三,小样先吹一卷,脆化时间拉得够长再放量;
Let's do the math first.
One ton of PBSA costs a few hundred to eight hundred yuan more than the secondary brand. Factories that blow degradable plastic film can use about twenty tons per container, saving tens of thousands, which makes the boss happy. But plastic film is laid in the ground; after just two months, it breaks into fragments. When crop seedlings just sprout, the film disappears first, farmers demand compensation, agricultural departments fail inspections, and the money paid per greenhouse is enough to buy three tons of genuine feedstock.
Even elementary school students can calculate this, but every spring when ordering, someone always forgets it. The issue isn't whether PBSA is expensive, but whether you understand what is the difference between secondary and genuine brands. Today, I'll explain PBSA thoroughly.
PBSA is softer than PBS? Why put it in the
PBSA of succinic acid–butanediol–adipic acid copolyester. Simply put, it's like forcing a segment of adipic acid into the PBS molecular chain. This extra cut immediately softens and toughens the material, with a break elongation rate of over 500%, and its modulus is much lower than pure PBS.
Soft has its advantages. It's especially suitable for film blowing—mulch, packaging bags, wet wipe lamination. The film bubbles can be stretched open, tough, and won't crack when folded. But softness comes with its trade-offs: heat resistance is worse than PBS, not crisp enough, and thick-walled parts look soft and saggy. So you see, PBSA was born to be a thin film.
Here, we need to explain its relationship with PBS. PBS is pure aliphatic, harder and has a higher melting point; PBSA adds adipic acid, which means a smoother structure is inserted into the molecular chain, lowering crystallinity and instantly softening and toughening the material. You can think of it as: with the same base, PBSA wears an extra elastic jacket. Because of this difference, pure PBS is suitable for injection molding hardware, PBSA is better for blown film for soft bags, and if used backwards, it can be another backlash.
The major foreign companies making PBSA worldwide overlap heavily with PBS, but each has its own focus. Ranked by overseas production capacity and market share, the first tier is still the same few familiar faces: Japan's Resonac (formerly Showa Denko), South Korea's IRE Chemical, and Mitsubishi Chemical's PTT MCC Biochem. PBSA is a niche pool with many domestic players, but today we're only talking about the non-mainland camp.
The concept of secondary brands shouldn't be mixed with recycled materials .
Before talking about big companies, let's make the secondary brand a secret.
The secondary brand is the part of the same manufacturer and grade that didn't fully meet the official brand standards during factory inspection. If the same batch of polycondensate material passes all items and is labeled as genuine, if one or two indicators fall short, it's considered a secondary brand. These are original factory virgin particles, with molecular structure aligned with genuine brands, not crushed or reprocessed.
Four sources: start-and-stop starting and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, batch with slight exceedances due to process fluctuations, and secondary line scraps. Draw the boundaries again: genuine brands all meet standards; Secondary brands have minor deviations in some indicators, no substrate replacement; Reprocessed materials are processed scraps and remelted, adding an extra heat cycle; Recycled materials are recycled from waste plastic, with unstable performance. Four types of materials, don't mix them.
Resonac's Bionolle 3001, a familiar face in the mulch film industry
Japan's Resonac (formerly Showa Denko) Bionolle, is a well-known brand in PBSA. Especially the 3001 series of film-grade materials, which have benchmark tensile and elongation at break, tensile strength over 20 MPa, and elongation at break over 500, making the film bubble very stable when blown up.
's sub-brand features clean cutting of transition materials, with common deviations concentrated in melting point and melting index, and the molecular weight distribution of particles is not much different from the genuine brand. Used for agricultural and horticultural films that require uniform thickness, the sub-brand is fully qualified. Both large and small packages circulate in circulation.
IRE Chemical's Enpol, a flexible brand from Korea
The second Korean IRE Chemical brand is Enpol, making PBSA in Gunsan, covering both film and injection grade products. Their PBSA has a considerable market presence, with a long-standing overseas market share among the top.
Enpol secondary brand is characterized by slightly larger batch differences, with melting fingers and elongation rates occasionally exceeding the official brand's range. This material is not suitable for immediate high-end transparent film, but it is very cost-effective for mixing with other degradable materials, making general agricultural cover films, or packaging linings. Its price is also a notch gentler than Resonac.
PTT MCC Biochem's BioPBS family has technical foundations in
Thailand's PTT MCC Biochem, Mitsubishi Chemical Technology System, BioPBS. They follow the "bio-based compostable" approach in the PBSA line and also have a presence in film-grade materials.
's sub-brand often deviates from the bio-based content calculation and hue sections. Because the certification line is strict, sub-brands often don't suffer from poor performance but "just a little bit missing stamps." Using them to make ordinary biodegradable films or industrial packaging films that don't require certification marks is very practical.
Numbers don't lie; sub-brands test these two first
PBSA selecting sub-brands, don't just focus on price, focus on two numbers.
The first is elongation at break. PBSA relies on toughness; if its elongation drops a bit, the mulch film will become brittle when laid on the ground. The second is the melting point. If the melting point is low, the film blowing temperature must be lowered; otherwise, the film bubbles collapse and there are more fractures. For PBSA secondary brands of the same grade, the elongation at break usually fluctuates around 500%, fluctuating by several dozen percentage points, and the melting point is two degrees lower than the genuine brand. The difference in frosting and broken rate during film blowing depends entirely on whether you tested these two numbers first.
Another rule: don't mix PBSA with PBS or PBAT. These three have similar names but differ in material properties. PBS is harder and better for injection molding, PBSA is softer for film blowing, and PBAT is a different path. The label and component on the sub-brand material packaging bag are first tested and verified by the test sheet—don't try to save time.
For example. In Weihai, Shandong, a client who made degradable agricultural mulch film bought a cabinet of untested sub-brands for a cheap price, and after two months, they broke into fragments, costing the farmer an entire greenhouse. Later, they switched to first testing elongation and melting point, then blowing up the sample, matching the data, then ramping up, and the brittle time was extended from two months to over four months, with no further claims. That's the accounting — the saved material money can't be based on betting on targets. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing the import degradable film sub-brand for years, helping clients clearly count these two sets of numbers, which is routine.

Conclusion: Four material selection tips
PBSA sub-brand, remember these four points:
First, measure elongation and melting point first; don't treat price as the sole standard;
Second, promote high-end certified films as genuine brands, and use sub-brands for ordinary cover films and blended materials;
Third, blow a roll of the sample first, then increase volume after the brittleness time is extended enough;
Fourth, original factory original particles, don't treat recycled materials as a secondary brand.
Who hasn't lost money in making degradable mulch film or packaging film? Did it break after two months of laying? Or did it break off halfway through the film blowing and scatter everywhere? Or did you save a few hundred yuan on material and lose a whole farmer's shack?
