance in one item of glass fiber content/shrinkage/melt index due to process fluctuations, and off-spec material from secondary lines.

This is where it's easiest to misattribute: the PARA sub-brand is not a 'weakened inferior version,' but rather, within the same batch of semi-aromatic polyamide from the original factory, the fiberglass content or molding shrinkage rate is slightly off-range during batch testing, missing the exact standard of the main brand—the molecular backbone hasn't changed. The boundary with recycled or reclaimed materials:

Solvay Ixef: The Benchmark for High-Gloss Metal Alternatives

Solvay Ixef is an unavoidable name in polyarylamide. Even when reinforced with fifty to sixty percent glass fiber, its surface can still achieve a high-gloss smooth finish rich in resin layers, with almost no visible fibers, which is rare in structural parts. Its strength and rigidity are close to some cast aluminum, yet it can be injection molded.

Its secondary brand has floating variables, commonly slight adjustments in glass fiber content or minor variations in shrinkage rate and melt index. For non-appearance structural brackets or internal reinforcements, this secondary brand is sufficient; but for high-gloss appearance, direct chrome plating, or painted metal replacement housings, the primary brand or carefully selected secondary brand is required. Packaging is divided into large and small packages and is distributed according to batch quantity.

Applicable scenarios: automotive structural parts, metal replacement for electronic enclosures.

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Reny: Low linear expansion structural material

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical's Reny is based on MXD6, reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber, or special minerals, with a linear expansion coefficient low enough to approach that of metal alloys, and has dimensional stability. It mainly targets structural component metal replacement, and is used in automobiles, electronics, machinery, and construction.

Reny subsidiary brand has common fluctuations in liquidity and shrinkage rate, making it suitable for structural supports that require high dimensional stability but not high surface gloss. Its positioning is similar to Ixef, both being factory MXD6 series, so which one to choose depends on your surface requirements and supplier channels.

Applicable scenarios: automotive structural parts, precision structural parts.

Third Tier: MXD6 Series Modified Plant

Besides the original manufacturers Ixef and Reny, the market also has companies like Toyobo that modify polyarylamide materials based on MXD6/semi-aromatic systems. This tier is small in scale and has a variety of grades, and the sources of secondary brands need closer monitoring—you can use them for internal structural parts, but don’t bet on high-appearance parts that require metal replacement at this level.

For procurement, this tier is more like 'supplementing supply,' mainly supplying Ixef and Reny.

Avoid Pitfalls: What Metal Substitutes Fear Most

PARA sub-brand makes automotive metal replacement parts, three pitfalls.

1. Shrinkage rate is key. After adding fiberglass to PARA, anisotropy becomes obvious. If the shrinkage rate of a secondary brand varies, warping and out-of-tolerance issues will arise. Before mass production, first make a sample to measure line expansion and warping—don’t rely on assumptions.

2. Don’t treat "cheap PARA" as Ixef. Material of unknown origin may look smooth on the surface, but after thermal cycling it blooms and warps. Metal replacement parts are related to safety and whole vehicle inspection, and must be factory-original and original-grade.

3. Surface requirements should be distinguished. Use the genuine brand for high-gloss chrome-plated shells; it is only cost-effective to use secondary brands for internal brackets and non-aesthetic structural parts.

Selection Mnemonics and a Case from Xianyang

Selection Tip:

High-gloss chrome exterior parts, make sure to check the brand;

Internal braces, non-exterior structural parts, sub-brands can reduce costs;

Shrinkage and linear expansion should be prototyped and tested first;

Do not use unknown sources for metal replacement parts;

Recognize MXD6 series from two original manufacturers: Ixef and Reny.

The factory in Xianyang that makes automotive metal replacement parts previously suffered losses due to warping and surface defects from using cheap materials. Later, they replaced a bracket near the engine compartment with a Solvay Ixef secondary brand, first prototyped to test shrinkage and thermal cycle warping before mass production. For batches exceeding tolerance, defects dropped from a whole car to nearly zero, and the change from die-cast aluminum to injection molding further reduced unit costs. This demonstrates the value after correcting cognition—not all PARA materials are the same; you need to know which grade of original material you are buying. Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. has been blending imported PARA secondary brands for years and has handled many cases of metal replacement material selection.

PARA secondary brands do not reduce strength; it means that within the same batch of semi-aromatic polyamide from the original manufacturer, the glass fiber content or shrinkage slightly deviates in batch testing and does not hit the exact primary brand specifications, but the base material remains unchanged.
