At this time of year, factories that make LED lamp cup reflectors start to get headaches: after a batch of thin-walled reflectors goes through reflow soldering, some turn yellow, some warp, and their light reflectivity drops significantly. Customers want bright white light and precise dimensions, but what you deliver is a batch of yellowing 'little dishes'.

The problem often doesn't lie in the skill of the injection molding technician, but in the material. LED reflectors need to go through lead-free reflow soldering, with the oven temperature going up to 260 degrees or higher two or three times. Ordinary high-temperature nylon softens, deforms, and discolors immediately. There are only a few materials that can withstand this kind of treatment, and PA4T is among the toughest of them.

But genuine PA4T is expensive, and the material for thin-walled parts cannot be spared, so the bosses making reflectors curse while looking for alternative brands. After searching around, they discovered an embarrassing fact: in the whole world, there is almost only one company that can truly mass-produce pure resin with this material.

PA4T: The kind of hardcore person who pushes amide density to the max

PA4T is called poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), and the monomers are butanediamine and terephthalic acid. It compresses the carbon chain to the shortest '4', then brings in the aromatic ring. The amide density is extremely high, it crystallizes quickly, and its melting point and rigidity are near the ceiling of high-temperature nylons. Its most crucial ability is that it does not deform during lead-free reflow soldering, can achieve flame retardancy even at very thin wall thicknesses to pass V-0, and has a high CTI—exactly what LED reflectors and SMT connectors need.

But the structure of this category is even more extreme than PA46. According to industry data, the only company in the world that truly has the capability for large-scale production of PA4T is basically Envalior, with the grade ForTii®. They have mastered the 'C4 diamine' technology — that is, the bio-based route to butanediamine — controlling everything from monomer to polymer. Others who want to enter the market would struggle even at the raw material stage. Therefore, instead of forcing a comparison among three 'peer players,' based on the actual hierarchy: one dominates the market, accompanied by two peripheral competitors using adjacent materials to compete for applications.

Sub-card common sense: the tier in the same formula that hasn't crossed the line

Let's first calibrate the concept.

The secondary grade is not a defective product, not recycled material, and certainly not a cheap product mixed with other substances. It is a batch from the same manufacturer and the same grade where, during factory inspection, certain indicators did not fully meet the standard. Aggregated from the same production line, its molecular structure is consistent with the primary grade, though the melt index may be slightly different, the color hue off by half a shade, or reflectivity-related indicators slightly higher, but it is still original factory raw material.

Four sources: leftover materials from starting and stopping production, transition materials from grade switching, batches with minor fluctuations in specific indicators, and subsidiary line leftover materials. For the same grade, secondary grades are classified into selected secondary and ordinary secondary, with prices usually lower than the main grade.

Enhuali ForTii: PA4T started this meal alone, basically.

ForTii® is the flagship grade of PA4T. It uses 'C4 diamine' to achieve a high-crystallinity form, with top-notch high-temperature rigidity and mechanical strength in its class. It has stable dimensions, is compatible with lead-free reflow soldering, and the flame-retardant grade can pass V-0 even with a 0.2 mm wall thickness and has a CTI above 800 volts. It is widely used in LED reflectors and heat-resistant components in electronics and electrical applications.

Regarding the secondary cards, ForTii's secondary cards mostly come from batches with slight deviations in hue or fluidity. For factories producing non-high brightness, general lighting reflectors, they can still pick and sort the secondary cards, and they have the skill to pass through reflow soldering without deformation. There are both large and small packaging options, and sampling and mass production should be chosen based on the amount needed. Be cautious: because it is dominant in the market, there are quite a few imitations and 'same name, different material' products. Make sure to choose the original manufacturer and original packaging, check the batch number, and don’t be tempted by prices that are ridiculously low.

Colpoly Genestar (PA9T): Not making PA4T, but taking its business

Strictly speaking, Japan's Kolon Genestar® is PA9T, not PA4T. But in battlegrounds like LED reflectors and SMT connectors, where 'low water absorption and reflow soldering' are required, the two often compete side by side. Genestar has low water absorption and molds well, and it is used in both reflectors and connectors.

For manufacturers with tight budgets who also want to avoid ForTii's high prices, Genestar's sub-brand is an alternative option—provided your operating conditions are suitable for it. Its sub-brand similarly comes from slight deviations in batch specifications, and the base material is the same as the main brand.

Mitsui Chemicals ARLEN (PA6T): Another Para-Route

ARLEN® from Mitsui Chemicals Japan belongs to the PA6T system and is not pure PA4T, but it balances heat resistance, low water absorption, and moldability, and is suitable for SMT lead-free soldering electronic components. Its melting point reaches 320 degrees Celsius, and it also has good fluidity.

Its secondary material source is the same as others, suitable for reflector and connector manufacturers who are already using the PA6T system and want to reduce costs. Changing the material requires redoing reflow soldering validation; don’t directly apply the PA4T process.

Before getting started with the PA4T sub-card, think carefully about what you really want to take on.

The biggest pitfall of PA4T substitute brands is thinking that buying PA4T will solve everything. First, the circulation of pure PA4T substitutes is naturally small, and the market has more substitute brands of adjacent materials, so you need to first fix the grade and material system. Second, reflective devices must go through actual reflow soldering temperature curve testing, don’t just look at the TDP table. Third, moisture absorption still requires pre-drying; if thin-walled parts aren’t baked properly, they will bubble. Fourth, reflectivity and yellowness should be measured for each batch, and color-related substitutes especially need close monitoring.

To put it bluntly, just buying this stuff doesn't mean you'll win; it only counts after verification.
