In the engineering plastics circle, there is an unspoken hierarchy of disdain: those who work with PEEK look down on those who work with PEI, those who work with PEI look down on those who work with PPS, and those who work with PPS think that PPO and PCT are 'still not tough enough.' Interestingly, the material that consistently fails most spectacularly in mass production each year is PPS—not because it can't withstand high temperatures, but because too many people treat 'resistant to 2000 degrees and flame-retardant' as the entirety of what PPS is.
As a result, the injection molding burned, the glass fibers were exposed, and the parts were as brittle as cookies. PPS really is fireproof, and it's really brittle too. Before choosing a secondary brand, first get to know its temperament.
PPS: Adding a sulfur atom to the benzene ring makes it flame-retardant to V-0 without adding flame retardants
PPS, polyphenylene sulfide, has benzene rings and sulfur atoms alternating along the molecular chain. Its melting point is around 280°C, and it can withstand long-term temperatures above 200°C. It is flame-retardant without adding any flame retardant agents, reaching UL94 V-0, and it is nearly insoluble and resistant to chemical corrosion. Automotive thermal management, electronic connectors, water pump impellers, and lamp holders are all its territory. It has two types: cross-linked and linear. The cross-linked type is low-cost with average purity; the linear type has high purity, good toughness, and is clean enough for electronic use.
The top three foreign companies globally, ranked by capacity and market share, are: Japan's Polyplastics with DURAFIDE, holding around 20% of the global share; Japan's Toray with Torelina, holding about 13%; and Belgium's Solvay (now Syensqo) with Ryton, holding about 10%. Kureha's Fortron linear PPS is another important source. This is the ranking based on capacity and share.
PPS Secondary Plate: Original factory material, not recycled material from overheated history
How did the PPS sub-brand come about? It follows the same logic as all original sub-brands: the native particles come from the same grade and the same polymerization line of Polyplastics or Toray, with identical molecular chains. It's just that during factory inspection, certain indicators like melt flow index, purity, or color hue slightly deviate from internal control limits, so they are classified as a sub-brand. There are four main sources: leftover material from starting and stopping the line, transitional material when switching grades, batches with melt flow index variation due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary lines.
The boundary with recycled material is especially critical here: PPS processing temperature is over 300 degrees, and the recycled material has already been overheated before, with broken glass fibers, resulting in reduced toughness and purity; electronic-grade PPS has strict requirements for chlorine content and metal ions, which recycled material simply cannot meet. The sub-brand is made from original factory virgin pellets. It's worth noting: PPS sub-brands are suitable for general automotive structural parts and electronic internal parts, but for high-purity semiconductor-grade applications or low-chlorine electronic connector critical parts, the genuine brand must be used. Packaging comes in large and small packages.
Polyplastics DURAFIDE: linear and pure, thick with automotive electronics certification
Polyplastics is the big brother in this field. DURAFIDE is a linear PPS jointly developed with Wu Yu, with high purity and good toughness, and has strong certifications in the automotive and electronics sectors. Its sub-brand features a full range of grades and a clean base for linear materials, used for water pump impellers, lamp holders, and general connectors, and the sub-brand offers good cost-performance.
Note: DURAFIDE comes in both filled and pure resin lines. The glass fiber content varies by grade, so the shrinkage rate is different. Do not use the filled secondary brand for thin-walled precision parts.
Toray Torelina: crosslinked and linear types, grades are divided according to applications
The second Toray Torelina produces both cross-linked and linear types; the cross-linked type has low cost, the linear type has high purity, and the low-chlorine electronic grade is comprehensive. Its sub-brand circulates quite a bit in automotive thermal management and engine peripheral components.
Toray's grades are subdivided according to applications. When making high-temperature water valve parts, use hydrolysis-resistant grades; don’t force a general-purpose grade.
Solvay Ryton: Fully certified, with a solid reputation for automotive functional parts
The third is Solvay/Solvay's Ryton. Ryton was originally a brand from Chevron Phillips, and it is now under the Solvay system. The Suzhou base has considerable annual production capacity, and it has both automotive IATF and semiconductor certifications. Its sub-brands have a solid reputation in automotive functional parts and electronics.
Comparison of three: Polyplastics linear pure, Toray fine grade, Ryton certified full. When choosing a PPS secondary brand, first determine whether you want a cross-linked type or linear type, whether it is hydrolysis resistant, and whether it meets low-chlorine electronic grade.
Three issues with PPS secondary cards: brittleness, floating fibers, chlorine content
First is brittleness. PPS itself is brittle, and the secondary brand has a relatively high melt flow index and low molecular weight, so the molded parts crack easily when dropped. For automotive structural parts, test the cantilever beam impact first. Second is glass fiber exposure. The secondary brand is unevenly filled, causing surface fibers on exterior parts, so do not use it for exterior components.
Thirdly, chlorine content and hydrolysis: electronic-grade and hydrolysis-resistant components have strict requirements, and even a slight deviation in chlorine content in sub-brands will not pass. In addition, although PPS absorbs little moisture, drying before injection molding cannot be skipped, and the same applies to sub-brands. Large packaging is suitable for mass automotive parts, while small packaging is suitable for prototyping.

PPS Secondary Brand Material Selection Mnemonic
First, check the linear cross-linking, and for electronic parts, select low-chlorine types; second, test impact toughness, and for structural parts, pass the cantilever beam test; third, check glass fiber content, and for appearance parts, block floating fibers; fourth, verify chlorine content and hydrolysis, and for water-resistant parts, use high-temperature water; fifth, follow the process and control drying, do not cut corners when injection molding at over three hundred degrees.
There is a customer in Xinxiang who makes automotive electronic water pump impellers. Previously, they did not use the genuine Bayer material, and they couldn't reduce the cost of a single impeller. Later, they replaced non-appearance secondary impeller parts with a sub-brand of the same grade; heat resistance and hydrolysis resistance are in the same range as the genuine brand. The cantilever impact test has been passed, and the impeller cost has been reduced, while appearance parts and key sealing parts still use the genuine brand.
This is the measure of PPS backup grades—their fundamental fire resistance and heat resistance are fully retained, while the distinction lies in whether they are brittle or pure. The PPS backup grade is like that low-key brother at home who doesn't like to stand out compared to the main grade; it's processed on the same sulfur polymerization line, only missing a stamp on the melt index report, but its fundamental fire and heat resistance remains intact. Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. has been producing imported PPS backup grades for many years, with stable channels from BASF, Toray, and Solvay, and has handled many cases for materials selection in automotive electronic components.
