Every year before the peak season, factories that make plastic toys and figurines start to get nervous: a batch of newly arrived TPR material goes on the machine, the surface first shows oil spots, then the color turns yellow, and finally the figurine breaks with a single twist — the entire batch is stopped on the line immediately.
Anyone who works with TPR knows, this material is SBS-based thermoplastic rubber, soft, moldable, and recyclable. It's relied on for making dolls, grips, and seals. But the larger the quantity and the broader the application, the more complicated the counterfeit brands become.
The main force of soft rubber in the toy circle
The name TPR is a bit confusing in the industry. In the context of toys and daily necessities, it refers to styrene-based thermoplastic elastomers, fundamentally SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer), mixed with oils and fillers. Injection-molding grade, recyclable, with adjustable softness and hardness, it is the main material for making soft rubber figures and overmolded parts.
The major foreign producers of SBS-based TPR globally, ranked by market share, are: Kraton in the United States (approximately 18% share, Kraton D series), TSRC in Taiwan (TAIPOL/Vector), and LCY in Taiwan (Diene series, single-digit share). Asahi Kasei, LG Chem, and Dynasol in Spain follow. (Caliber: market share, industry report)
Why does the toy industry favor SBS-based TPR? It can be injection molded like plastic, yet soft like rubber, and it can be repeatedly recycled and reheated. The resulting figurines have adjustable softness, are shatterproof, and safe to handle. By mixing different proportions of naphthenic oil and talc, you can adjust it from ultra-soft figurines with a Shore hardness of 20 to hard handles with a Shore hardness of 80, a flexibility that other elastomers cannot provide.
The auxiliary board covers both ends of soft and hard rebound.
What is TPR off-grade? SBS off-grade refers to the batch of factory-produced block copolymers where the styrene content or Mooney viscosity slightly exceeds the standard during factory inspection. Since TPR is a blended material, off-grade TPR still needs oil and filler added, so the issues with TPR off-grade are half in the base SBS and half in the blending.
Compare them side by side: the genuine TPR is so expensive that the toy's quoted price can't budge, recycled TPR frays and sheds powder, and big manufacturers' secondary brands just happen to fit the softness, hardness, and rebound requirements that toy factories need. To put it plainly, the secondary brand is made from the original factory's native SBS particles, with a slight mix of Meni or styrene; recycled material is made by re-pelleting leftover doll sprue material, which has already gone through heat once; regenerated material comes from waste plastic, and its hardness and toughness are unpredictable.
Korten D Series: High-end material with resilient and dry feel
Kraton in the United States is the pioneer of SBS chemicals, and the Kraton D series is its general-purpose SBS flagship. Its TPR base material is widely used in high-end toys and medical parts. Kraton's sub-brand has controllable styrene content drift, suitable for making plush toys that require rebound and a dry surface, while the top flagship brand is relatively stable.
Taiwan Rubber TAIPOL: A major Taiwanese player with large volume and wide reach
Taiwan Synthetic Rubber Corporation (TSRC) is a major SBS supplier in Asia, with the brands TAIPOL and Vector, producing adhesives and plastic modifiers. TSRC's secondary brand has a large volume and a complete range of grades, suitable for producing a wide variety of toys and daily necessities. The Mooney viscosity fluctuation range of their secondary brand is moderate, allowing injection molding factories to make slight formula adjustments to use it.
Another advantage of Taiwan Rubber is that its supply in Asia is nearby, with short lead times and fast replenishment. For toy manufacturers who schedule production according to peak seasons, stable supply itself is a cost advantage. Its subsidiary brand's labeling system is also clear, with the base material grade and oil filling ratio clearly marked, saving the purchaser from having to guess.
Li Changrong Diene: Cost-effective without picky exterior parts
Taiwan LCY (Li Changrong), the Diene series SBS has a solid reputation in the footwear and toy circles. LCY's sub-brand has outstanding cost performance and is used for ordinary figurines, coated toothbrush handles, and sealing rings—items that are not particular about appearance, have high usage, and are tolerant of mistakes. Attention should be paid to the oil filling ratio of LCY's sub-brand, and when changing materials, the oil must be recalculated.
Three drawbacks, all in the feel
Three pitfalls of TPR secondary brands. The first is the oil filling ratio. The softness of TPR entirely depends on the amount of oil added. Once the oil content of the secondary brand changes, the Shore hardness and surface stickiness change accordingly, and the feel when making figurines is off.
Another issue is surface frosting and oiling. If the secondary brand is improperly matched with oil, after placing the doll for two weeks, the surface will exude oil and turn yellow, which is a headache for toy factories. Another problem is powder and flake shedding. If recycled material is passed off as the secondary brand to make TPR, after injection molding, it will flake off with a rub and cannot pass the toy factory's appearance inspection.
There is also an implicit red line for toy parts: whether they pass environmental tests for phthalates and heavy metals. The secondary brand's base material is virgin SBS, so there is not much problem; however, some channels, in order to cut costs, tamper with oils and fillers, and the parts may exceed phthalate limits upon testing, leading to the entire shipment being returned. Therefore, factories producing toys for export must ensure that secondary brand materials brought into the factory come with environmental test reports.

Mark five lines, then go to the injection molding machine
1. First set the Shore hardness and oil filling; if the feel isn't right, everything is useless.
2. The surface dryness must pass; the plush toy should not get greasy after just two weeks.
3. Those who can't pass the unfollow test are most likely fakes recycling content.
4. Recalculate the oil ratio with the new base material; don't just follow the previous version of the formula.
5. The exterior parts carry the original brand, and the internal molded parts carry an additional brand.
There is a client in Huanggang that makes soft rubber figurines and overmolded toys. Previously, they used only genuine Taiwan SBS-based TPR, and the material cost couldn’t be reduced. Later, they mixed 20% of Lee Chang Rong’s secondary brand into the overmolded toothbrush handles and internal soft rubber parts. After recalculating the oil content ratio, the Shore hardness differed from the genuine formulation by less than one degree. The surface dryness passed the two-week no-oil test. The cost per ton of material was reduced by more than 500 yuan, saving around 200,000 yuan a year just from this item. This is the use of secondary-brand TPR—use genuine brand for visible exterior parts and secondary brand for invisible internal parts to reduce costs. Ningbo Kolon New Material Co., Ltd. has been producing imported SBS-based secondary-brand TPR for many years, and they can pre-check oil content ratio, hardness, and surface blooming before delivery.
