Many people think that car bumpers are made by pressing rubber. After all, they are so soft and so elastic that they can absorb impact when hit.

The truth is—it has never been vulcanized. It is a physical blend of PP (polypropylene) and EPDM (ethylene-propylene rubber), scientifically called TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin. The rubber phase is not cross-linked, and it can be remolded when heated. This is completely different from real rubber, which cannot melt again after vulcanization.

This counter-intuitive fact causes a new batch of procurement mistakes every year. Some people buy TPV thinking it’s TPO and end up paying a lot more; some use recycled TPO to make bumpers, which crack at the slightest impact in winter. TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer. Simply put, it is PP mixed with EPDM rubber, giving hard PP the elasticity of rubber. It is tougher than pure PP, lighter than pure rubber, and faster to process. It melts when heated, shapes when cooled, and can be injection molded in one go.

Its work is very focused: car bumpers, side body panels, interior coverings, dashboard skins; and also roof waterproofing membranes, soft-touch handles. The automotive industry is its main battlefield, especially bumpers.

It is important to distinguish a key concept here: TPO and TPV are not the same. TPO is a physical blend, with the rubber phase uncured, offering good process flow and low cost; TPV undergoes dynamic vulcanization, where EPDM rubber is cross-linked during blending, providing better heat resistance and resistance to compression set, but at a higher price. First, let's explain the definition thoroughly. Secondary grade products are the portion from the same manufacturer and the same grade that do not fully meet the standard product specifications during factory inspection. There are four sources: leftover material from starting and stopping production, transitional material from grade switching, batches where individual indicators slightly exceed limits due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary production lines.

TPO sub-brand, the variations are mostly in melt index, hardness, and low-temperature impact. Here is a result to remember:

Its secondary grade characteristics are: slight fluctuations in melt index or hardness, but the low-temperature impact resistance and toughness foundation remain unchanged. When making general bumpers and exterior trim parts, if you choose the right secondary grade, it can withstand impacts in winter.

ExxonMobil in the United States has elastomer brands such as Santoprene and Exact. According to Dataintelo, it has an approximately 13% market share in TPO, with a product line covering automotive and industrial soft-touch components. One thing to note: Santoprene leans more towards TPV, so make sure to check whether it is TPO or TPV when buying.

Its secondary grade, in common situations, has hardness or flow indicators fluctuating at the factory margins. For interior parts and bumper skins that have high requirements for a soft touch, select the premium secondary grade carefully; both the feel and toughness are up to standard.

Austria's Nordic chemical company Borealis has a TPO grade called Daplen. According to Dataintelo and PW Consulting, it has a market share of about 11%, mainly targeting automotive interior and exterior trims, and is widely used in low-volatility, low-density applications.

Its sub-brands often have slight deviations in finger fusion or odor indicators compared to the main brand. When producing large quantities of bumpers or interior parts, selecting the right sub-grade is sufficient for lightweighting and processability.

TPO sub-brand inspection, focus on three things.

First, distinguish between TPO and TPV; their prices and uses differ significantly. Don’t pay TPV prices for TPO, and don’t try to use TPO for high-temperature parts. Next, check low-temperature impact resistance and melt flow index. Bumpers need to withstand impacts in winter, and a decrease in impact resistance is a potential risk. Then, look at whether it’s original packaging from the factory. Large or small packaging is fine, but the batch number and manufacturer must match to prevent someone from passing off recycled bumper material as new.

Common pitfalls are: using recycled TPO to make bumpers, which can crack into several pieces in winter collisions; or using a secondary brand with a high melt index to make thick-walled bumpers, causing shrink marks and warping. Bumpers are safety components, and nothing should be skimped on their low-temperature impact performance.

Later, they switched to selected secondary-brand TPO from major imported manufacturers. The melt index and hardness measured were very close to the original brand, and low-temperature impact tests passed. Bumpers no longer cracked in winter, reducing the return rate to below 1%, and the cost per ton of material also decreased somewhat.
