1 Overview

1.1 What is Recycled ABS

Recycled ABS (rABS, Recycled Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymer) is granulated material obtained by reprocessing ABS waste plastics through sorting, crushing, washing, melt filtration, granulation, and other procedures, primarily based on physical recycling. Its national standard is GB/T 40006.5-2021 "Plastics—Recycled Plastics—Part 5: ABS Materials," which came into effect on May 1, 2022. According to the source of the waste, it can be divided into two types: PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled), mainly from injection molding sprues, extrusion scraps, and defective products, which has high quality and low impurities; and PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled), originating from disassembled home appliances, disassembled automobiles, and electronic waste, which has more variable quality.

The main sources of waste include: household appliance dismantling (TVs, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioner casings), automobile dismantling (dashboards, door panels, bumpers), electronics (computers, monitors, routers, power adapter casings), and industrial sprue material. The typical process flow is: waste collection → dismantling → crushing (8-12mm) → sorting (density/static/NIR near-infrared/color sorting) → deep cleaning → melt extrusion pelletizing (200-220°C) → modified pelletizing → packaging. Density sorting uses the principle that ABS has a density of 1.03-1.06 g/cm³ and PP/PE floats for separation, achieving a purity of 98%-99% after deep sorting.

1.2 Core Values

First, emission reduction: According to the LCA research by the School of Environment, Tsinghua University ("China Plastic Circular Economy White Paper 2024"), compared with virgin ABS, each ton of recycled ABS reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 67% and reduces fossil energy consumption by 58%; industry reports generally indicate that physical recycling lowers the carbon footprint by 60%-70%. 2 Application Areas and Specific Products

In 2025, the downstream application structure of recycled ABS is approximately: electronics and electrical appliances 41.3%, automotive 22.7%, packaging and consumer goods 25.1%, and construction and medical around 10.9% (according to the Dou Ding Net ABS resin recycling report). 2.1 Electronics and Electrical Appliances

Electronics and electrical appliances are the main applications for recycled ABS. The automotive sector is a rapidly growing field for recycled ABS, with the core material requirements being low VOC, weather resistance, heat resistance, high impact retention, and compliance with IMDS traceability; automotive-grade PCR-ABS requires a Charpy impact greater than 18 kJ/m² and no structural deformation at temperatures ranging from -30°C to 90°C.

3 Industry Classification System

Recycled ABS does not have a unified 'grade' system. The industry usually classifies it according to five dimensions: national standard naming (GB/T 40006.5-2021), industry A/B/C grading, waste plastic classification codes (GB/T 37547-2019), processing applications, and special certifications. 4.1 National Standard Baseline and Typical Values for Each Level

GB/T 40006.5-2021 specifies the basic requirements for qualified recycled ABS; in industry practice, the typical properties of Grade A, B, and C materials are shown in the table below. Compared with virgin ABS (ash content ≤0.1%, notched impact strength ≥10.0 kJ/m²), the performance of recycled materials fluctuates with the number of recycling cycles and sources, and modification and pelletizing are required to restore it.

4.2 Classification by Purpose

Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR, 220℃/10kg) is the primary criterion for grading recycled ABS, directly determining the applicable molding processes and product range. Injection molding grade has high fluidity, suitable for thin-walled/complex components; extrusion grade has low fluidity, requiring high melt strength; electroplating grade has special requirements for the butadiene phase structure; high-gloss grade has strict limits on black spots and surface gloss.

5 Color System

The color system of recycled ABS directly affects its selling price and application direction: black material can cover impurities/yellowing well and is relatively low in cost; white/porcelain white material needs to overcome yellowing, priced 1,000-3,000 yuan/ton higher; natural color material is of better quality but needs to be sorted separately; mixed color material is only used for low-end non-appearance parts.

6.1 Southeast Asia Import Channels and Source Background

Policy Background: Since 2021, China has completely banned the import of solid waste, but compliant recycled plastic pellets (non-solid waste) can still be imported, subject to customs "three unifications" (unified model, unified specification, unified packaging). By 2025, China is expected to import 12 million tons of plastic pellets, and Southeast Asia (Thailand/Malaysia/Vietnam) enjoys zero tariff treatment through RCEP. Among them, Vietnam's waste plastic pelletizing capacity in 2024 will be about 680,000 tons, nearly triple compared to 2020, with about 65% operated by Chinese or Chinese-controlled enterprises, making it an important overseas source for China's recycled ABS imports.

Characteristics of Each Country: Vietnam is one of the main destinations for Chinese capital going global, mainly producing PP/PE/ABS recycled pellets, with low labor costs, and Haiphong/Ho Chi Minh Port as core ports; Thailand is an exporter of high-end recycled materials, mainly producing PET bottle flakes and recycled engineering plastic pellets, with a national plastic waste management roadmap; Malaysia is a transit + processing center, with Port Klang as the core; Indonesia is an emerging producer, with Surabaya Port; The Philippines mainly supplies low-end waste, with LDPE/PP waste being the majority.

Chinese Enterprises Going Global Model: Commonly adopts a "port + industrial park" dual-core model, building pretreatment centers in Haiphong (Vietnam), Lin Chabang (Thailand), and Surabaya (Indonesia), forming an integrated industrial chain of "overseas recycling→ overseas sorting→ overseas pelletizing → sea return to China/export to Europe and America." Quality characteristics of imported recycled ABS: Chinese-funded enterprises in Vietnam and Thailand generally have product quality of Grade B or above; Material sources are mostly local electronics and electrical factory scraps (PIR) or imported scrap sorted and pelletized; The color is mainly black, with white/natural color being rare; Usually accompanied by GRS/ISCC PLUS certification. Industry qualitative grade distribution is: Grade A about 10%-15%, Grade B about 50%-60%, Grade C about 25%-35%.
