In the plastics industry, there's an unspoken hierarchy of disdain: those making LCP and PEEK think they're 'nobles,' those making PPA think they're 'neither high nor low,' and those making PA66 laugh at how ridiculously expensive PPA is.

But interestingly, the ones who really mess around engines aren't factories that can't afford PPA, but those that push cheap prices and pour 'so-called high-temperature nylon' into sensor housings.

The cabin temperature is 130 or 140, then soaked in oil and coolant, regular PA66 becomes soft, warped, and loose after a few months. PPA is made for this temperature range. But the problem is, the price of one ton of genuine PPA is almost enough to buy two tons of PA66. Thus, the sub-brand PPA business was forced out by the dilemma of "expensive but too afraid to use." PPA really

PPA in Chinese called polyphthalimide, which simply means stuffing terephthalic acid into nylon molecular chains, raising the melting point from PA66's 260 degrees to above 300 degrees Celsius, with long-term temperature resistance consistently above 150 degrees. Intake manifolds, intercooler housings, sensor connectors, and oil pan accessories around the engine are basically dominated by this category.

The global market in this category is highly concentrated. According to third-party market reports (2024–2026), the leading foreign giants are roughly as follows: Solvay, whose high-performance polymer business was spun off in 2023 under Syensqo, branded Amodel®, holds just over 20% global share, with an annual capacity of over 25,000 tons at its Suzhou base; Celanese completed the acquisition of the former DuPont Transportation & Materials division in 2022, branded Zytel® HTN, long-term leader in the high-end PPA sector; BASF, branded Ultramid® Advanced, follows closely behind. These three companies together have taken over most of the global market, with Switzerland's EMS-GRIVORY and others still holding a share.

Secondary brand is not defective; it's the grade in the same batch from the original factory that hasn't touched the line .

Let me explain a concept first—what is a secondary brand.

Secondary brand is not defective, and it's definitely not recycled material. It's the batch from the same manufacturer and grade, where some indicators didn't fully meet the line during factory inspection. The polymerization comes from the same line, and the molecular structure is exactly the same as the genuine brand. The melt finger may be off, the color half a degree off, or the ash content one extra block, but it's still original factory particles, not processed by secondary heating.

Its sources are basically four: unstable head and tail material when the unit starts and shuts down, transition material during grade changes, batches with slight drift in certain indicators during production, and auxiliary line scrap. The same grade is divided into two tiers: selected and regular pairs, usually priced lower than the genuine version.

Solvay/Syensqo: Amodel is a veteran in the PPA industry

When discussing PPA, you can't avoid talking about Amodel. This brand has been in business for over forty years, and you can almost always find it on the certification lists for automotive engine accessories. Its features are solid long-term high-temperature and chemical resistance. For factories that don't focus on exterior highlights and only make internal structural parts, choosing the right selected sub-brand ensures the engine perimeter temperature resistance doesn't decrease at all. Its sub-brands come in both large and small packages on the market, so you can choose according to usage.

Celanese (formerly DuPont): Zytel HTN has taken the path with the highest usage

Zytel® The name HTN is basically familiar to veteran engineers. It originally belonged to DuPont, and in 2022 merged with DuPont's Transportation and Materials division into Celanis. The formula and grade system remain unchanged, just changed ownership. It has the widest application range in high-end PPAs, including automotive electronics, high-voltage connectors, and engine peripherals.

HTN systems are very finely divided, with 52 series, 51 series, and 54 series corresponding to different copolymers and fillings. Sub-brand materials are often produced in batches with slight deviations in glass fiber content or flowability. For manufacturers that make general intake parts and sensor housings, its secondary brand offers great value for money, provided you recognize the brand suffix clearly and don't use the 51 series to compete with the 52 series.

BASF: Ultramid Advanced follows a hydrolysis resistance and low warpage route

BASF's Ultramid® Advanced (T series) is considered a latecomer in PPA but solid. Its strengths are hydrolysis resistance and dimensional stability, suitable for long-term water conditions like engine cooling circuits and thermal management components.

's secondary brand material sources are similar to others, with slight batch deviations. For parts that don't require the highest certification but need to operate long-term in humid and hot environments, BASF's secondary brand is an underrated option. For

PPA sub-brand orders, don't be led by price tags

buying PPA sub-brands. The biggest taboo is to focus only on price. First, confirm that the grade suffix matches your working condition. There are several sets of PPA copolymer systems alone, so mixing them up is basically buying for nothing. Second, high-temperature nylon must be thoroughly pre-dried after absorbing moisture. The same goes for sub-brands—if not properly dried, they will still bubble and crack. Third, for small batch trial production, first run thermal aging and dimensional retesting, so you don't rush into the machine at the ton level right away. Fourth, make sure the original factory packages are used. Both large and small packages must have batch numbers. Don't accept those "mixed loose packages" with unknown origins.

To put it bluntly, secondary brands save on procurement costs, not technical standards.

Genuine PPA is so expensive that we don't dare to stock up on engine peripheral parts. Recycled PPA warps as soon as it is exposed to high temperatures. The secondary-brand PPA from major manufacturers covers both the temperature resistance level and cost.

Here are a few useful mnemonic phrases you can use directly:

For cabin temperatures consistently above 130, it must withstand engine oil and coolant—use PPA, don’t stubbornly force PA66;

Certified parts, exterior glossy parts — use genuine ones, don’t save money on this.

Internal structural parts, non-appearance parts — you can look at the sub-brand, try before using;

First firmly recognize the suffix of the grade, and do not mix up copolymer systems.

The secondary board is pre-dried as usual and re-tested after heat aging as usual;

Require original factory packaging, require batch number samples, do not accept loose packages mixed together;

For large quantities, use large packaging; for sampling and testing, use small packaging.

There is a client in Guilin that manufactures intake sensor housings for car engines. They had been using regular PA66, but when the engine bay temperature rose in summer, the housings would deform and the connectors would be improperly installed, resulting in a return rate of 8% within three months. Later, they switched to an imported off-brand PPA, re-dried the material according to engine conditions, and retested for thermal aging. This brought the return rate down to below 0.4%, and the material cost per piece was even lower than that of the original branded PPA. This is the significance of choosing the right level — it’s not about being cheap, it’s about allocating your resources where they are truly needed.
