The boss scolds the buyer, the buyer scolds the supplier, and the supplier replies, 'You didn't choose the right grade.' After a full circle, the blame ends up back on the PPs.

To put it bluntly, it's not that PP is unusable; it's that many people only focus on the official price list and haven't really understood that PP also has a demonized middle option — the secondary brand. This article will fully explain the PP category, three reliable foreign manufacturers worldwide, and whether their secondary brands can actually be used.

PP is so light that it can float on water.

PP, scientifically named polypropylene, is a crystalline general-purpose plastic polymerized from propylene monomers. Its density is around 0.90, lighter than water, making it a 'skinny' among commonly used plastics. It can withstand boiling water, resist acids and alkalis, has a wide forming temperature range, and the equipment is not demanding, making it almost a staple material in injection molding factories.

The main brand PP is so expensive that the cost can't be reduced, the sub-brand is used on the machine without testing, and in winter, a whole cabinet of turnover baskets all crack.

First, let's clarify the concept; this is the premise of using side decks.

Secondary grade refers to products from the same manufacturer and the same brand whose factory inspection did not fully meet the technical specifications of the primary grade. From the same batch of polymer products, those that fully meet the standards are labeled as the primary grade, while those with slight deficiencies in individual specifications are considered secondary grade. They are still original particles from the original factory, with molecular structures consistent with the primary grade, and are not recycled materials reprocessed into new pellets.

ExxonMobil's secondary brand is valuable because of integrated raw materials—it supplies propylene from its own upstream refining and chemical processes, ensuring high purity of the base material and stable control of ash content. The secondary brand is often concentrated in high melt index thin-wall materials and transparent materials, with occasional slight deviations in light transmission or gloss indicators. These materials are suitable for making tableware, storage items, and thin-wall packaging where transparency is not highly critical, but whiteness and surface quality are important, making it a good option for cost reduction. Applicable scenarios: thin-wall injection molding, transparent daily necessities, packaging containers.

Nordic Chemicals: Borflow series, piping and weather resistance are its specialties

Borealis, the Nordic chemical company, is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, relying on raw materials from Northern Europe and the Middle East. Its PP technology is famous for the Borstar bimodal process, and its pipe materials Borflow and medical materials Bormed are hard currency in the industry.

Its secondary brand is characterized by 'good material but small quantity.' Because it mainly targets the mid-to-high-end market, the batches of the secondary brand released are not large, but the base material has good toughness and weather resistance, often only showing slight variations in low-temperature impact or melt index. It can be used for outdoor turnover baskets, automotive interior substrates, and parts requiring certain weather resistance, performing better than ordinary secondary brands. Suitable applications: outdoor structural parts, automotive substrates, pipe fittings.

Choosing a secondary brand, avoid these pitfalls

Knowing who supplies the goods is one thing, but you also need to know how to pick them. Sub-brands like this, also called 'major factory PP sub-brands,' have quite a few pitfalls.

First, check batch stability. Secondary brands naturally have fluctuating properties, so before placing an order, you should first do a small-scale trial. Test melt index, ash content, and notch impact yourself—don’t just rely on the supplier’s test reports. Second, check the direction of deviation. Whether the melt index is too high or too low, or there’s yellowing or poor light transmission, it should match the weaknesses of your product—if you make appearance parts, avoid colors that differ; if you make structural parts, avoid melt indices that vary wildly. Third, check packaging traceability. When secondary brands leak from regular large factories, they come in large and small packages. The original factory markings and batch numbers on the bags should match—don’t buy labeled products that are pretending to be something they’re not.
