SIS副牌,做压敏胶的厂为什么越来越离不开这三家?

Many buyers of pressure-sensitive adhesives think they're buying "glue pellets," but actually they're buying "luck."

Also called SIS, the price ranges from 12,000 to 35,000 per ton. Cheap ones are good for initial tack and peel off after three days; Expensive ones last a year but can't be kept at cost. What's the difference in between? It's not the glue pellets themselves, but the styrene content and bi-block ratio in the SIS grade.

Jinhua has a factory that makes double-sided tape and label glue. Two years ago, they bought a batch of domestic SIS tape cheaply, and the adhesive tape stuck to thermos cups. In summer, it curls over the edges when sun-drying, with a customer return rate of 12%. Last year, they switched to imported genuine brands, costing over 30,000 yuan per ton, with gross profit cut in half. Later, after asking around in the circle, I found out that the SIS secondary brand hides a cost path that others don't know about.

To put it bluntly, the buyer thinks they're comparing price, but they're actually comparing luck. Anyone who's truly done mass production knows that with the right grade, the secondary brand is easier to handle than the genuine brand; If the grade is wrong, the genuine brand is still waste rubber. What is

SIS? Thermoplastic elastomer

SIS, born from pressure-sensitive rubber , is styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer, and is the "adhesive camp" in the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) family. Its molecular chain is like a sandwich—hard styrene segments at both ends, and soft isoprene segments in the middle. At room temperature, the styrene segments are physically crosslinked, giving the material strength; When heated, the styrene segments melt and the material can flow.

This thing is naturally made for pressure-sensitive adhesives—initially good bonding, stable adhesion, can be applied with a press at room temperature, and can also be processed using hot-melt technology. Double-sided tape, label adhesive, sanitary napkin adhesive, automotive wiring harness glue—more than half are made from SIS.

Leading foreign companies in the global SIS industry, ranked by market share:

Kraton (USA): global market share about 24%-35%, Kraton D series (non-hydrogenated SIS), industry leader;

TSRC (Taiwan): VECTOR/TAIPOL brand, about 30% market share in Asia-Pacific;

Zeon Japan: Quintac series, a familiar face in the Japanese pressure-sensitive adhesive market.

Li Changrong (LCY, Taiwan, China) ranks fourth and has penetration in automotive interiors and pressure-sensitive adhesives. Baling Petrochemical has been chasing in China in recent years, but the power in high-end pressure-sensitive adhesive-grade SIS still lies with Keton and TSMU.

SIS sub-brand: The original factory's original three-block particles, not recycled plastic pellets

SIS sub-brand, consistent with other thermoplastic elastomers, but the pressure-sensitive adhesive scenario has its own temperament.

SIS sub-brand's true nature: During plant startup/shutdown, grade switching, or process fluctuations, the factory slightly deviates from the genuine brand's specific indicators (such as styrene content, two-block content, melt flow rate). The molecular structure matches the genuine brand, all styrene-isoprene-styrene three-block components, except one item was missed during factory inspection.

Four major sources: start-stop head and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, process fluctuation batches, auxiliary line tailings.

Boundaries are clear: genuine SIS meets all indicators, batches are stable, used for high-end double-sided tape, medical pressure-sensitive adhesives, and automotive interior adhesives; Sub-brand SIS has slight fluctuations in some indicators, used for regular label glue, stationery glue, and packaging tape; Recycled SIS has already gone through a thermal history, with molecular chains degrading and initial adhesive both failing; Recycled SIS performance fluctuates greatly and can only be made into low-end hot melt glue sticks.

In short: SIS sub-brand consists of original factory three-block particles, not recycled glue for pelletizing.

Keteng Kraton—the pioneer of the SIS category

Keton was spun off from Shell's chemical elastomers division back then, and the Kraton D series is the flagship of the SIS category. Grades like D1161 and D1163 are familiar to those making high-end double-sided tape and medical pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Keteng's advantage is vertical integration—from styrene monomers to block polymerization, the entire chain is handled in-house, molecular structure is stable, bi-block content is low, and its adhesion performance is hard currency in the industry.

Subbrand Features: Keteng's sub-brand mostly comes from the D series transition materials, with styrene content usually fluctuating within ±2%. Both initial and long-stick adhesives do not fall off simultaneously, only one type is slightly loose. Suitable for making regular label glue, stationery glue, and packaging tape, not suitable for high-end medical adhesive or high-end automotive interior glue. Packaging is mainly small (20KG paper bags), but large packages are also available.

TSRC TSRC—A familiar face in pressure-sensitive adhesives in the Asia-Pacific region

TSRC has production capacity in Kaohsiung and Hsinchu, and the VECTOR series has a very high penetration rate in the Asia-Pacific pressure-sensitive adhesive market. Brands like VECTOR 4111 and 4211 are used by factories making adhesive labels and double-sided tape. Taiwan Rubber is characterized by short lead times and good cost performance, with a strong reputation among domestic rubber manufacturers for formula compatibility.

Subbrand Features: Common sub-brands of Taiwan Rubber have slightly floating melt fingers (within ±2) or slightly lower styrene content, but complete three-block structure and balanced initial bonding and stickiness. The double-sided tape factory in Jinhua later switched to the VECTOR subbrand, which lasts from three days without peeling to three months, with edge curling rate reduced from 8% to within 0.5%.

Japan Zeon—Quintac, Japanese precision school

Japan Zeon's Quintac series is widely used in Japanese pressure-sensitive adhesives and automotive interior adhesives. Grades like Quintac 3421 and 3433 are characterized by narrow molecular weight distribution and low control of two-block content, resulting in adhesives with high transparency and low odor.

Subbrand features: The sub-brand of Zeon has small deviation in specifications, but its price is slightly higher than Keteng and Taixiang, and its domestic delivery times are less stable than the top two. It is suitable for producing high-end label and stationery glue products that require scent and transparency, making it a domestically export-grade product.

SIS sub-brand—if a rubber factory steps on one, the whole batch will be returned

SIS. Sub-brands are used for pressure-sensitive glue, causing many pitfalls.

First pitfall: Using SBS sub-brands to pass off as SIS sub-brands. SBS is styrene-butadiene-styrene, differing from SIS by one monomer—butadiene swapped for isoprene. SBS glue has poor initial adhesion and low adhesion, but becomes brittle in winter. Many beginners can't tell the difference, only realizing the glue is wrong when they use the machine. How to distinguish: SIS particles are yellowish and soft when squeezed; SBS granules are whiter and tougher when pinched.

Second pitfall: Selling recycled SIS as a secondary brand. After two thermal cycles, the molecular chains of recycled SIS degrade, causing both initial adhesive and stickiness to drop off, and the finished adhesive will fall off within three months. Identification method: The original secondary brand has uniform particles and consistent color; The recycled material is dark, has black spots, and uneven particle size.

Third pitfall: Applied randomly regardless of purpose. If the secondary brand has slightly higher block content, avoid making high-end glue that requires adhesive retention for over a year; For regular label adhesive and stationery glue, the secondary brand is just right

Acceptance action: Conduct three tests upon arrival—styrene content, biblock content, melt flow rate, and sample sealing bag. Pressure-sensitive adhesive is most sensitive to these three items; none can be skipped.

six key mnemonics to successfully select SIS sub-brand models

1. High-end medical adhesive, automotive interior premium glue—genuine brand;

2. Ordinary label glue, stationery glue, packaging tape—sub-brand is sufficient;

3. Global delivery time is stable and sticky—recognize Kraton D;

4. Asia-Pacific has short lead times and cost-effectiveness—recognize Taiwan Rubber VECTOR;

5. Low odor and high transparency—recognize Quintac;

6. Sub-brand must measure styrene content, biblock content, and melt finger upon arrival.

SIS sub-brand is the genuine 'specialty of the rubber factory'—on the same lithium-based anion polymerization line, there is a test sheet unstamped between initial and long-stick adhesive, but the molecular chain is exactly the same as the genuine brand.

Jinhua's client who makes double-sided tape and label glue used domestic SIS two years ago. The adhesive glue they made was stuck to thermos cups, and in summer, the edges curled as soon as they were sun-dryed. The customer returned 12%; Last year, the genuine Shangketeng brand cost over 30,000 yuan per ton, with gross profit cut in half. Later, I switched to a secondary brand of Taixiang VECTOR, with almost no change in formula. The adhesive lasted from three days without peeling off to three months, and the edge curling rate was reduced from 8% to under 0.5%. Material cost saved 12,000 yuan per ton, and over the year, just returning products saved me over 500,000 yuan.

This is the value of choosing a secondary brand—not to use the secondary brand to compete in high-end medical glue, but to get 80% of SIS performance and cut costs by 30% in ordinary label glue and stationery glue. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been making imported SIS sub-brands for many years. The sub-brand materials from Keteng, Taixiang, and Ruiong have been in stock year-round, handling dozens of pressure-sensitive adhesive cases annually. In short, they help you figure out issues like "whether the edges roll or the adhesive will come off" before mass production.

Anyone making pressure-sensitive glue, double-sided tape, or label glue—who hasn't been scammed by SIS?

Is it a batch of film rolls returned in summer? Or SBS pretending to be SIS, and it gets brittle as soon as it's on the machine? Or is recycled material used as a secondary brand, and the glue comes off in just three months?
