SSBR副牌,轮胎圈那条外人摸不透的鄙视链

There is an unspoken hierarchy of disdain in the tire industry: those who make cross-ply tires look down on those who make semi-steel tires, and those who make semi-steel tires look down on those who make motorcycle tires. But if you look higher up, the people who make green high-performance tire treads, no one dares to act casually—they use SSBR in their materials.

SSBR, solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber, paired with silica, is the golden rubber for low rolling resistance and high-grip green tires. If someone uses the wrong grade on the tread, the vehicle's fuel consumption and braking performance will be affected. This stuff looks no different from ordinary SBR by a few letters, but its value and threshold are significantly higher.

The difference between custom suits and ready-to-wear suits

SSBR is made by solution polymerization, with controllable molecular chain structure, allowing for customized vinyl content and styrene distribution for industrial production. Its difference from E-SBR is like that between a custom-made suit and ready-to-wear clothes: both are made of cloth, but the precision of the cut is completely different.

The major foreign manufacturers producing SSBR globally, ranked by market share, are: Arlanxeo (Buna VSL/SE series, fully owned by Saudi Aramco) with about 22% share, ranking first; Japan's JSR with about 15%, specializing in functionalized SSBR; Japan's Nippon (Nipol) produces low rolling resistance materials at its Singapore base. Kumho, Asahi Kasei (Tufdene), and LG Chem follow behind. (Caliber: market share, industry supply chain report)

Why is SSBR so closely tied to green tires? Traditional E-SBR tire treads paired with carbon black make it hard to balance grip and rolling resistance; SSBR paired with silica allows the molecular chains to disperse better on the surface of the silica, reducing rolling resistance and improving wet grip. This is the source of low rolling resistance and high grip. Electric vehicles require range and quietness, so the importance of the tread has been increasing year by year.

The secondary card is the one in the test chart where the line wasn't crossed.

How should we understand SSBR secondary grades? It has the same origin as SBR secondary grades: it comes from the original factory's solution polymerization line, where the Mooney viscosity or styrene content slightly exceeds the standard during the factory inspection. Because SSBR is used in high-demand areas like tire treads, the specifications for the premium grades are strictly controlled, and the permissible range for secondary grades is also smaller.

The secondary grade of the same SSBR batch usually has a Mooney deviation within ±5 points, and combined with a styrene content fluctuation of no more than two percentage points. The molecular chains come from the same lithium-based anionic polymerization line as the primary grade. To put it plainly, the secondary grade doesn’t have a different formula; it’s just that one indicator on the lab report didn’t meet the primary grade line.

Border remains the same: the secondary brand uses original factory raw rubber pellets; reprocessed material is regenerated from rubber scraps; recycled material comes from ground waste tires. For SSBR material, using the secondary brand in inner liner, bead filler, and general structural rubber parts is cost-effective; don't use it on tread surfaces that require high grip.

One more thing to remind: the last digits of the SSBR sub-brand numbers often hide differences in oil content and coupling methods. Simply placing an order based on the trademark 'Buna' or 'Nipol' is not enough; you need to check each detail against the test report, including the specific last digits, whether it is oil-filled, and whether it has a coupled structure.

Alang Xinke Buna: Longtime Partner of European Tire Manufacturers

Arlan NewTech is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Aramco since 2018. Its Buna VSL series is a long-established SSBR product, closely tied to several major European tire manufacturers. The characteristics of Arlan NewTech's secondary brand are standardized formulation documentation, good batch consistency, and traceable Mooney drift. For manufacturers making semi-steel tire carcasses or conveyor belts, using it instead of the primary brand is relatively reliable.

JSR: Functionalized Platform Focuses on Sensitive Items

Japan's JSR is one of the pioneers of SSBR technology. The functionalized SSBR platform is specifically aimed at low rolling resistance and electric vehicle tires. JSR's secondary brands mostly come from grade transition, characterized by precise microstructure and low impurities. It is important to note that the oil content and coupling degree of JSR's secondary brands are sensitive factors. Before making high-demand tread materials, these two items must have test reports.

Ruiweng Nipol: small-batch stable material with clean color

Japan's Nipol SSBR is mass-produced in Singapore, mainly targeting low fuel consumption tires. Its sub-brand has good color and gel control, so light-colored rubber and seals do not fog. The output of Nipol's sub-brand is not large, but the batches are stable, making it suitable for small-batch, high-demand rubber manufacturers to monitor and use.

All three pitfalls are related to the formula.

Three pitfalls of SSBR sub-brands. The first one is buying an E-SBR sub-brand as if it were an SSBR sub-brand. Just a difference of two letters, but the rolling resistance and grip are quite different. Using an E-SBR sub-brand for the tire surface can lead to safety issues.

Another point is not considering the coupling degree and branching degree. These two determine processability, and for secondary brands, these two often fluctuate, causing the rubber to stick to the rollers during mixing. Another point is not doing fumed silica formula verification. The compatibility between SSBR and fumed silica is crucial, and whenever a secondary brand is used, the dispersion test must be redone.

Remember five points, then start refining again

1. First distinguish whether it is E-SBR or SSBR, and don't use the wrong tread.

2. The three test reports for Mooney, styrene content, and oil content must all be complete.

3. If the coupling degree fluctuates, don't start the machine; sticky rollers are a minor issue, performance is the major issue.

4. After adding the white carbon black, recompute the dispersibility.

5. Don't skimp on the main brand for the tire surface; consider secondary brands for the lining and structural parts.

Shangrao has a customer who produces high-performance semi-steel tire tread rubber. Previously, they used only Alang Xinke's genuine Buna brand, and the cost of tread rubber couldn't be reduced. Later, they mixed 20% JSR’s secondary brand in the inner liner and belt areas, keeping Mooney deviation within four points. The rolling resistance and wear tests basically matched the data of the all-genuine formula. The rubber cost saved per tire was less than two yuan, and multiplied by the company's monthly production, that adds up to seven figures. This is the correct way to use SSBR secondary brands — maintain genuine brand quality in high-demand areas, and use secondary brands in general parts to bring costs down. Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. has been making imported SSBR secondary brands for many years, and they can help you check Mooney, styrene content, and coupling degree when the materials arrive at the factory.
