There is an unofficial hierarchy of disdain in the textile world: those who produce polyester filament look down on those who make staple fiber, those who make staple fiber look down on those who do spinning, and those who do spinning think that sizing work is just 'slurry mixing'.

Interestingly, when it comes to the warping sizing process, no one can bypass PVA. Without it, high-count, high-density fabrics simply cannot be woven; the yarn will fuzz, break, and fly off as soon as it goes on the machine.

What's even more interesting is that genuine PVA is ridiculously expensive, and small manufacturers don't dare to buy generic brands casually—afraid that the solubility won't be right, a whole vat of paste could be ruined, and the entire warp of yarn could be wasted.

To put it bluntly, PVA is not some unwanted commodity; it’s the 'invisible yet indispensable' player in textile pulp and vinylon fiber. This article will clarify the details of PVA byproducts, so you can decide whether these byproducts can really go into your pulping tank after reading it.

PVA is not plastic; it works by being water-soluble.

The scientific name of PVA is polyvinyl alcohol, which is a water-soluble thermoplastic resin.

Note, it is different from ordinary plastics. Other plastics rely on heating to melt and injection molding, while PVA dissolves in water—slowly in cold water, quickly in hot water—turning into a transparent glue-like liquid, which is then sized, formed into a film, and spun into fibers.

It can do quite a lot of work: sizing warp yarns for textiles, drawing vinylon fibers, making polyvinyl alcohol optical films (the core layer of polarizers), producing raw materials for PVB interlayers, coating paper, and making water-soluble packaging films.

The global landscape is highly concentrated. In terms of capacity and market share, the top three foreign companies are basically dominated by Japan.

The first-tier company is Japan's Kuraray, with its POVAL™ series, an annual production capacity of about 258,000 tons, and facilities in Okayama and Kashiwazaki in Japan, Frankfurt-Horst in Germany, and Texas in the United States. Its global market share is around 20%, and its PVA raw materials for optical films account for 70% to 80% of the global market.

The second tier is Japan Synthetic Chemical Industry (Nippon Gohsei, now part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group), with the Nichigo G-Polymer brand, a production capacity of about 185,000 tons, and a market share of about 12%.

The third tier is Japan's Sekisui Chemical, with a production capacity of about 150,000 tons, and it has facilities in Tarragona, Spain, and the United States.

These three companies together tightly control the global discourse on high-end PVA.

The secondary brand is not a defective product; the difference is that it was half a notch off on the maturity test report.

So what's the deal with the PVA sub-brand?

Let's start with the definition. For PVA from the same manufacturer and the same brand, some batches may not fully meet certain inspection indicators when leaving the factory. Those that pass are labeled with the main brand, and those that don’t fully meet the standards are labeled as a secondary brand. It is still made of the original polymer particles from the factory, not recycled material.

The four main sources: head and tail materials when starting or stopping the equipment, transition materials during grade switching, batches with slight exceedance in alcoholysis degree or viscosity due to process fluctuations, and tail materials from the secondary line.

PVA has a special characteristic: it is processed to be water-soluble, and its degree of alcoholysis and viscosity directly determine the dissolution rate and the viscosity of the glue solution. Secondary brands often fall short in these two aspects.

Let's talk about Ke Le Li first. This company is an unavoidable name in the PVA industry.

POVAL™ is its signature. High alcoholysis degree grades are used for warp sizing and vinylon fibers, while low alcoholysis degree grades are used for PVB and adhesives. It almost has a monopoly in raw materials for optical-grade PVA films.

What does its secondary brand look like? Most of them have an alcoholysis degree that is off by one or two percentage points, or a viscosity that falls half a grade. The molecular chains haven't been changed, and after dissolving in water, the glue solution has transparency and adhesion basically at the same level as the main brand, but for tasks like making optical films, which require extremely stable alcoholysis degrees, it can't be used.

Where is it used? In textile sizing, ordinary vinylon staple fiber, paper coating, and industrial adhesives. These applications are more tolerant of alcoholysis degree, so the secondary brand can fully handle them.

Japanese synthetic chemistry, the cold water instant line is its main field.

Then there's Japan's synthetic chemical industry. This one follows a specialty route.

Nichigo G-Polymer is its water-soluble PVA grade, characterized by fast dissolution in cold water, low viscosity, and high dispersion. It has its own patents in high barrier water-soluble films and optical grade fields.

Its by-products are commonly batches where the degree of polymerization and degree of alcoholysis are near the critical line. Compared with Keleli by-products, synthetic chemical by-products lean more towards 'marginal specification material' — it's not poor quality, it's just that some indicator on the test report is on the line.

Where is it used? In water-soluble packaging films, quick-dissolving components in textile sizing, and adhesives in the ceramics industry. Its by-brand is actually more useful in situations requiring cold-water quick dissolving, because that particular deviation has little impact on the quick dissolving.

Jishui Chemical, don't randomly recognize the sub-brands that come down with the supporting PVB line

The third company is Sekisui Chemical. Many people don't know that it produces PVA, but it is an established player in PVB interlayers and PVA resin.

Its PVA facilities are located in Spain and the United States and follow the route of matching PVB. The sub-brands are mostly transition materials produced when matching their own PVB lines or batches with viscosity fluctuations.

Where is it used? Glue, fiber processing, general film formation. The subsidiary brand of Jishui does not circulate much domestically, but once you encounter it, the cost-performance ratio is quite good. The key is to clearly identify the source of the equipment, so as not to misattribute materials from other factories under its name.

The PVA secondary brand dissolves at a speed difference of half a beat, causing the sized yarn to fuzz and break.

How to choose a PVA sub-brand? Let me point out a few real pitfalls.

First, ask about alcohol dissolving first. The most common problem with PVA secondary brands is alcohol disintegration rate—a 100% difference in alcohol disintegration makes the sizing viscosity much worse, and the yarn feels completely different. Before entering the factory, test alcohol lysis and viscosity; don't apply the plastic melting test method to PVA.

Second, make sure the intended use matches properly. For high-demand parts like optical grade and polarizing film, honestly use the genuine brand; For sizing, regular film, and adhesive, the secondary brand is sufficient. Don't use the secondary brand to directly challenge optical components.

Third, check the batch samples. PVA secondary brands may have viscosity between batches; keep samples per batch, test one batch of slurry, then scale up, and don't load the whole shaft right away.

There is a client in Haikou specializing in warp yarn sizing processing. Previously, they bought a batch of unknown "Japanese PVA" at a low price, but the melting speed was half a beat slower, causing the sizing viscosity to fluctuate, and the warp yarn bristling rate of the woven fabric yarn was raised to 8%, reducing the whole batch of greige fabric. Later, they switched to the same grade of Kuraray sub-brand, matching alcohol dissolution and viscosity per batch sample, reducing the breakage rate to below 0.5%.

This is the value of selection—PVA sub-brands aren't unusable, but you need to know what and how much they differ. Each batch of retained samples and small test slurries is scaled up;

Don't use secondary brands to challenge optical-grade certified parts.

PVA this material, it's simple but water-soluble; complex is the delicate work of alcohol solubility and viscosity. Choose the right secondary brand, and one ton saves enough to prepare several batches of slurry; If you choose the wrong one, you lose all the warp yarn on the shaft.
