1. 食品级、承压管、高透膜——上正牌;
2. 通用包装、内衬、非承压件——副牌可以用;
3. 做吹塑容器要双峰技术底子——看Lupolen;
4. 要量大稳定、成本友好——看SABIC;
5. 要工业容器、汽车件底子——看埃克森美孚;
6. 到货测熔指、测密度,留样再上机;

International Big Brand Sub-brand Series · 06 HDPE
01 You think you're buying materials, but you're actually opening a blind box
for HDPE procurement. Many people think they're buying materials, but actually they're just luck.
The bag is printed with the big brand logo, and the price is much cheaper than the genuine brand—it looks pretty appealing. Once the machine blows the molding, the bottle wall thickness fluctuates, and after three days of stacking, it becomes crooked; When the tube is squeezed out, the inner wall is spotted and leaks during the pressure test. You think you're buying HDPE, but you're actually opening a blind box.
Where did the problem lie? HDPE comes in countless grades, with melting indexes ranging from zero to tens. For blow molding, injection molding, pipes, films, one melting index difference means one production line missing. Same name but different prices, same factory, different lines—outsiders look at the bag, insiders look at melt fingers and density.
To put it bluntly, HDPE sub-brands aren't unusable; you need to first understand which process line you're buying from. This article thoroughly explains the global supply structure of HDPE and the sub-brand logic.
02 The bucket guy's plate: three giants are splitting
HDPE: high-density polyethylene, the "bucket guy" in polyolefins.
Density above 0.94, rigid, chemical-resistant, moisture-proof, and air-repellent; blow-molded for barrels and bottles, extrusion for pipe films, injection molding for turnover boxes and lids—so much so that you come into contact with them every day—shampoo bottles, milk bottles, tap water pipes, mulch films, all backed by it.
Global HDPE production capacity is highly concentrated. Based on capacity and market share, the top foreign giants are mainly three: Leanderbasell, SABIC, and ExxonMobil. These three are all integrated refining-to-polymerization chains, with costs and scale at the top tier.
LeanderBasel is a long-established global polyolefin giant, with HDPE market share consistently at the top; SABIC is backed by low-cost ethane from the Middle East and exports on a large scale; ExxonMobil is a representative of integrated refineries in the US, with a large production capacity.
03 The secondary brand is not recycled material, but the corner of the process line
HDPE What is a secondary brand? How is it different from the genuine brand?
Let me clarify first: The secondary brand of HDPE is the part on the production line of the same manufacturer and grade, where some factory inspection indicators slightly deviate from the genuine standard—the melt index is slightly floating, density is slightly off, and the hue or ash content is a notch different. The molecular chain and the genuine brand are made in the same line, not recycled from the reforge.
The four sources of sub-brands: starting and shutting down the unit, transition materials from grade changes, batches with slight exceedances due to process fluctuations, and auxiliary line tailings. HDPE has huge output; once the polymerization unit runs up, it can reach hundreds of thousands of tons. The head, tail, and transition materials account for a significant portion of the big plate, which is also the source of sub-brand supply.
Boundaries must be clearly drawn: genuine products meet all indicators and batches are stable; Sub-brand base materials are consistent, with slight fluctuations in some indicators; Reuse is processed scraps and then pelletized, having undergone one heat history; Reclaimed materials are recycled and pelletized, with large fluctuations. HDPE sub-brands can be used for internal parts, general packaging, and non-pressure-bearing pipes; For food-grade contact, pressure-bearing water pipes, and high-transparency films, just stick to the official brand.
04 LyondellBasell: Big brother of Twin Peaks technology
Let's start with LyondellBasell.
This company is headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and is a long-established global giant in polyolefin technology and production. Its PP output ranks among the top globally, and HDPE is also its main product. In terms of market share, LyondellBasell's annual HDPE capacity is in the million-ton range.
represents the brand brand; HDPE includes two series: Lupolen® and Alathon®. Lupolen represents Twin Peak and blow molding grades, making barrels and containers; Alathon covers injection molding and general-purpose grades. Domestic blow molding factories are familiar with these two brands.
Its sub-brand features: mature process system, Hostalen dual-peak technology is its specialty, sub-brand mainly differs in melting fingers and hue with slight fluctuations, making it smooth for general-purpose blow-molded containers and general packaging.
05 SABIC: Middle Eastern low-cost bulk goods
Now, SABIC, Saudi Basic Industries Company.
This company is backed by Saudi low-cost ethane raw materials, with a massive scale of integrated Middle East facilities, and exports large amounts of HDPE to the Asia-Pacific and globally. In terms of market share, SABIC firmly ranks among the top in HDPE, with annual capacity in the millions of tons.
's HDPE grades cover a wide range: blow molding grade for industrial barrels and hollow containers, film grade for packaging films, and pipe grade for water supply and drainage pipes. SABIC's characteristics are low raw material costs, stable overall operations, and competitive pricing among international manufacturers.
SABIC's sub-brand features: large volume, stable supply, mostly general-grade small fluctuating batches. They produce packaging barrels, ordinary pipe fittings, and liners that do not require strict certification; its sub-brand is a cost-effective option.
06 ExxonMobil: Performance Specialist in Integrated Refineries
The third company, ExxonMobil.
is an American integrated refining giant, offering a full range from crude oil to polymerization, ranking among the world's top in HDPE production capacity for years. Its strengths lie in high-performance PE grades and specialized technologies, with layouts in blow molding, films, and tubing.
's representative grade is the ExxonMobil HDPE series, with industrial containers, fuel tanks, and pressure pipes being its traditional strengths. Its materials are highly recognized in automotive fuel systems and industrial hollow container circles.
ExxonMobil's sub-brand features: slightly floating materials in mid-to-high-end grades. If you make industrial containers or general automotive structural components, its sub-brand performance is thicker than ordinary general-grade components, suitable for scenarios requiring rigidity and environmental resistance.
07 When choosing sub-brands, first identify the melt index and density
HDPE select the sub-brand, and I'll give you a few solid ones.
Recognize the melt finger. Blast molding requires a low melt index, injection molding requires a medium melt index, and film requires a medium high melt index. If you miss by one order, the machine will fail. Test the melt index first upon arrival; don't just look at the bag.
Recognize the density. Density determines rigidity and breathability. For pipes and containers, if the density is slightly off, pressure resistance and dimensions will change accordingly.
Regarding the purpose. For HDPE sub-brands, avoid food-grade, pressure-bearing drinking water pipes, and do not touch films requiring high transparency. General packaging, linings, non-pressure-bearing pipes, and turnover parts are the key positions.
Check the packaging. Both large and small packages are available; mass production uses large packages to save costs, trial machines use small packages flexibly. Batch samples are retained, so if problems arise, they can be matched.
Anti-counterfeiting. The price difference between HDPE sub-brands and recycled materials is huge; the ridiculously low "big brand sub-brands" almost always contain recycled materials.

08 Seven key tips, the middle way to avoid burn accidents
tips first:
1. Food-grade, pressure-bearing pipes, high permeability membranes—use genuine brand;
2. General packaging, linings, non-pressure-bearing parts—sub-brands are acceptable;
3. For blow molding containers, you need a foundation in Twin Peak technology—see Lupolen;
4. For large volume, stable and cost-friendly options—see SABIC;
5. For industrial containers and automotive parts base—look at ExxonMobil;
6. Upon arrival, check the melt index and density, take a sample, and then run it on the machine again;
7. The price is unusually low, first suspect recycled material.
There is a client in Guangzhou, Guangdong, that manufactures daily chemical packaging bottles and industrial pipes. Previously, in order to cut costs, they ran into problems with HDPE material: they switched to a cheaper batch, and the shampoo bottles they blew had uneven wall thickness, collapsing within three days of stacking, while some pipes leaked during pressure testing. Later, they switched to SABIC's secondary HDPE brand for non-pressure packaging barrels and general-purpose pipes. The melt index and density tests matched, the wall thickness defect rate was reduced from double digits to below one percent, and monthly material costs also dropped significantly.
This is the proper way to use secondary HDPE—use it in places that don’t require strict certifications but demand stable base materials. Ningbo Kolong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been selecting and supplying imported secondary HDPE for years, handling quite a few similar cases. To put it plainly, they help you find the safe middle ground between the major brand and low-cost recycled material.
Test the melt index, check the density, and verify the application; complete these three steps for the HDPE secondary brand before placing an order.
