1. 认证级汽车连接器、安规件——用正牌;
2. 一般结构件、内件、配色件——副牌能兜底;
3. 熔指先测,飘了别上机;
4. 加纤牌号先确认玻纤标称值;
5. 巴斯夫Ultradur、塞拉尼斯Celanex/Crastin、宝理DURANEX,先认厂;
6. 大包装跑量、小包装试机,原厂原包;
A ton of genuine PBT costs over 20,000 yuan, and a container adds up to hundreds of thousands in capital; What about switching to recycled material? One batch of scorching, one mold corroding—mold repair costs ten times more than materials. Even elementary school students can calculate this amount, but when ordering, some people only calculate the whole amount.
Factories making electronic connectors and automotive connectors have quietly gained another option in recent years: imported major PBT sub-brand materials. These are not cheap products used to hold the bilge; they are original factory materials with slight deviations in melting fingers or hues within the same polymerization unit. Using them correctly, both cost and quality are balanced.
This article thoroughly explains the precision work of PBT as an engineering plastic, how to select from three leading foreign manufacturers, and also sub-brand materials.
The tough
PBT polyester in connectors, polybutylene terephthalate, is a cousin to PET but crystallizes faster, has a shorter molding cycle, stable dimensions, chemical resistance, and good electrical insulation. After adding fiberglass, rigidity and heat resistance are further improved. For connector frames, connectors, and switch housings, tens of thousands of pieces can be made in one trip, thanks to its fast demolding and stable dimensions.
To put it simply, PBT is the "precision batch contender" among engineering plastics. The global PBT market isn't large, but the players are skilled and the brands are specialized. The top players abroad have long been BASF, Celanis, and Poly Plastics.
Sub-brand material: The same polymer line is missing one standard stamp
PBT The secondary brand still comes from four categories: start-stop head and tail material, grade switching transition material, batch of melt finger or hue slightly exceeding standards due to process fluctuations, and auxiliary line tail material.
It is still original original polymer particles, with molecular structure consistent with the genuine brand. Clear boundaries:
| Type | Source | Quality | Typical Use |
|---|
| Genuine Brand | Original Factory Standard Batch | Full Indicator Compliant, Batch Stable | High-Requirement Connector, Certified Parts |
| Subbrand | Original factory substandard batch | Slight deviations in individual indicators, substrate consistency | General structural parts, color-matched parts, internal parts |
| Reused/sprue material | Processed scraps re-pelletized | Already suffered once heat history | Low demand products |
| Regenerated material | Recycled plastic pelletizing | Large performance fluctuations | Low-end filling |
PBT Common deviations in sub-brands are melt finger and hue, while fiberglass content and dimensional stability are basically unchanged. For general structural parts and color-matched parts, these floating molds can handle it themselves; For certified automotive connectors, it's safer to use genuine brands.
BASF: The name Ultradur® is an industry benchmark .
The first company is BASF. In the PBT business, BASF's Ultradur® is almost textbook-level, with a global PBT share of about 18%, consistently ranking among the top. Representative grades include B 4520 (medium viscosity injection molding grade), B 4300 G6 (30% glass fiber reinforced), B 4521 PRO (medical-grade low warpage).
Characteristics of their sub-brand: strict grading system, mostly sub-brands focus on melting finger fine-tuning, making general fiberglass reinforced structural parts and internal parts, with stable performance and batch quality. For non-certified automotive connector parts, many manufacturers rely on it as a backup.
Celanese: Both Celanex® and Crastin® are in their company.
The second company is Celanese. Here's another fun fact: the "DuPont Crastin" mentioned by old buyers is now also under Celanese—DuPont's PBT business was later merged into Celanese, so now both Celanex® and Crastin® are under one company. Their global PBT market share is about 12%, and they are known for precision parts for automobiles and electrical products.
Celanes secondary brand advantages: complete grades, mature formulas, mainly for melting fingers and hue, making connector frames, switch housings, and other mass parts, with wide adjustment windows.
Polyplastics: A regular in Japanese precision injection molding
The third company is Polyplastics, a WinTech system jointly invested with Teijin, representing the brand DURANEX®. In the Japanese and Taiwanese connector circles, DURANEX® has a strong reputation, known for its stable size and uniform appearance. It also ranks among the top tier in global PBT market share.
Their secondary brand features minimal appearance and size deviation, making exterior parts and precision small structural parts. Using the secondary brand for mold testing saves a lot on prototyping costs.
When choosing PBT secondary brands, focus on melting fingers and fiberglass .
Hands-on Three Things. Let's start with melting fingers. A common deviation with PBT secondary brands is fusion fingers: test before injection molding, melt fingers float, filling and shrinkage are all messy. Then there's the fiberglass content. Fiberglass dispersion in fiber-added grades directly affects warpage, so sub-brands need to confirm the glass fiber nominal value. There is also layering of uses. Certified-grade automotive connectors and safety parts use genuine brands; General structural parts, internal parts, and color-matching parts are just right for secondary brands.
Packaging: Large packages run volume, small packages test machines—make sure to use original factory packaging. In short: Genuine PBT is a container holding capital, recycled material is a batch for molds, and a big factory's secondary brand is the rocky rock that neither side is shore but firmly stepped on.

Beijing Connector: Sub-brand reduces equipment adjustment losses to 30% of the original
Share a case. A customer in Beijing specializing in electronic connectors and automotive connectors previously added some recycled material to save material. But during peak season, mold demolding and sticking, size errors, and high equipment adjustment losses resulted in a 5% scrap rate per batch. Later, they switched to PBT sub-brand material from a major imported manufacturer, with melt fingers and substrate stability aligned, demolding and dimensions stabilized, and adjustment losses reduced to 30% of the original, and scrap rate dropped from 5% to within 0.5%.
saved over a thousand yuan per ton of material, saving enough in one year to cover half a technical team. This is the cost of material selection—genuine brands are too expensive and cost capital, recycled materials are too wild for mold grinding, and the sub-brand from big factories is stuck in the middle. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has long handled imported major manufacturers' sub-brand materials. They handle many cases for connectors and electronic parts annually. In short, they help you finalize "fast demolding, accurate dimensions, and batch stability" before mass production.
Seven Mnemonics: PBT secondary brands won't lose money
1. Certified automotive connectors and safety parts—use genuine brands;
2. General structural parts, internal parts, color-matching parts—secondary brands provide a safety net;
3. Test the melting fingers first; if they float, don't use the machine;
4. Confirm the nominal value of fiberglass for fiber-added grades first;
5. BASF Ultradur, Celanese/Crastin, Poly DURANEX—first identify the manufacturer;
6. Large packages for volume runs, small packages for testing, original factory packaging;
7. No matter how cheap recycled materials are, avoid precision parts.
A few closing words
PBT, this material makes a living by crystallizing quickly and having stable dimensions; connectors and precision parts can't do without it. Secondary-brand material isn’t scrap; it’s the original manufacturer’s pellets from the same production line, just missing a certification mark. Official-brand material is too expensive and ties up capital, while recycled material is too rough on molds. A big company's secondary brand is like a reef that doesn’t fully anchor anywhere but stands firm—choose the right manufacturer, measure melt flow correctly, and use it in the right scenario, and this deal is profitable however you calculate it.
