UCAR副牌,为什么做涂料的一桶成膜助剂能算清一笔大账?

One ton of film-forming additives saves 300 yuan, but a tank of paint costs 5,000 yuan because the film formation is poor. Even elementary school students can calculate this amount, but colorists always forget when ordering. Anyone in the paint industry knows that the amount of film-forming additives, whether right or wrong, directly determines whether the paint film cracks or sticks in winter.

UCAR two terms are not unfamiliar in the paint industry, but most people don't figure out who is behind them or how to use the sub-brand. Today, let's do the math and clarify this account.

1. Who is UCAR, and what is the structure of coating raw materials

UCAR It's not a new brand. It comes from the established Union Carbide, which merged into Dow in 2001 and is now a long-established brand in Dow's coating raw materials. Within UCAR's product line, the closest product to coating formulation is coalescent, such as UCAR Filmer IBT, which specializes in latex paint film formation at low temperatures; plus its acrylic emulsion series.

The top foreign player in global coating film formation additives is actually Eastman from the US, whose Texanol is the industry benchmark, holding over 20% of the global market share; Second is Dow itself, with UCAR and DOWANOL series performing well in the high-end market; The third tier includes Germany's BASF and America's Huntsman. This market is small but very concentrated.

What exactly are film-forming additives for? The emulsion particles in latex paint are originally hard balls; when the temperature drops, they can't form a film, and when the film freezes, it cracks and falls off. Film-forming additives soften these hard balls at room temperature, allowing them to fuse into a continuous film. So adding more or less, whether right or wrong, directly determines whether the film is successful and durable.

2. What is UCAR's secondary brand? Don't mix it with recycled solvents .

Genuine UCAR is a barrel that suppresses formula costs, while generic alcohol esters revert and crack as soon as you pour them in. UCAR's secondary brand is stuck between film formation temperature and residual odor—purity and volatility are slightly off, but the film-forming additive still does its job. The sources are still the same four types: start-and-stop starting and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, process fluctuation batches, and secondary line residues.

Key to understand: UCAR secondary brands are still original factory raw materials, with no change in molecular structure, only purity or some indicators are half a level off. They are completely different from recycled solvents and blending materials—recycled solvents are distilled used materials and sold with many impurities; UCAR secondary brands are original factory primary materials. These types of liquid additives are often shown in small packages. Don't treat recycled alcohols and esters as UCAR sub-brands.

The "sub-brands" of liquid additives are not quite the same as plastic pellets. Plastic sub-brands are at least visible particles; liquid additives mixed together, and just by looking at the bottle body, you can't tell the original sub-brand from recycled alcohols or esters. So this area relies more on testing: measuring purity, volatile content, and smelling odors. If the odor is strong but purity is low, 80% of it is recycled material. When poured in, the paint film cracks and the smell takes a long time to dissipate. Saving on additives is not enough to lose a batch of paint.

3. Dow UCAR: The long-standing foundation of combined carbides

The protagonist Dow UCAR. The foundation of the combined carbide coating set is all under Dow. UCAR Filmer IBT is a high-efficiency film-forming additive that helps emulsion particles blend into continuous films in architectural latex paints, inks, and industrial coatings. Dow also sells ROVACE vinyl acetate-acrylic emulsions as a combination.

UCAR characteristics of sub-brands: because they are liquid additives, sub-brands mainly produce batches with slight deviations in purity or odor. Common products have slightly lower purity and slightly stronger odors, which are more than sufficient for ordinary industrial coatings, primers, and non-odor-sensitive architectural paints, but cannot produce high-end zero-odor interior wall paints or food-contact grade coatings.

4. Eastman Texanol: Standard parts for film-forming additives

The second is Eastman from the USA. Their Texanol is the "standard component" among film-forming additives; in the industry, when it comes to alcohols and esters for film-forming aids, nine times out of ten, they mean Texanol. Eastman also has the zero-VOC Optifilm series for high-end use.

Eastman's distribution material is characterized by wide formulation compatibility, suitable for almost all emulsion types. If you want to save money on film-forming additives, Texanol's stable supply is the default choice for many formulators.

5. BASF: Full formulation supply route

Third company, BASF Germany. BASF has a full formulation route for coating additives and emulsions; film-forming additives are just one piece in its vast coating raw material portfolio. Its feature is that it fits perfectly with its own emulsions and pigment fillers, forming a system-wide system.

BASF's circulating materials are characterized by stable batch sizes and up-to-date service, but using their film-forming additives alone as a sub-brand is not as easy to find as Dow UCAR and Eastman Texanol, making it more suitable for full formulation procurement.

6. Buying UCAR sub-brands, these three pitfalls

First, don't ignore odor. The most common issues for sub-brands to drift are odor and volatile content. When making interior wall paint, wood paint, or food contact parts, even a strong odor can cause a failure.

Second, test purity against the system. Whether film-forming additives are compatible with emulsions depends on whether the minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT) can be lowered, not just by price.

Third, distinguish between original sub-brands and recycled solvents. If there are many recycled alcohols and esters containing impurities, the paint film will crack when poured in. Just smell and measure the purity to know. Recommendation: Test MFFT, volatile content, and odor on the coating system; avoid secondary brands in odor-sensitive scenarios.

Cologne warehouse in-stock | UCAR direct delivery

Main recommended brands: Dow, Eastman, BASF.

Main grades: UCAR Filmer IBT/DOWANOL, Texanol/Optifilm, BASF film-forming additives.

Packaging specifications: Small secondary brands and boxed secondary brands use small packaging; large package/ton packaging materials go to ton bags; stock is packaged according to workshop usage.

Warehouse Stock: UCAR warehouse stock is usually around 4000 tons, with 600-900 tons for small parcels and secondary plates, 250-450 tons for containerized sub-plates, and 2650-3150 tons for large packages/tons.

Supply Assurance: Inspection orders come with the goods, COA goes hand in hand with the goods.

7. Model Selection Tips

1. For UCAR secondary plates, first check their purpose; avoid high-end paints sensitive to odor.

2. Whether MFFT can reduce the amount is tested, test it on your lotion system.

3. Distinguish between the original sub-brand and the recycled solvent; if there are too many impurities, it will burn out as soon as you pour it.

4. Industrial coatings and primers are sufficient; zero-odor interior wall paint should be genuine.

5. Mainly small packages, ordered according to the amount of mixing jar used.

8. Final Thoughts

There is a customer in Zhangzhou who produces industrial powder coatings and industrial paints. Previously, they always used the brand-name coalescing agents, and the price per ton couldn't be lowered. They tried several batches of cheaper glycol esters, but the film formation at low temperatures in winter was poor, and complaints about cracking and tackiness occurred every quarter. The return rate hovered around 7%. Later, they recalibrated the formula according to the purity grade of UCAR coalescing agent's secondary brand, lowering the MFFT to the appropriate range. The low-temperature film formation pass rate increased from 86% to 99%, and the return rate dropped to 0.5%, saving nearly 20% of the unit cost for the additive alone.

This shows a precise account of the film formation step. Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. deals in imported chemical raw materials year-round and handles dozens of similar coating selection cases each year. Simply put, they help you lock MFFT and volatile content before mass production.
