International Major Brand Secondary Series · 07 GPPS

Let me tell you a number: globally, about one out of every three transparent disposable plastic cups is made of GPPS.

Spoons and forks, transparent lunch boxes, lampshades, CD cases, appliance panel linings...... These transparent parts you see every day are basically all made of GPPS. They are cheap, translucent, and easy to mold—the 'transparent infrastructure' of plastics.

But interestingly, despite such a large amount of GPPS, the secondary brand market is chaotic. Both transparent and moldable, some sell at official price, some at floor prices. The finished lunch boxes are translucent and clean, while the other is hazy and yellow. If you look closely, the problem isn't transparency, but the base material.

This article will clearly explain the global supply structure of GPPS and the principles of sub-brands.

GPPS, general-grade polystyrene, also called permeable styrene.

Styrene monomers polymerize transparent particles with high light transmittance, good rigidity, and quick molding, but their drawbacks are brittleness, poor impact resistance, and average temperature resistance. Therefore, they are suitable for making items that are not load-bearing or drop-resistant, and require transparency and aesthetics: disposable tableware, transparent packaging, lampshades, stationery, and home appliance interior parts.

Global GPPS supply is concentrated in the hands of several specialized styrene manufacturers. Based on production capacity and market share, the top foreign giants are mainly three: INEOS Styrene Collar, Chi Mei Industrial, and LG Chem.

INEOS Styrene is the global leader in polystyrene, with a large PS production capacity; Chimei is in Taiwan, the benchmark for transparent PS in the Asia-Pacific region; LG Chem is a Korean comprehensive chemical giant, producing both PS and ABS. These three are basically unavoidable names in the GPPS community.

GPPS secondary brands, let's first clarify what they are.

It's the part on the same manufacturer's production line with the same grade, where some factory inspection indicators slightly fall short of the genuine brand's standards—melt fingers float a bit, light transmission haze is a bit weak, hue is off. Molecular chains and genuine products are all in one place, but the transparent base remains unchanged.

Four sources: starting and stopping front and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, batch with slight exceedances due to process fluctuations, and auxiliary line tail materials. The GPPS production line operates hundreds of thousands of tons, and transition and tail materials are stable secondary brand sources in the main market.

boundary: genuine brand meets all indicators; secondary brand base material is consistent, with slight fluctuations in some indicators; recycled material is processed scraps and then pelletized; recycled material is recycled and pelletized. GPPS secondary brand can be used for interior parts, ordinary transparent parts, and color-matched parts; for high-transparency tableware for food contact and certified optical components, don't risk secondary brand products.

Let's start with INEOS Styrolution.

This company is the global leader in styrene-based resin, consistently ranking among the top globally in PS production capacity, with more than a dozen sets of facilities in Europe and worldwide. For GPPS, their trademark is STYROLUTION PS.

represents grades like 158 N/L, which is a high-temperature resistant GPPS with fast molding and stable dimensions, and has a good reputation for making XPS and heat-resistant transparent parts. Their materials are well recognized in the medical laboratory consumables and high heat-resistant transparent parts circles.

Its sub-brand features: fine craftsmanship, with main differences in melt finger and hue fluctuations, and a clean transparent base. It's very suitable for general transparent parts, color-matched parts, and non-food-contact transparent internal parts.

Now, let's talk about Chi Mei Industrial, a long-established chemical company from Taiwan.

Chi Mei is a benchmark presence in the Asia-Pacific GPPS community, consistently leading in market share for years. Their PS trademark is POLYREX®, and GPPS grades like PG-22, PG-33, PG-383M. Almost all domestic factories making transparent lunch boxes, lampshades, and daily necessities have used it.

PG-33 has good flowability and is used for transparent food containers and lampshades; PG-383M is more general-purpose injection molding and is used for lunch boxes and refrigerator drawers; PG-22 is a transparent high-strength grade. These grades are widely circulated in injection molding factories in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta.

Chimei's sub-brand characteristics: well-known grades and high market recognition, mostly general-purpose transparent small-floating materials. For packaging of ordinary transparent daily necessities and non-contact food, its sub-brand is a highly liquid option.

The third company is LG Chem, a Korean comprehensive chemical giant.

ranks among the world's top in PS production capacity, with bases in Korea, China, and the US. Its GPPS grades are general injection molding grades like 25SPR, suitable for TV shells, refrigerator shelves, and disposable cups. LG's characteristics are large equipment scale and stable batch supply.

LG Chemical's sub-brand features: general-purpose large plates, narrow sub-brand specs, suitable for home appliance liners and standard transparent packaging that do not require extreme transparency but require stable mass production. Their circulation volume in both the Korean domestic and Chinese markets is significant.

GPPS sub-brand selection, there are a few hard rules.

Recognize Transparent Light. GPPS secondary brands often have pitfalls in haze and yellowing. Measure light transmittance and color first upon arrival; for transparent parts, shine a strong light; if hazy or yellow, they are immediately returned.

Recognize the melting fingers. GPPS is brittle; if the melting finger is chosen incorrectly, thin-walled parts will crack. Use high-flow for tableware; use medium melting fingers for structural inner parts.

Correct usage. Secondary brands should avoid high-transparency tableware that comes into direct contact with food, and avoid optical grade. Ordinary transparent inner parts, color-matched parts, and non-contact packaging are the proper spots.

Anti-return. The common counterfeit for GPPS recycled materials is "yellowed transparent material." Ridiculously low transparent GPPS is most likely mixed with recycled materials.

Check the packaging to keep the batch. Available in both large and small packages, traceable samples.

Mnemonic:

1. Food contact high-transparency tableware and optical parts—genuine brand;

2. Ordinary transparent inner parts, color-matched parts, non-contact packaging—secondary brands can be used;

3. High heat resistance and transparency—check STYROLUTION PS 158 series;

4. For circulation, well-known brands, daily necessities—check Chimei POLYREX PG series;

5. For stable crotches, make home appliance liners—check LG Chem GPPS;

6. Measure light transmittance and color upon arrival; return if yellowish or hazy;

7. The price is abnormally low; first suspect mixed recycled material.

There is a client in Hangzhou, Zhejiang that produces transparent appliance panels and food packaging trays. They previously had a bad experience using a secondary brand of GPPS: trying to save money, they bought a batch of yellow transparent material wholesale, and the inner cover of the microwave knob turned dark after three months, leading the client to return a batch. Later, they switched to Chi Mei POLYREX's secondary GPPS for non-direct-contact appliance linings and ordinary transparent packaging. The measured light transmittance and chromaticity aligned, and the defect rate of darkening dropped from double digits to a few per thousand, while saving a portion of material costs.

When secondary GPPS enters the factory, measure the haze before approval, keep batch samples traceable, and make transparent parts correctly in one go. This is the value of using secondary brands in the right place—not compromising, not taking risks. Ningbo Cologne New Material Co., Ltd. has been dealing with imported secondary GPPS for many years, handling many similar material selection cases. Simply put, they help you intercept issues like 'transparent or not, yellowing or not' before the machine process.
