MBS这个行当,水比你想的深。同样袋子上写着“MBS抗冲改性剂”,一吨能差出两三千块。加进透明PVC里,好的那批打出来的片材又透又韧,差的那批表面发乌、一摔就裂。
更有意思的是,很多采购分不清“透明MBS”和“普通MBS”,看着像就下单,结果客户拿阳光一照,透明管件里全是雾。老板骂采购,采购骂供应商,一圈下来没人觉得自己有问题,问题都是MBS的。
说白了,MBS这东西名字简单,门道全在“核壳结构”四个字上。这篇把它扒干净,顺便告诉你,全球做MBS做得动真格的,其实就那么三家国外大厂。
MBS是什么:给透明PVC装一层隐形护甲
MBS,全称甲基丙烯酸甲酯-丁二烯-苯乙烯三元共聚物,听着拗口,本质上就是个“核壳结构”的小球。内核是丁二烯橡胶,负责吸收冲击能量;外壳是甲基丙烯酸甲酯和苯乙烯,负责跟透明PVC抱成团、不打架。
所以MBS最大的本事,是在不怎么牺牲透明性的前提下,把本来又脆又硬的PVC变得耐摔。透明PVC片材、包装膜、透明瓶、透明管件,背后都站着MBS。它也被拿去给PC/PBT、PC/ABS这类合金增韧,但主战场还是透明PVC。
这东西不是大路货。全球前五大厂家占了差不多七成份额,国外头部基本被日本和美国几家包了圆。按产能和份额口径排,第一梯队是日本钟渊、日本三菱化学、美国陶氏三家;LG化学、日本电化、法国阿科玛这些跟在后面。各家份额数据打架,有的说陶氏近两成,有的说钟渊一成五到一成八,三菱化学一成五上下——口径分歧行业里吵了好几年,我们不硬排,按梯队讲。
副牌到底是个啥:不是残次品,是同批料差在检验线
那MBS副牌到底是个啥?一句话:同一厂家、同一牌号聚合出来的料,出厂检验时某项指标没完全踩中正牌线,贴不了正牌标签,就是副牌。它的来路就那么四条:装置开停车时的头尾料、切换牌号时的过渡料、工艺波动导致熔指或色相小幅飘移的批次、副线尾料。
关键是——它还是原厂原生聚合粒子,核壳结构跟正牌一模一样,只是雾度、透光、或者冲击效率某一项小幅浮动,不是回收料再造粒。给你一张边界表,别再分不清:

钟渊Kaneka:透明PVC圈里的老资格
先说日本钟渊化学(Kaneka)。钟渊是MBS这个行当里真正的老资格,做了四十多年,KANE ACE™ B系列在透明PVC圈里几乎是硬通货,像B-521、B-561、B-582这些牌号,做透明片材、透明瓶的厂没人没听过。
它家有个底气:在美洲它是唯一的MBS生产商,全球布局稳。副牌料过来,一般是雾度或色相轻微飘移,但核壳粒径分布控制得稳,分散性好,做透明件不容易起晶点。用途上,做对雾度要求没那么苛刻的透明包装件、家电透明配件,钟渊副牌是个省心的选择。
三菱化学:从透明PVC打到工程合金
第二家,三菱化学(Mitsubishi Chemical)。这名字年轻采购可能不熟,但它前身就是三菱丽阳,MMA的底子厚得很。它家的代表系列叫METABLEN™,其中C系列就是MBS类核壳增韧剂。
三菱化学的特点是工程塑料方向做得深——除了透明PVC,它家的MBS也常被拿去给PC/PBT、PC/ABS合金增韧,低温抗冲和着色性都拿得出手。副牌料方面,它的优势是牌号体系全,从透明PVC到工程合金都能对得上号。挑副牌时,如果你的体系不是纯透明PVC而是合金料,三菱化学这一路要重点看。
陶氏Dow:PARALOID背后那位正经东家
第三家,美国陶氏(Dow)。注意,陶氏旗下那个PARALOID™ BTA系列,化学组成就是MBS——这牌子早年是罗门哈斯的,后来罗门哈斯并入陶氏,现在仍挂在陶氏名下。BTA-717、BTA-731这些牌号,做高抗冲透明片材、透明容器的厂都熟。
陶氏的份额口径常被排到前二,做通用透明PVC片材和热成型片很成熟。它的副牌料,通常是冲击效率或流动性某一项小幅浮动,做普通透明件、家电外壳里的透明视窗,完全够用。
这里多嘴一句:别把PARALOID和德国罗姆(Röhm)搞混,罗姆做的是PMMA亚克力,PARALOID是陶氏的。名字像,公司不是一家。
进厂先测什么:雾度、透光、落球冲击
MBS副牌怎么挑?给你几条实在的。第一,先认厂。钟渊、三菱化学、陶氏这三家的副牌,核壳结构是原厂的,别去碰那些说不清来路的“平替MBS”。
第二,盯死雾度和透光。MBS是透明改性剂,雾度一飘,你做出来的片材就发乌。进厂先打个小样,对着灯看。第三,落球冲击要测。抗冲是它吃饭的本事,这项掉档,加进去等于白加。
第四,看批次一致性。副牌最怕一批一个样,每批留样、每批检测,别图省事。第五,包装只问大包装、小包装。大包装成本低,适合稳定量产;小包装灵活,适合打样和小批量。
常见坑也说一个:有人把MBS当成普通增韧剂往不透明PVC里加,那是浪费。MBS贵在透明,做不透明件,CPE、其他增韧剂便宜得多。

What is MBS: putting an invisible armor layer on transparent PVC
MBS, short for methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene terpolymer, sounds awkward, but essentially it's a small 'core-shell' structure. The core is butadiene rubber, responsible for absorbing impact energy; the shell is made of methyl methacrylate and styrene, responsible for clinging to transparent PVC without conflict.
So the greatest capability of MBS is to make PVC, which is naturally brittle and hard, impact-resistant without significantly sacrificing transparency. Transparent PVC sheets, packaging films, clear bottles, and transparent pipes all rely on MBS. It is also used to toughen PC/PBT, PC/ABS, and similar alloys, but its main battlefield remains transparent PVC.
This thing is not mass-market. The top five manufacturers globally account for almost 70% of the market, and the leading foreign players are basically dominated by a few Japanese and American companies. In terms of capacity and market share, the first tier includes Japan's Chisso, Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical, and the United States' Dow; LG Chem, Japan's Denka, and France's Arkema follow behind. The market share data from each company conflicts—some say Dow has nearly 20%, some say Chisso has 15% to 18%, and Mitsubishi Chemical is around 15%—the discrepancies have been debated in the industry for years. What exactly is a secondary card: it’s not a defective product, it’s material from the same batch that differs at the inspection line.
So what exactly is a secondary MBS brand? In one sentence: it’s material produced by the same manufacturer and the same grade, but during factory inspection, some indicators didn’t fully meet the main brand standards, so it can’t carry the main brand label and is labeled as secondary. There are basically four sources for it: head and tail material when the equipment starts up or shuts down, transitional material during grade switching, batches where process fluctuations cause slight deviations in melt index or color, and tail material from secondary production lines.
The key point is — it is still the original factory native aggregated particles, the core-shell structure is exactly the same as the genuine product, only the haze, light transmittance, or impact efficiency slightly fluctuate in some aspect, it is not recycled material re-pelletized. Zhong Yuan Kaneka: The Veteran in the Transparent PVC Circle
Let's talk about Japan's Kaneka Chemical first. Kaneka is a true veteran in the MBS industry, having been in it for more than forty years. The KANE ACE™ B series is almost hard currency in the transparent PVC sector. Grades like B-521, B-561, and B-582 are known to everyone in factories that make transparent sheets and transparent bottles.
The company has confidence: in the Americas, it is the only MBS producer, and its global presence is strong. When the sub-brand materials are used, there is usually slight variation in haze or color tone, but the core-shell particle size distribution is well controlled, and dispersibility is good, making it less likely to form crystals when used in transparent parts. In terms of applications, for transparent packaging or appliance transparent components where haze requirements are not very strict, Zhongyuan's sub-brand is a worry-free choice.
Mitsubishi Chemical: From Transparent PVC to Engineering Alloys
The second company is Mitsubishi Chemical. Young buyers may not be familiar with this name, but its predecessor was Mitsubishi Rayon, which has a very strong foundation in MMA. Its representative series is called METABLEN™, among which the C series is a type of MBS core-shell toughening agent.
Mitsubishi Chemical's specialty lies in deep expertise in engineering plastics—apart from transparent PVC, their MBS is often used to toughen PC/PBT and PC/ABS alloys, with notable low-temperature impact resistance and colorability. In terms of secondary grade materials, their advantage is a complete range of grades, matching everything from transparent PVC to engineering alloys. When selecting secondary materials, if your system is not purely transparent PVC but an alloy, this line from Mitsubishi Chemical deserves special attention.
Dow: The Legitimate Owner Behind PARALOID
The third one is the American company Dow. Note that Dow's PARALOID™ BTA series has a chemical composition of MBS—this brand was originally Rohm and Haas, which was later merged into Dow, and it still operates under Dow's name. Grades like BTA-717 and BTA-731 are well known to manufacturers producing high impact-resistant transparent sheets and transparent containers.
Dow's market share is often ranked in the top two, and it is very experienced in making general-purpose transparent PVC sheets and thermoforming sheets. Its secondary brand materials usually have slight variations in either impact efficiency or fluidity, which are fully adequate for making ordinary transparent parts and transparent windows in home appliance housings.
Just a side note: don't confuse PARALOID with Germany's Röhm. Röhm makes PMMA acrylic, while PARALOID is from Dow. The names are similar, but the companies are not the same.
What to test first when entering the factory: haze, light transmittance, drop ball impact
How to choose MBS sub-brands? Here are a few practical tips. First, identify the manufacturer. The sub-brands from Zhongyuan, Mitsubishi Chemical, and Dow have a core-shell structure from the original factory; avoid those so-called 'generic MBS' with unclear origins.
Second, closely monitor haze and light transmittance. MBS is a transparent modifier; if the haze increases, the sheet you produce will appear cloudy. First, make a small sample in the factory and check it against a light. Third, you need to measure the ball drop impact. Impact resistance is its essential function; if this parameter drops, adding it would be useless.
Fourth, check batch consistency. The secondary brand fears that each batch is different, so keep samples and test each batch; don’t try to take shortcuts. Fifth, for packaging, only ask about large and small packages. Large packages are low cost and suitable for stable mass production; small packages are flexible and suitable for samples and small quantities.
Let me also mention a common pitfall: some people add MBS to opaque PVC as if it were an ordinary toughening agent, but that's a waste. The value of MBS lies in transparency; for making opaque parts, CPE and other toughening agents are much cheaper.
