巴斯夫(BASF,德国):代表牌号Ultrason E(PESU),聚醚砜领域的主要供应商,德国路德维希港与韩国丽水产线,份额约两成上下;
住友化学(日本):代表牌号Sumikaexcel(PESU),其官网自称全球PESU份额约两成、位居第二,千叶厂2018年扩至 neat resin 年产能六千吨;

直接接触食品、外观高光件,认正牌;
内部耐热、隔热结构件,副牌能省钱;
黄度、热变形、耐水解三项先过;
留样跟批,连续熬煮件别混批;
Saving three thousand per ton of material, losing thirty thousand on a batch of coffee machine parts. Even a primary school student can do this math, yet when placing an order, there are always people who only focus on the unit price column.
There is a factory in Kaifeng, Henan that makes core components for coffee machines, such as heating block insulation parts and parts around the steam nozzle. In the past, they always used genuine PES (polyether sulfone). Last year, the boss did the math: a ton of genuine material costs over twenty thousand, so switching to a cheaper material could cut costs. The purchasing department bought a batch of material claimed to be 'imported knock-off.' The parts worked fine on machines for the first two weeks during trial runs, but after continuous boiling tests, the plastic parts became foggy and the dimensions started to drift. Two hundred machines had to be returned by the assembler for rework, and just the labor and material costs alone resulted in a loss of nearly thirty thousand.
To put it bluntly, what’s cheap is never the material itself, but that you haven’t clearly seen what level it really falls short in. Today we’ll clarify the accounts for PES’s sub-brand—why it’s worth this price, how it differs from the main brand, and which sub-brands from foreign big manufacturers are worth considering.
What is PES, and who is supplying it?
PES, scientifically known as polyethersulfone (PESU), is an amber-colored transparent special engineering plastic that is one grade more heat-resistant than PSU. It has a heat deflection temperature of around 200 degrees, is hydrolysis-resistant, steam-resistant, flame-retardant, and microwave-transparent. It is a reliable material for heat-resistant food contact parts, coffee machine components, and medical sterilization parts.
Global PESU is highly concentrated in the hands of three major foreign manufacturers. According to market share and production capacity metrics (cross-verified by multiple industry organizations, 2025–2026):
BASF (Germany): Representing the brand Ultrason E (PESU), a major supplier in the polyethersulfone field, with production lines in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Yeosu, South Korea, holding a market share of around 20%.
Sumitomo Chemical (Japan): Representative brand Sumikaexcel (PESU), its official website claims a global PESU market share of about 20%, ranking second, with the Chiba plant expanded in 2018 to a neat resin annual capacity of 6,000 tons;
Solvay (specialty polymers business now under Syensqo, Belgium): representative grade Veradel (PESU), another major branch of the polysulfone family, widely used in medical and filtration applications.
Besides the three companies, there are quite a few scattered modified materials and OEM materials on the market, which are not within the scope of the 'original granules from major foreign manufacturers' discussion.
The secondary account: what's lacking is the metric, not the base material
For the accounts of PES sub-labels, the concept needs to be clarified first.
Definition: Within the same manufacturer and the same brand, the portion that does not fully meet the official brand's indicators during factory inspection. For the same batch of polymer, products that meet the standards are labeled with the official brand, while individual indicators that fluctuate slightly are considered sub-brand.
Four major sources: leftover material from the start and end of parking, transition material during grade switching, batches with slight exceedance of certain indicators due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from the secondary line.
It is still original factory native aggregated particles, with a molecular structure identical to the genuine brand, not reprocessed from waste materials. The distinction between recycled material and regenerated material:
| Type | Source | Quality | Typical uses |
|---|
| Authentic brand | Original factory standard batch | All indicators meet the standards, batch stability | High-demand certified components, food-contact heat-resistant components |
| Side deck | Factory batch not fully up to standard | Some indicators slightly deviate, the substrate is of the same origin | Inner parts, color-matched parts, general heat-resistant parts |
| Recycled material / Sprue material | Regranulation of processed scraps | Has undergone one heat history | low-specification product |
| Recycled material | Recycled Plastic Pelletizing | Performance fluctuates greatly | Low-end products, fillers |
The key to calculating the cost comes down to this: what the PES sub-brand saves is the money from 'individual indicator fluctuations,' not the money from 'using a different material.' The base material hasn't changed, so the basic heat and steam resistance that it should have are still there.
BASF Ultrason E: An old acquaintance of coffee machine parts
BASF Ultrason E is one of the top-selling grades of PESU. It has both food contact and boil resistance certifications, and is widely used in coffee machine steam nozzles, heating bases, and heat-resistant parts for food processing.
Its secondary brand variable properties are commonly hue (yellowness) and flow length. The main brand's heat deflection temperature and hydrolysis resistance are actually stable. For structural parts inside coffee machines that are not visible parts, insulation parts, and those that do not come into direct contact with high-temperature liquids, this secondary brand can fully handle it; but for parts that directly contact food or high-transparency external cup holders, you need to go for the main brand or a carefully selected secondary brand.
Applicable scenarios: Heat-resistant parts of coffee machines, food-contact internal parts.
Sumitomo Sumikaexcel: Self-proclaimed second-ranked membrane expert
Sumitomo Chemical's Sumikaexcel mainly focuses on PESU. The official website claims a global market share of about 20%, ranking second, and the Chiba plant has been expanded to an annual capacity of 6,000 tons. Their membrane-grade and medical-grade products have a solid reputation and are widely used in water treatment ultrafiltration membranes and hemodialysis membranes.
Liquidity for Sumitomo's secondary brand is commonly variable, with volume not being large and channels relatively limited. It is suitable for making membrane support parts and separation membrane components that require high purity but not high-gloss appearance. Its packaging comes in large and small packages, just get them according to your production batch size. Don't expect it to compete with BASF on price for coffee machine appearance-grade parts; the positioning is different.
Applicable scenarios: water treatment membranes, medical separation components.
Solvay Veradel: The Deep Water of Medical Filtration
Solvay Veradel follows a high-end route in medical, filtration, and semiconductor peripheral applications, with complete certifications and stable batches, but the price is also high. Its sub-brands have slight variations in melt index and color, while the base material is the same.
For heat-resistant parts in food applications, the Veradel sub-brand is a bit 'high-end' — performance is excessive and the price is not cheap, so it's not cost-effective for regular coffee machine internal parts; but if you're making heat-resistant parts for medical peripherals that require biocompatibility certification and repeated high-temperature sterilization, its sub-brand is actually worth considering.
Applicable scenarios: medical sterilization items, high-purity filtration.
How to calculate cost accounting so as not to lose money
For this PES sub-account, three transactions need to be settled clearly.
First point: Compare the money saved with the money lost. The material and labor costs for reworking a coffee machine are enough to cover the price difference of the genuine brand several times over. Sub-brand parts should only be used on components that do not directly affect the reliability of the finished product.
Second batch: Which items to test. For the PES secondary brand, focus on testing yellowness, heat deflection temperature, and hydrolysis resistance (boiling/steam cycle). These three items determine the suitability for the intended use, before placing an order.
Third point: Batch consistency. Different batches of the same deck may have color variations, so when cooking multiple pieces consecutively, samples should be kept according to the batch, and different batches should not be mixed.
The packaging is only divided into large packaging and small packaging, and you should be cautious of the 'special packaging fee' that appears in the quotation.

Selection Mnemonics and a Case from Kaifeng
Selection mnemonics:
For parts that directly contact food or highly glossy appearance parts, choose the original brand;
For internal heat-resistant or insulating structural parts, sub-brands can save money;
First pass the three items: yellowness, heat distortion, and hydrolysis resistance;
Keep samples for each batch; do not mix batches for continuous boiling parts;
Choose original factory granules from Ultrason E, Sumikaexcel, or Veradel.
The factory in Kaifeng that makes coffee machine parts later replaced the heating block insulation parts with Basf Ultrason E sub-brands, first conducting a continuous boiling sample test before mass production. The rework rate dropped from 200 units per batch to single digits, unit material cost was cut significantly, and the full machine manufacturer complaints actually decreased. This is what it looks like to get the cost calculation right—not buying the cheapest, but buying "enough for this level." Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd. has been blending imported big-brand PES sub-brands for years and has done similar selection calculations many times.
By keeping yellowness and heat distortion temperature within batches, PES sub-brands used for coffee machine parts do not fog or crack during continuous boiling, and can be installed and passed in one go.
