Old Wu works in Beilun, Ningbo, making automotive exterior parts—rearview mirror shells, cooling grilles, window frame profiles—the workshop produces ASA work year-round. Last month, a model project changed its color scheme. The warehouse had two trays of raw ASA materials, LG and BASF too, and suddenly it became a material no one claimed.
ASA this material was chosen for its "outdoor weather resistance without yellowing," made for no-paint exterior and extruded sheets, with a high unit price. But sitting in the warehouse and exposed outside the car are two different things—baggage absorbs moisture over time, and the color and toughness change accordingly.
Old Wu's warehouse manager moved the material inside, and the ledger marked it as "pending processing." At the end of the workshop, the daily cut ASA sprue material is piled up in the corner, mixed with ABS sprue material. The pain point of
ASA is somewhat similar to AES: it looks like ABS, has a high weather premium, and if mixed in, the price drops.
Obsolete material is not an asset, it's a liability lying on the books.
ASA is weather-resistant ABS made mainly from acrylic rubber, with UV and weather resistance far surpassing ABS, specializing in automotive rearview mirror housings, grilles, window frame profiles, and outdoor building materials. Because it's a paint-free exterior material, the unit price is high and requirements strict, so once you keep stock, you spend a lot of money.
ASA left for a long time, it becomes like a plastic railing used outdoors for years—just after installation, it fades and turns black after exposure to wind and sun. The original material absorbs moisture when opened, but after reheating, it doesn't fully bake, causing the surface of the exterior parts to fog up and lose its shine. The no-paint selling point disappears.
The real problem in the workshop is the mixed materials. ASA and ABS sprue material look so similar, workers just pour it into one bag for convenience. Once mixed, the ASA weathering premium is wasted, and they can only be sold as regular ABS.
Weather-resistant materials are expensive because of the word "durability"; once mixed out, they're worthless.
Old Wu has contacted the collectors. The dealer picked up the material and said, "This is ABS, at ABS price." Old Wu shook his head on the spot—this was LG's LI911 and BASF Luran S material, for exterior trim, and the price was lower than regular ABS. But the dealer wouldn't listen; he refused to recognize ASA.
To put it bluntly, wholesalers instinctively lean toward ABS when it comes to materials that "look like ABS." It's not that they don't know about ASA; they just accept it without benefits—if they accept it, they have to offer you a good price; if not, they can squeeze you down.
Some vendors think that "plastic is divided into transparent and opaque" layers. You talk about durability, they negotiate with you about wholesale goods.
Cologne New Materials handles ASA recycling and clearly distinguishes the ins of exterior materials. Downstream factories producing automotive rearview mirrors, grilles, and building materials for popular ASA grades have been searching for long-term: LG Chem LI911, LI912, LI913; BASF Luran S 776S, 796S; Techno-UMG TECHNO ASA S210B and AE65F10; SABIC's GELOY series. We have targeted customers and can buy them in and proceed.
If you encounter different colors, uneven batches, or piled sprue materials, no worries—go into Cologne's own modified formulas to digest them, no brand or batch picky. ASA belongs to ASA, ABS belongs to ABS, graded separately.
Pricing is evaluated item by grade, weather resistance rating, and melting index, with clear and actual prices. Exterior grade is just exterior-grade pricing, not one-size-fits-all.
Own production capacity plus downstream customers as a backup, stable pricing, not fluctuating with market trends.
The essence of recycling is not selling scrap, but turning dead money into active money.
Cooperative follows five steps of "replacing recycled materials with new materials": material reporting→ graded evaluation→ on-site receipt→ deduction of payment→ settlement and invoicing. Recycling payments are directly applied to Cologne new material payments, ASA direction corresponds to KONICE's modified plastic series.
Telling a true story. Last year, a factory in Ningbo that made rearview mirror housings had about 5 tons of ASA raw material mixed with a bunch of sprue material. The model changed color schemes, and the order was canceled. On our trip, they first picked out the ASA mixed in ABS for grading, then modified the weather-resistant ones for exterior trim. The recycled batch was directly deducted from the next batch of KONICE, about half offset. The row of mixing bags in the workshop was cleaned out, and the storage space was returned.
Good materials aren't afraid of not being picked up; the real worry is selling good materials as scrap.
ASA the brands we are familiar with: LG Chem LI911, LI912, LI913, BASF Luran S 776S, 796S, Techno-UMG TECHNO ASA S210B, AE65F10, SABIC GELOY series, and other mainstream exterior brands we have been accepting year-round.
Recyclable forms: stagnant original packaging, sprue gate material, extruded sheet/profile scrap, defective scrap parts, and inventory scrap. Special reminder—ASA sprue material must be separately packaged with ABS; mixing it with the weathering premium disappears.
- "Isn't ASA basically ABS?" The truth is that ASA follows the acrylic weathering main chain, with a high exterior premium, so mixing and selling it is selling cheaply.
- "Waiting for the model to restart?" The truth is, the exterior materials get foggier the more you use them, and the no-paint selling point is gone.
- "Who bids the highest price and sells to whom?" The truth is, ASA is treated like ABS, and what you get is the ABS price.
Handles the entire process with full formal processing qualifications, with weighing, recycling forms, and flow certificates corresponding, can pass environmental audits and ISO audits, and does not go to illegal small workshops
