纯树脂级:本色耐温抗冲,做一般工业结构件、绝缘件;
玻纤增强级:刚性和耐热往上拉,做承力件、壳体、骨架;
导电级:掺碳系填料,做需要泄放静电的电子结构件;
耐磨级:填PTFE做低摩擦,做滑动件、阀片、衬套;
1. 要200℃上下的耐温、又要扛摔——再生PPSU纯树脂级先看;
2. 直接进嘴的奶瓶、进手术室的灭菌主件——老老实实原生,再生别碰认证链;
3. 食品接触要走177.1560这条线——先确认合规路径再谈价格;
4. 非认证工业件、配套结构件——干净再生料更划算;
5. 要承力、要刚性——玻纤增强级,别拿纯树脂硬扛;
6. 要防静电——导电级;
7. 要耐磨滑动——PTFE填充耐磨级;

In the specialty plastics industry, PPSU is an underrated and formidable player.
The glass transition temperature is dried to 220°C, the gap is 690 joules per square meter, its toughness rivals PC, and most importantly, it can withstand repeated high-temperature steam sterilization—nowadays, it's basically the domain for high-end mother-and-baby bottles.
But what many people don't know is that many of these downstream industrial structural parts don't use virgin PPSU at all, but recycled materials. Virgin material costs over 150,000 to 160,000 yuan per ton, and clean recycled pellets can be obtained for just over 30,000 yuan. Putting the price difference on the table is enough to make a factory's finance department hold a new meeting.
This article lays out the application map of recycled PPSU: which parts it actually consumes, where it dares to apply it, and where it can't even touch the edges.
First, clarify the positioning. PPSU is scientifically called polyphenylsulfone. It has an amorphous structure and no melting point, holding the ground with a glass transition temperature of 220°C, a thermal distortion temperature of 207°C, density of 1.29, tensile strength of 70 to 80 MPa, and a notch impact of 690 joules per square meter—this is famously tough among sulfone-based products.
Even more impressive is that it is inherently flame-retardant, intrinsically UL94 V-0, with a wall thickness of 0.8 millimeters, so there's no need to add flame retardant at all. Its temperature resistance is much higher than other PSUs in the same brand, and its price is much more affordable than PEEK, perfectly positioning it in the high-end sulfone category where value is valued.
Recycled PPSU takes this cost-performance ratio down again—60% to 80% lower than virgin. It retains key properties like temperature resistance and hydrolysis resistance well, saving on expensive parts. That's the fundamental reason it can be used in industrial parts.
Shakes your head at the mention of recycled materials? High-end sprue material for baby bottles is being reflowed
Many buyers frown at the mention of recycled PPSU: High-end materials for baby bottles and medical devices, and still use recycled materials? Lots of impurities and loose batches—would you dare to use them?
This worry isn't entirely unreasonable, but the two issues need to be separated. PPSU is indeed the mainstream material for high-end bottles today. It contains no bisphenol A, can withstand boiling and steam sterilization, and young parents are willing to pay for it. The country has set a group standard for PPSU bottles: the bottle body is clearly written in black and white prohibiting the use of recycled material—this is the bottom line, and anyone who touches it will get into trouble.
But note, what is banned is the "bottle body," which goes directly into the mouth. Clean sprue material, cold runner material, and transparent edges molded by the bottle factory that have never touched the product surface can be collected separately, re-pelletized, and sent to industrial structural parts that do not touch food or enter the certification chain.
To put it bluntly, recycled PPSU is not secretly stuffed into bottles, but rather the material that would otherwise be burned during production and returned to where it needs to be used. This is called making the most of things, not passing off inferior products as good.
Maternal, Infant, and Medical are PPSU's golden brand
Speaking of PPSU's signature products, maternal and medical care are ranked very high.
For mothers and infants, high-end bottles, breast pump components, and learning cups must be BPA-free, boil-resistant, and repeatedly sterilized by steam—PPSU is almost the standard answer. Medical equipment is tougher: reusable surgical instrument handles, sterilization trays, ventilator humidifiers, insulin pen components, dental instruments must withstand hundreds or thousands of 134°C high-pressure steam sterilization cycles and must pass the biocompatibility test. Official tests have tested 500 steam cycles, with no obvious deterioration in mechanical or thermal performance, so the industry only dares to claim it can withstand over a thousand cycles.
But here's a big truth: medical components that enter the certification chain and interact with the human body use virgin materials. Once recycled materials are introduced, that traceable chain breaks, and neither the regulations nor the customers recognize it. The only parts that can be imported are the supporting structural parts that do not contact the human body or sterilize the main components.
In Chengdu, a client who makes structural components for ventilators and medical oxygen production equipment used native PPSU for airflow manifolds and cooling brackets inside the body, costing 150,000 to 160,000 yuan per ton. Once the batch starts, the financial department keeps saying it is expensive. Later, they replaced these internal components that don't directly contact patients or enter the sterilization certification chain with clean recycled PPSU granules. The main properties of high temperature resistance and hydrolysis resistance were almost completely lost, and material costs dropped to just over 50,000 yuan, cutting the cost per piece by over 60%. This alone saved nearly a million yuan a year.
This is the value of choosing the right material—not all PPSU parts have to use virgin. First, think carefully about whether your parts need to be safe to do so, and the accounts will be settled.
Food contact and water treatment both have a broad and effective approach .
Besides maternal and infant healthcare, food contact and water treatment are another comfortable ground for PPSU.
Food contact requires first clarifying the legal provisions. Many people confuse PPSU's food contact clause with the nylon clause, but that's not the case. PPSU is regulated under US FDA 21 CFR 177.1560, which is a specific clause for polyarylsone resin. Following this compliance path, high-temperature resistant parts for coffee machine components, microwave tableware, and food processing equipment are legitimate. They are resistant to heat hydrolysis and oil stains, working daily in high-temperature steam, and can withstand it. These parts work nonstop in high-temperature steam for years; if the material can't hold up, the entire equipment must stop and rework, so naturally, material selection is a must.
Water Treatment is the same here. The membrane shell and fluid transport components of water purifiers need to be soaked in hot water for long periods and carry residual chlorine. Ordinary sulfone products become brittle after prolonged soaking, and PPSU's hydrolysis resistance is a perfect fit.
TasteClosely: These parts have one thing in common—they don't directly touch a baby's mouth, but they have to be repeatedly exposed to hot water and steam for long periods. PPSU's foundation of high temperature resistance and hydrolysis resistance is here. Once recycled materials lower costs, both ends naturally connect.
Invisible players in aviation and electronics
Recycled PPSU has a third territory, hidden within aviation and electronics. Usually inconspicuous, but very selective about materials.
Aviation: aircraft interior parts and catering vehicle components must be inherently flame-retardant, lightweight, and able to withstand repeated disinfection and wiping by flight attendants. PPSU body is flame-retardant V-0, meets the standard at 0.8mm, no extra flame retardant needed, and its lightweight quality is also advantageous. Of course, the main components in the airworthiness certification chain are still determined by virgin materials; recycled materials mainly serve interior fittings and tooling equipment, which are non-certified parts.
Electronics and Semiconductors are lively. High-temperature resistant connectors, sensor housings, semiconductor test sockets, chip aging sockets must stand long-term in high temperatures and circuit environments, requiring high temperature resistance and dielectric stability. These components do not conflict with human safety, but they do with yield and cost, which is the main battlefield where recycled PPSU can be absorbed.
To put it simply, one is heat-resistant, the other has high impact resistance, and with the price dropping significantly after recycling, these pieces together form the application landscape of recycled PPSU.
Several grades, each going their own way
Recycled PPSU is divided by modification direction, mainly based on which one depends on what your part will do:
Pure resin grade: natural heat resistance and impact resistance, used for general industrial structural parts and insulation parts;
Glass fiber reinforced grade: rigidity and heat resistance are pulled upward, used for load-bearing parts, housings, and frameworks;
Conductive grade: carbon-doped fillers, used for electronic structural parts that require static discharge;
Wear-resistant grade: Filled with PTFE for low friction, for sliding parts, valve plates, and bushings;
High Flow Transparency Grade: Good flowability, natural translucency, made for thin-walled parts with proper appearance and light transmission requirements.
If you choose the right route, the color matching and modifications later become negotiable; If you choose the wrong route, even the cheapest material will pile up in warehouse inventory.
In conclusion: Eight mnemonic tips to get recycled PPSU selection right
After all this, here's a practical selection tip:
1. If you want temperature resistance around 200°C and withstand drops—look at pure resin grade recycled PPSU first;
2. Bottles that go straight into the mouth, sterilization main components that go into the operating room—honestly original, don't touch the certification chain for regeneration;
3. For food contact, you have to follow the 177.1560 route — confirm the compliance path first before discussing price;
4. For non-certified industrial parts and supporting structural parts — clean recycled material is more cost-effective;
5. If strength and rigidity are required — use glass fiber reinforced grade, don’t try to rely on pure resin;
6. If anti-static is needed — use conductive grade;
7. If wear-resistant sliding is needed — use PTFE-filled wear-resistant grade;
8. For large-scale mass production — first check if the material source is clean and if the batches are stable.
That’s all eight points. Remember them, and the selection of recycled PPSU will basically stay on track.
A final note. PPSU as a material is truly low-profile, yet genuinely capable. A glass transition temperature of 220°C, impact resistance of 690 J/m², intrinsic V-0 flame retardancy, can withstand repeated steam sterilization — it has all these abilities. After recycling, when the price threshold drops, industrial parts become more feasible.
Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd., which has been deeply involved in the materials industry for many years, has handled many cases along the recycled PPSU line. The Southeast Asian import channels are mature, high-temperature transparent material sources are stable, and inventory is sufficient. Similar high-temperature structural component cost-reduction demands are handled in large quantities every year. Simply put, we help you figure out before mass production which parts can use recycled material and which must use virgin material.
