A few percentage points difference in neutralization changes the material's hardness and rebound.

The four main sources remain unchanged: starting and stopping the unit, grade switching transition materials, process fluctuation batches, and auxiliary line tail materials. The main risks for EMAA's secondary brands lie in neutralization and acid content—if these two float slightly, the uniformity of the foam cells in the material is affected.

Draw a clear boundary with recycled materials: EMAA's sub-brand is original original polymer particles, with molecular chains that have never undergone secondary heat history; Remixed material is recycled foam product scraps re-pelletized, where carboxyl groups may have already broken down, and some metal ions may have been lost, resulting in uneven pores of different sizes. Choose a Surlyn secondary brand, first confirm whether it's sodium-neutral or zinc-neutral—if you get this wrong, the foam material feels completely off. Then measure the acid content and melting finger, and match it to your foaming process window. Packaging comes in large and small packages; large packages are suitable for continuous foaming production lines, small packages are suitable for prototyping.

ExxonMobil: Iotek, the second choice besides Surlyn

ExxonMobil's Iotek is Surlyn's main competitor in the polymer market. Grades cover sodium neutralization and zinc neutralization, with acid content ranging from low to high. Iotek's feature is a wide processing window, and its tolerance for temperature fluctuations during extrusion foaming is slightly higher than Surlyn's—which is practical for buffer material factories, meaning workshop temperatures don't have to be so rigidly fixed.

Iotek units exist in both the US and Europe, with sub-brand materials mainly based on process fluctuation batches. Factories making foam sheets use Iotek sub-brand to replace genuine Surlyn, which lowers material costs by a considerable margin. The cell uniformity is slightly inferior to genuine Surlyn, but it is more than sufficient for ordinary cushioning pads and liners. Note: Although both Iotek and Surlyn are zinc-neutralized ionizers, their carboxyl group density differs, so the foaming ratio must be readjusted in the formula and cannot directly copy Surlyn's process parameters.

SK Chemical: A Korean Power, a Key Player in the Asian Market

SK SK Global Chemical is an important supplier in the Asian ionpolymer market, with facilities in both Korea and China. Its EMAA and polymer grades are mainly for packaging and foaming applications, with prices slightly lower than Dow and ExxonMobil, giving it a place in the Asian market.

SK Chemical's sub-brand is characterized by new batches—frequent startup and shutdown of Asian units, and a high proportion of transition materials entering the sub-brand channel. Manufacturers making cushioning materials use SK Chemical's sub-brand for Uchimura and non-exterior parts, which has a clear cost advantage. But note that SK Chemical's isopolymer grade system does not fully correspond to Surlyn and Iotek. Before installation, be sure to run a sample to confirm foaming ratio and rebound rate, and don't directly replace according to Surlyn's formula ratio.

Three pitfalls, don't step into the foam material system

First pitfall: buy sodium neutralization as zinc neutralization. This is the most outrageous pitfall of isopolymer sub-brands. Sodium-neutralized Surlyn is more transparent and hard, while zinc-neutralized is more flexible and sticky. For foam cushioning materials, you need rebound and softness, but when you buy sodium-neutralized products, the foam sheets are as hard as plastic sheets and their cushioning performance is completely useless. Add a note during sample inspection: confirm the neutralizing metal type.

Second pitfall: Acid content does not match the foaming ratio. The acid content in EMAA directly determines the nucleation density of the cells. If the acid content is high, the cells are fine but dense; If the acid content is low, the cells are coarse but few. If the acidity content of the secondary brand is two or three points higher, your original foaming formula cannot control the bubble structure. Measure the acid content before receiving and match your foaming process window.

Third pitfall: Buy ordinary EMAA as a polymer. Some suppliers sell un-neutralized EMAA copolymers as secondary brands of ionpolymers. Unneutralized EMAA has processing performance close to EVA, lacks ion cross-linking, and the foam material's rebound and strength are much inferior. The simplest way to judge: the melt strength of the ionizer is significantly higher than that of ordinary EMAA. You'll know once you run the machine — ordinary EMAA foam cannot withstand the foam, and the bubble holes will burst.
