SURLYN副牌,为什么香水瓶盖做着做着就“花脸”?

Every year when the new season arrives, cosmetics bottle cap factories start to have headaches: a batch of high-gloss transparent perfume bottle caps, injection-molded and fine, but after two weeks in the warehouse, the surface starts to fog up and scratch, and customers return the entire batch with a magnifying glass. This kind of "painted face" incident is almost always related to the problem of the polymer material.

1. What is SURLYN, and who is making this kind of isopolymer

SURLYN (sarin resin) is a polymer with the scientific name ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer. It uses sodium or zinc ions to neutralize some carboxyl groups on the molecular chain, forming reversible ionic crosslinks. Simply put, it can be processed like plastic when heated, and after cooling, the ionic bonds tighten the chain, resulting in a transparent glass that is scratch-resistant, chemically resistant, and has a high gloss. It was formerly DuPont (now Dow) and made high-end perfume bottle caps, cream jars, and golf ball shells.

The top foreign player in global dispolymer production is Dow SURLYN; Next is SK Functional Polymer (France, under SK Korea) with IONIA ionpolymers, which makes both sodium and zinc types; The third is Japan's Toray Ionpure series. This category isn't large, but SURLYN basically dominates the high-end bottle cap market.

Why can't cosmetics factories have to do with it? Perfume bottle caps require crystal-like transparency, high luster, perfume corrosion resistance, and scratch resistance. PMMA is also transparent but smudges when scratched; PC is also transparent, but its chemical resistance is lacking—the perfume solvent turns black when sprayed. SURLYN's ion cross-linking gives hardness and chemical resistance, which is exactly where cosmetic packaging needs it—that's its moat.

2. What is SURLYN's secondary brand? Don't mix it with ordinary transparent materials

SURLYN The secondary brand is the genuine 'mirror substitute'—the same set of sodium-zinc ion cross-linking process, but the 'makeup' for translucency or gloss isn't fully applied at the factory, so it can't get crystal highlights, but the inner cover and base still look crisp. The four main sources remain the same: starting and parking front and tail materials, brand switching transition materials, process fluctuation batches, and secondary line residues.

The key is to be clear: the ion cross-linking structure of SURLYN's secondary brand molecular chains hasn't been changed; it's still the original factory native particles, only the light transmission or high-gloss test was offset by half a stop. Recycled material is granulate at the edges of the bottle cap, so transparency has already deteriorated; recycled materials are even more common. SURLYN materials are common in small packaging. Don't mistake ordinary transparent PS/PMMA secondary brands for SURLYN; that crystalline texture won't be imitated.

Cosmetic bottle caps emphasize "face"; the difference between genuine and secondary brands often lies in the high-gloss outer cap layer. A smart approach is to open and use: the high-gloss outer cap directly facing the customer's eyes, using the genuine brand to maintain quality; the hidden inner cap, base, and liner inside are saved costs by using the secondary brand. It not only preserves the customer's stunning unboxing experience but also lowers material costs—this is the true use of secondary brands.

3. Dow SURLYN: The pinnacle of cosmetic lids

Protagonist: Dow SURLYN. They have made polymers the pinnacle of cosmetic packaging. The PC-2000, a sodium-based injection plastic specializing in perfume bottle caps and cream jars, is highly transparent and chemically resistant, and has zinc-based film-grade materials for food packaging and golf ball shells. SURLYN also offers bio-based REN and recycled CIR series.

SURLYN characteristics of the secondary brand: Because it is a near-brand monopoly, the secondary brand mainly comes from materials that are translucent or have slight gloss deviations. Commonly, slightly higher haze or slightly lower gloss is enough for inner caps, bases, and non-high-gloss parts, but not for flagship perfume bottle caps that require crystal highlight.

4. SK Functional Polymer IONIA: A rare stable supply source

The second SK Functional Polymer. It is SK Geo Centric's ionpolymer factory in France. The IONIA series includes sodium and zinc types, used for packaging, sealing, and industrial parts. It has rapidly expanded in the European market in recent years and is a rare stable supplier outside SURLYN.

IONIA sub-brand is good cost performance, suitable for chemical-resistant caps and non-high-gloss exterior parts. However, its reputation in high-end crystal transparency still lags behind SURLYN's, so to replace high-gloss bottle caps, prototyping is needed first.

5. Toray Ionpure: The optical camp with stable batch selection

The third is Toray's Ionpure from Japan. Toray focuses on the Asian market for polymers, with experience in optics and packaging films. Its material features are batch stability and uniform optical performance.

Toray secondary brands have limited quantity, suitable for making transparent small parts and caps that require uniform optical quality. If you want to find their secondary brands, the stock volume is not as easy as the first two.

6. Buying SURLYN secondary brands, these three pitfalls

First, don't use secondary brands to top highlight-highlight flagship caps. Secondary brands generally have a slightly higher haze, so making perfume bottle caps that require crystal transparency will reveal the quality as soon as you get them on the machine.

Second, don't buy the wrong sodium-zinc type. Sodium-type has high gloss and is suitable for injection-molded caps; zinc-type wear-resistant is suitable for films and coatings. Mixing them causes problems.

Third, distinguish between SURLYN and ordinary transparent materials. PMMA is transparent but not scratch-resistant; PC is transparent but has poor chemical resistance. Don't use them to pass off as SURLYN. Suggestion: Measure haze and gloss against the intended use; distinguish between sodium and zinc types. For high-gloss parts, it's safer to use genuine brands.

Cologne Warehouse In Stock | SURLYN Logistics

Main Recommended Brands: Dow, SK Functional Polymer, Toray.

Main Grades: SURLYN (PC-2000/REN/CIR), IONIA, Ionpure.

Packaging specifications: Small sub-brand and boxed sub-brand use small packaging; large package/ton packaging is sold in ton bags, sorted by workshop usage for stocking.

Warehouse Stock: SURLYN warehouse stock is usually around 5000 tons, with 800-1000 tons for small sub-labels, 300-500 tons for sub-label containers, and 3500-3900 tons for large packages/ton packaging.

Supply Guarantee: Test before signing; large samples are passed before moving on to bulk goods.

7. Selection Tips

1. SURLYN sub-brand is typed first, with sodium-type caps and zinc-type films mixed separately.

2. Tested for haze and gloss, don't force a highlight flagship cap.

3. Can't replicate the crystal texture, don't fake regular PMMA/PC.

4. Inner lid base is sufficient, highlight outer cap should be genuine.

5. Mainly small packages, glue according to the cap injection molding line.

8. Final thoughts

In Shaoguan, there is a client who produces cosmetic bottle caps. They previously used genuine SURLYN for perfume bottle caps, but the cost per ton was too high. They tried a batch of cheaper transparent material, but after being stored for two weeks, it became foggy and scratched, and the return rate for the entire batch rose to 11%. Later, they adjusted according to the haze grade of SURLYN’s second brand, using different materials for the high-gloss parts and inner caps—the high-gloss outer caps still used the genuine brand, while the inner caps and bases switched to the second brand. The haze remained within an acceptable range, and after three months in storage, there was no discoloration. The return rate dropped from 11% to 0.6%, and the total cost of the caps was reduced by more than 10%.

This is the accounting method of using the second brand in non-high-gloss areas. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been producing imported second brands for many years and handles quite a few cosmetic cap selection cases annually. To put it simply, it helps you measure haze and gloss before mass production.
