1. 盯耐温:Tg220℃、热变形207℃,这是PPSU的本钱,别拿普通工程塑料替代;
2. 盯冲击:拉伸基本保留但缺口冲击掉得多,要抗摔的件控制再生料掺混比例;
3. 盯掺混:工业场合掺20%到25%回料看不出显著损失,医疗母婴透明件禁掺;
4. 盯颜色:黑色量大价低、透明本色稀缺最贵,按外观要求选;
5. 盯黄变:高温加工黄变不可逆,UVC紫外线敏感,透明件别反复回收;
6. 盯阻燃耐蒸汽:本色V-0和耐千次蒸汽是分子给的本钱,医疗件认这两项;
What is the biggest fear of buying recycled PPSU?
It's not that it's not heat-resistant enough. This thing has a glass transition temperature of 220°C and a thermal distortion temperature of around 207°C, naturally passing UL94 V-0. It's naturally a hardcore player.
What matters most is that it falls off from impact. The core selling point of PPSU is the notch impact at 690 joules per meter, close to PC's high impact resistance. After regeneration, it cracks with a single drop, and customers smash it on the ground and then accuse you of cutting corners. You can't even argue on the spot—because the heat-resistant material hasn't shrunk; the recycling process shortens the molecular chains.
Those making high-end maternal and infant products, reusable surgical instruments, ventilator humidifiers—who hasn't been tricked by "looks like good material, but the product is wrong?"
This article thoroughly explains the performance temperament and color principles of recycled PPSU: which properties remain stable after cycling, which are discounted after recycling, and why color directly determines what it can do. Read before placing an order, at least you have a plan.
The base of the original Radel R-5000 is laid out: density 1.29 grams per cubic centimeter, which is considered uniform among specialty engineering plastics; tensile strength 70 to 80 MPa, flexural modulus around 2.4 gigapa; thermal distortion temperature 207°C; elongation at break 60% to 100%; Notch impact is 690 joules per meter, leading among sulfone types; Water absorption is 0.37%, and its size doesn't float much even when soaked.
To put it simply, this thing is naturally heat-resistant, flame-retardant, and impact-resistant—it's a hexagonal warrior.
What about recycled material? Good news and bad news. The good news is, even after the molecular weight drops, tensile strength is basically retained—recycled samples can still be pushed up to around 70 MPa, with limited reduction. The bad news is that the notch impact loses more than the strength, so ductility collapses accordingly.
Remember this asymmetry: it can withstand tensile performance cycles, but not after impact performance cycles. Choosing recycled PPSU is essentially a balance between the two.
Tg220°C is PPSU's golden brand
220°C is PPSU's living capital.
Let's correct a misconception: PPSU is an amorphous material with no melting point, only a glass transition temperature Tg. Unlike crystalline materials, it doesn't suddenly melt at a certain temperature; instead, it gradually softens above 220°C. So it can operate continuously around 180°C year-round, withstand 200°C for short periods, and its measured thermal deformation temperature is 207°C.
Compare and you'll understand: the continuous operating temperature of BPA-type polysulfone PSUs is about 150°C, while PPSU is much higher; To achieve long-term temperature resistance close to PEEK, the price is only one-third to one-fifth of PEEK. That's where its 'cost-effectiveness anchor' comes from.
There are also costs: to process this thing, the barrel temperature must be raised to 340 to 390°C, and mold temperature of 138 to 163°C is still mandatory—if the mold temperature isn't high enough, the part will come with residual stress, delaying cracking sooner or later. Ordinary injection molding machine barrels simply can't handle this temperature, so they need specialized barrels. This is the flip side of the golden brand: the higher the temperature it can withstand, the greater the pain you have to endure during processing.
Impact toughness loses faster than hair
The temperature resistance sign is solid, but molecular chains are shortened after every recycling.
The principle is simple: Each melt processing of PPSU occurs at a high temperature range of 340 to 390°C, and with oxygen in the air, the sulfone and aromatic rings are gradually sheared by thermal oxygen aging. Once the chain is shortened, the molecular weight decreases, and melt fluidity increases. Stretching can still be supported by inter-chain forces, so it is basically kept around 70 MPa; But impact testing tests whether the chain segment can absorb energy through tangling at high speed; if the chain is short, fewer tangling points cause the notch impact to fall down.
There's a pitfall that needs to be clarified in advance: some people online say "strength drops by 15% to 30% after regeneration," but this figure is for fiberglass-reinforced PPS data and cannot be directly applied to PPSU. After recycling, PPSU rarely falls off when stretched; what falls off is impact and ductility. In industrial and general consumer applications, adding 20% to 25% recycled material does not show significant performance loss; But for medical and maternal and infant transparent parts, due to traceability and biocompatibility requirements, regulations usually prohibit recycled material—this is a red line.
Xiamen has a client specializing in high-temperature resistant structural parts for coffee machines. Previously, they wanted to buy domestic recycled PPSU cheaply. Each batch of material had gap impact from 550 to 380 joules per meter. After installation, the resulting structural parts were dropped and cracked twice in three months, with a return rate as low as 7%. Later, they switched to fixed imported materials from Southeast Asia—transparent natural sprue material and black sprue material purchased separately. Imported material color is controllable, transparent material is plentiful, and each vehicle comes with an impact test report. Notch impact is stable above 500 joules per meter, and the return rate is reduced to 0.4%.
To put it bluntly, imported material color is controllable, transparent material is sufficient, and performance is stable. On the mass production line, structural parts don't need to be redone and verified in batches, and there's no need to gamble on the entire batch.
Color is the second face of recycled PPSU
The color of recycled PPSU directly determines what it can do.
Black is undoubtedly the main force. Because PPSU is processed at high temperatures, molecules inevitably age by heat and oxygen, causing the color to deepen. After repeated recycling, this pigment turns yellow like an old photo left in it for years. Black has strong hiding power and a wide source—black shells for electronics and electrical products and industrial parts often yield black shells, so black material is large in quantity, varies in grade, and is priced lower.
unmarked mixed color pelletized material is next, with better purity and purer grade, priced moderately; The most expensive is transparent natural color pulverizer—PIR bottle spout and transparent edges, natural amber transparent, with a scarcity premium. Why is transparent natural color grade the rarest? Because natural color material turns yellow once it ages by hot oxygen, and this yellowing is irreversible, making transparent use impossible, so it can only be downgraded to black.
The color-changing mechanism is simple: repeated high-temperature processing combined with sulfonic thermal oxidation causes carbonyl chromophores to form on the molecular chains, reducing transparency. Another point to note — PPSU is especially sensitive to UVC ultraviolet light. PPSU parts exposed to UVC disinfection lamps will age and discolor faster, which must be avoided in downstream usage scenarios.
Here's a simple logic: if making exterior parts and needing secondary color matching, don't expect recycled natural pigments; for internal structural parts that aren't afraid of black, black materials are more cost-effective. Choosing the right color saves you color matching costs and the hassle of color changes.
Natural V-0 and steam resistance are PPSU's last stubborn strengths
If temperature resistance is PPSU's trademark, then flame retardancy and steam resistance are its bottom line.
PPSU molecular backbone inherently contains sulfone groups and biphenyl aromatic ring structures, making it essentially flame-retardant. Without any flame retardants, it meets UL94 V-0 standards, with wall thicknesses as thin as 0.8 millimeters. Reusable surgical instruments and sterilization trays must pass the hard rules of flame smoke poisoning; its virgin materials naturally qualify.
Repeated steam sterilization resistance is even more of PPSU's defining selling point. Official tests show that after 500 steam cycles, mechanical and thermal properties did not deteriorate significantly—due to annealing effects, strength and modulus slightly increased, while elongation slightly decreased. Downstream manufacturers advertise even more aggressively, claiming that over a thousand cycles of 134°C high-pressure steam sterilization have no significant performance loss. For comparison: BPA type PSU can withstand about 100 steam sterilizations, PC only about 30 to 50 cycles, and PPSU is clearly ahead in this regard.
This dielectric performance is also impressive: high dielectric strength, stable across wide frequency and temperature ranges, and for electronic connectors, sensor housings, and other areas requiring signal transmission and insulation, this is the case.
But there's an unavoidable pitfall: yellowing caused by high-temperature processing is irreversible. If you want to make light-colored, transparent parts, the color of the recycled pigment simply can't be suppressed. So most recycled PPSU in the industry goes black—covering color differences with black, out of sight is out of sight. That's why high-end transparent parts prefer to choose their original color and honestly use recycled materials for black-covered structural parts. Flame retardancy and steam resistance are the costs given by molecules, while yellowing is an unavoidable cost in the recycling process.
Four sub-directions, explained in one sentence
High Temperature Resistance Grade: Focuses on Tg at 220°C and 207°C thermal distortion temperature, used for long-term heat-resistant structural parts and engine compartment peripheral parts.
High Impact Resistance and Toughness Grade: After recovery, molecular weight decreases and impact worsens; by controlling mixing ratio, the notch impact is stabilized within the usable range, making the casing resistant to drops.
Natural Flame Retardant Grade: Does not rely on flame retardants or natural V-0, used for electronic and electrical appliances and aviation interior parts that require flame retardant smoke and toxicity.
Steam Resistance Grade: Resistant to repeated high-pressure steam sterilization, suitable for reusable surgical instruments, sterilization trays, and ventilator humidification tanks.
In Conclusion: Seven Material Selection Tips
1. Monitor temperature resistance: Tg 220°C, heat deformation 207°C—this is the capital for PPSU. Don't substitute with ordinary engineering plastics.
2. Monitor impact: Retain most of the tensile material but lose a lot of impact in the notch. For drop-resistant parts, control the proportion of recycled material.
3. Monitor mixing: In industrial settings, mixing 20% to 25% of recycled material doesn't cause significant loss. For medical maternal and infant transparent parts, avoid mixing.
4. Focus on color: Black is available in large quantities and low price; transparent natural color is rare and most expensive. Choose based on appearance requirements.
5. Monitor yellowing: High-temperature processing makes yellowing irreversible, UVC is sensitive, transparent parts should not be recycled repeatedly;
6. Monitor flame retardancy and steam resistance: Natural V-0 and thousand-times steam resistance are costs given by molecules; medical parts should be aware of these two;
7. Monitor batch: Whether each car's notch impact can remain stable within a certain range is more important than unit price.
Final note: The performance record of recycled PPSU is essentially a record of "temperature resistance, flame retardancy, steam resistance, but molecular weight shock that cannot withstand it." Tg220°C and natural V-0 are inherent assets, and they can still stand after cycling; Molecular weight is the chopstick that easily breaks during recycling; whether you mix it accurately directly determines whether your mass-produced parts crack. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been in the selection of modified PPSU and recycled materials for many years, sourcing through Southeast Asian import channels. The imported materials have controllable colors, ample transparent materials, and stable performance. Dozens of similar selection cases are handled annually, essentially helping you stop the 'assassin' before mass production
