An extruded medical catheter costs an extra eighty cents in material, but reworking it throughout the year saves the cost of two machines. Those who do extrusion all understand this calculation.

PA12 (Nylon 12) is exactly this kind of material: it has long chains, low water absorption, and is oil- and chemical-resistant. The extruded tubing is moderately soft and hard, and it bends without flattening, making it a common choice for fuel lines and medical catheters. But the genuine material is not cheap, and stocking a whole container of it puts a heavy strain on cash flow.

Many factories are eyeing secondary brands but hesitate to take action—they worry about water absorption, size variation, and the extruded batch of pipes having inconsistent wall thickness. To put it bluntly, it's not that PA12 secondary brands can't be used; it's that you don't understand how to test them.

This article explains PA12 thoroughly: how it differs from PA11, which are the top three companies globally, and whether sub-brands making catheters are reliable.

'Soft School' in Long-chain Nylon

PA12 is a long-chain polyamide with low amide density, so its water absorption is much smaller than PA6 and PA66, making it more stable in size; It has good toughness, low-temperature resistance, oil resistance, solvent resistance, and extruded pipes that are soft and do not collapse. It is often mentioned together with PA11—both are long-chain and oil-resistant, but PA12 mainly uses butadiene as the raw material, which is generally more cost-friendly than the castor oil PA11 route.

Fuel pipelines, pneumatic tubes, medical catheters, and 3D printing powders are all its forte.

The global PA12 landscape has a very clear top three: Germany's Evonik with VESTAMID® consistently leads, holding about a 20% share; France's Arkema with Rilsan®/Rilsamid® follows closely; Switzerland's EMS-GRIVORY with Grilamid® L ranks third. Japan's Ube Industries is in the second tier. All three are outside mainland China.

The secondary label is the same long chain, it's just that one box on the test sheet wasn't marked.

PA12 secondary grade refers to batches from the same manufacturer and the same grade where melt index, moisture content, or a certain mechanical property slightly deviates from the factory inspection. The long-chain molecular structure is the same as the standard grade, and it is still the original material from the original factory.

Four unchanged sources: material left at the beginning and end of parking, transitional material from grade switching, batches exceeding individual standards due to process fluctuations, and sub-line tailings.

Boundaries must be clear: official brands fully meet the standards; subsidiary brands have slight fluctuations in individual items; regrind is made by re-pelletizing the corners of extruded pipes and has a history of heat exposure; recycled materials fluctuate greatly. PA12 extrusion is sensitive to moisture content and melt index drift—if the moisture content is too high, the pipe will bubble and the surface will be pitted; if the melt index drifts, the wall thickness becomes unstable. These two points are key for acceptance.

Evonik: VESTAMID®, the leader in long-chain nylon

Evonik's VESTAMID® is the benchmark for PA12, with a full range of grades for extrusion, injection molding, and 3D printing powders. It is recognized for medical catheters and fuel lines. Its sub-brands mostly have batches with slightly different melt indices or color shades, but the base material is the same.

For non-medical contact industrial pipes and general extruded profiles, choose its selected sub-brand, which has much less financial pressure.

Arkema: Rilsan®, the classic name in fuel lines

Arkema's Rilsan®/Rilsamid® is a longstanding brand of PA12 for fuel systems, known for its oil resistance and low permeability. Its transparent and bio-based grades are also expanding. Its secondary grades have uniform batches, and its extrusion stability has a good reputation.

For ordinary pneumatic tubes and sheath extrusion, using its secondary brand is really cost-effective.

EMS-GRIVORY: Grilamid® L, a veteran in precision parts

The Grilamid® L series from Swiss EMS-GRIVORY is used in precision injection molding and tubing, with a focus on mechanical properties and dimensional stability. Its sub-brand is suitable for extruded parts that require appearance and dimensions but do not pursue certification.

Use the PA12 secondary sheet to make the conduit, first pass these three steps

First point, measure the moisture content first. Before extrusion, the material must be properly dried; if the moisture content exceeds the standard, the surface of the pipe will blister and have pimples, resulting in an entire batch of material being wasted. For secondary brands, the drying process must be strictly controlled.

One more thing, match the melt index with the grade. For extrusion, look at the melt index; for injection molded parts, look at the flow. Using the wrong melt index grade will make the wall thickness and mold filling unstable.

One more thing: use the official brand for medical contact parts. For catheters that need to be sterilized and biocompatible, don't use generic brands recklessly—the cost of failing certification is too high.

1. Medical contact, requires sterilization certification — go for the genuine brand, avoid the secondary brand

2. Industrial pipes, pneumatic pipes, protective sleeves — original factory secondary brands are acceptable

3. Dry the materials and measure moisture content before entering the factory — to prevent foaming and pitting

4. Choose the melt index according to extrusion/injection molding — don’t pick the wrong grade

5. Make sure to recognize the original factory large/small packaging, and keep a sample of the batch

6. Small batch trial extrusion — wall thickness dimension verified before scaling up

There is a client in Fuzhou that manufactures medical drainage catheters. Previously, they used a certain domestic material for extrusion, but the moisture content was unstable, and tiny bumps would frequently appear on the surface of the tubes. The client’s inspection rejection rate once reached 8%. Later, they switched to Dow and Arkema's original factory subsidiary brands for extrusion grades, strictly dried the materials and measured the moisture content upon arrival, and kept samples by batch. The return rate dropped to 0.4%, and after improving the extrusion yield, the single-line production capacity increased by another 10%.
