PA4T副牌,做LED反射器的厂,为什么一到回流焊就开始提心吊胆?

At this time of year, factories that make LED lamp cup reflectors start to get headaches: after a batch of thin-walled reflectors goes through reflow soldering, some turn yellow, some warp, and their light reflectivity drops significantly. Customers want bright white light and precise dimensions, but what you deliver is a batch of yellowish 'little dishes'.

The problem often doesn't lie in the skill of the injection molding master, but in the material. LED reflectors need to go through lead-free reflow soldering, with the oven temperature going up to 260 degrees or higher two or three times. Ordinary high-temperature nylon softens, deforms, and discolors immediately. Materials that can withstand this kind of stress are few and far between, and PA4T is among the toughest of them.

But genuine PA4T is expensive, and the material for thin-walled parts cannot be spared, so the bosses making reflectors curse while looking for alternative brands. After searching around, they discovered an awkward fact: in the whole world, there is almost only one company that can truly mass-produce pure resin with this material.

PA4T: The kind of hardcore person who pushes amide density to the max

PA4T is called poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), and the monomers are butanediamine and terephthalic acid. It compresses the carbon chain to the shortest '4', then brings in the aromatic ring. The amide density is extremely high, it crystallizes quickly, and its melting point and rigidity are near the top level of high-temperature nylons. Its most crucial ability is that it does not deform during lead-free reflow soldering, it can achieve flame retardancy at very thin wall thicknesses and still meet V-0, and it also has a high CTI—this is exactly what LED reflectors and SMT connectors need.

But the structure of this category is even more extreme than PA46. According to industry data, globally, Envalior is basically the only company with the ability to mass-produce PA4T, with the grade ForTii®. It holds the whole 'C4 diamine' technology—that is, bio-based butanediamine—controlling everything from monomer to polymer. For others who want to enter, even the raw material stage is difficult. So instead of forcefully listing three 'peer players' below, let's describe the real tier ladder: one dominates, plus two peripheral competitors using adjacent materials to compete for applications.

Sub-deck general knowledge: the level in the same formula that doesn't cross the line

Let's first calibrate the concept.

The secondary grade is not a defective product, not recycled material, and certainly not a cheap product mixed with other substances. It is a batch from the same manufacturer and the same grade where, during factory inspection, certain indicators did not fully meet the standard. Aggregated from the same production line, its molecular structure is consistent with the primary grade, though the melt index may be slightly different, the color hue off by half a shade, or reflectivity-related indicators slightly higher, but it is still original factory raw material.

Four sources: leftover materials from starting and stopping production, transition materials from grade switching, batches with minor fluctuations in specific indicators, and subsidiary line leftover materials. For the same grade, secondary grades are classified into selected secondary and ordinary secondary, with prices usually lower than the main grade.

Enhuali ForTii: PA4T started this meal alone, basically.

ForTii® is the flagship grade of PA4T. It uses 'C4 diamine' to achieve a highly crystalline structure, with top-notch high-temperature rigidity and mechanical strength in its class. It has stable dimensions, is compatible with lead-free reflow soldering, and the flame-retardant grade can pass V-0 even at a wall thickness of 0.2 mm, with a CTI over 800 volts. Many LED reflectors and heat-resistant components for electronics and electrical applications are made from it.

Regarding secondary cards, ForTii's secondary cards mostly come from batches with slight deviations in hue or fluidity. For manufacturers making non-high-light, general lighting reflectors, the ability to pick and select secondary cards and prevent deformation after reflow soldering is still there. Packaging comes in both large and small sizes, and samples and mass production are selected based on usage. Be cautious: because it’s dominant in the market, there are many counterfeits and 'same name, different material' products. Make sure to recognize the original factory packaging and batch number, and don’t be tempted by unrealistically low prices.

Colpoly Genestar (PA9T): Not making PA4T, but taking its business

Strictly speaking, Japan's Kolon Genestar® is PA9T, not PA4T. But in battlegrounds like LED reflectors and SMT connectors, where 'low water absorption and reflow soldering' are required, the two often compete side by side. Genestar has low water absorption and molds well, and it is used in both reflectors and connectors.

For manufacturers with tight budgets who want to avoid ForTii's high prices, Genestar's sub-brand is a counterpart substitute—provided it suits your working conditions. Its sub-brand also comes from slight deviations in batch specifications, with the base material being the same as the main brand.

Mitsui Chemicals ARLEN (PA6T): Another Para-Route

ARLEN® from Mitsui Chemicals Japan belongs to the PA6T system, and it is not pure PA4T, but it balances heat resistance, low water absorption, and moldability, catering to electronic components for SMT lead-free soldering. Its melting point reaches 320 degrees Celsius, and it also has good fluidity.

Its secondary material source is the same as others, suitable for reflector and connector manufacturers who are already using the PA6T system and want to reduce costs. Changing the material requires redoing reflow soldering verification; do not directly apply the PA4T process.

Before getting started with the PA4T sub-card, think carefully about what you really want to take on.

The biggest pitfall of PA4T substitute brands is thinking that buying PA4T will solve everything. First, pure PA4T substitutes have a small circulation volume; the market mostly consists of substitutes with similar materials, so you need to first familiarize yourself with the grade and material system. Second, reflective devices must pass actual reflow oven temperature curve tests; don't just look at the TDP chart. Third, moisture absorption still requires pre-drying; if thin-walled parts are not properly baked, they will bubble. Fourth, reflectivity and yellowness should be measured batch by batch, and hue-related substitutes need special attention.

To put it bluntly, just buying this stuff doesn't mean you'll win; it only counts after verification.

The PA4T sub-brand matches with thin-walled rhythm, one batch more stable than the previous.

Keep the mnemonic well:

For lead-free reflow soldering and thin-wall heat resistance—use PA4T/PPA, don’t stubbornly use ordinary nylon;

High-gloss reflective parts, certified parts — genuine brand, don't skimp;

General lighting reflectors, non-high-gloss parts — the secondary brand can be used; perform actual furnace temperature testing first before mass production.

First, identify the material system and grade; do not mix PA4T, PA9T, and PA6T.

The reflow soldering oven temperature curve is measured batch by batch, and samples are taken for yellowness and reflectivity.

Thin-walled parts are pre-dried as usual to prevent bubbling;

Make sure to choose the original factory and original packaging, check the batch number, use small packaging for sampling, and large packaging for mass production.

There is a customer in Zunyi who makes LED reflectors. Previously, to save costs, they used ordinary high-temperature nylon caps. After reflow soldering, more than 15% of a batch turned yellow and warped, and the reflectivity pass rate dropped to 60%. Later, they switched to imported PA4T second-brand material, remade the oven temperature curve according to the reflector wall thickness, and rechecked yellowness and reflectivity batch by batch. The pass rate was raised to over 98%, and the per-piece material cost was even lower than the official ForTii brand. This is the accounting of matching material selection—when you get the material right, the yield stabilizes. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been helping reflector and connector manufacturers screen imported high-temperature nylon second-brand materials for many years. They handle quite a few similar cases each year. Simply put, they eliminate issues like 'turning yellow immediately after reflow soldering' during the sampling stage.
