Find Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. | Selecting sub-brand material from a major imported factory

SBS This material has deeper waters than you think.

The same bag of pellets labeled SBS can differ by 30%. The cheaper bag mixed into the sole factory produces sole as hard as bricks, turning white when bent; The more expensive bag is made with modified asphalt, so the coil bounces back without sticking to the hand and doesn't collapse in summer. What's the difference? In styrene content, oil filling ratio, linear or star-shaped structure. To outsiders, it's all black pellets, making a world of difference.

What's even more frustrating is that some people sell SEBS mixed or over-oiled material as SBS. Soles made by shoe material factories collapse after wearing them; Membranes made by asphalt modification factories crack in winter from the cold. Bosses privately say: In SBS, cheap and good products are secondary; good and inferior products look exactly the same as the ones that are a real pitfall.

This article explains SBS clearly: what's the difference between it and SEBS, who holds the global market, and how to pick secondary brands to avoid pitfalls.

SBS stands for Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Block Copolymer. It is the ancestor of thermoplastic elastomers: at room temperature it feels like rubber, when heated it can be injection molded like plastic, no vulcanization needed, and simple process.

Its two main tasks are: first, shoe materials—making soles and insoles with moderate hardness and good flexibility; Second, modified asphalt, added to asphalt, so the road surface doesn't soften at high temperatures or crack at low temperatures. Then there's adhesives and toughening plastics.

Here, it's important to clarify a common misconception: SBS and SEBS are not the same thing. SEBS is the hydrogenated product of SBS; the butadiene segment in the middle becomes saturated ethylene-butene, which improves weather resistance, heat resistance, and UV resistance, but the price is higher. For outdoor and heat-resistant parts, choose SEBS; For ordinary soles and modified asphalt, SBS is enough and more cost-effective.

In this market, according to data intelo and several others, global SBS production capacity is highly concentrated, with the top five controlling about 40% of the market share. The top three foreign manufacturers are: Kraton (USA), Asahi Kasei (Japan), and LCY (Taiwan). LG Chem (Korea) and TSRC (Taiwan) are also in the same tier.

Let's clarify the definition first. A secondary brand is the part of the same manufacturer and grade that does not fully meet the official brand standards during factory inspection. There are four sources: starting and stopping the stock scrap, grade switching transition materials, batch of residues with slight excess in certain indicators due to process fluctuations, and auxiliary scrap scraps.

SBS sub-brand, fluctuations mostly occur in styrene content, Mooney viscosity, and oil-filled ratio. Here's a point to correct:

SBS sub-brand isn't cheap oil mixed; it's the styrene content and Mooney viscosity slightly crossed the line during factory inspection in the same batch of block copolymers from the original factory.

You need to clearly distinguish between it and recycled material. Re-made material is processed scraps and then pelletized, having undergone a thermal cycle, with molecular weight and elasticity dropping; Recycled material is recycled from waste elastomer and pelletized, with large performance fluctuations. The original SBS sub-brand is still a virgin polymer particle, with the elastic base of the block structure unchanged. Shoe material and asphalt use recycled material, so bending and elasticity are at stake.

Kraton from the US is a veteran player in the styrene block copolymer industry. According to Market Growth Reports and Dataintelo, Kraton has a global SBS production capacity of over 300,000 tons, ranking at the top with a complete range of grades including linear, star-shaped, and oil-filled types.

Its secondary brand features slight fluctuations in Mooney viscosity or fuel ratio, but the block structure and elastic base remain intact. For ordinary soles and general asphalt modification, selecting the right secondary grade can hold up well for bending and rebound.

Asahi Kasei Japan has an SBS grade called Tufprene, also known as the Asaflex series. According to public information, Asahi Kasei continues to expand production of styrene block copolymers, with deep technical accumulation covering both linear and high-flow grades.

Its sub-brand commonly fluctuates styrene content or flow indicators at the factory edge. For shoes and elastic parts with high requirements for appearance and rebound, select carefully selected secondary gears, with good hardness and bending in quality.

Taiwan Li Changrong LCY, synthetic rubber brand called Taipol, according to Dataintelo caliber about 7% market share, is an important player in the Asia-Pacific SBS market, used extensively in shoe materials and asphalt modification.

's secondary brand often has slightly deviating Mooney viscosity or oil filling ratio from the genuine brand. For large-scale shoe soles and asphalt modified materials, choosing the right secondary grade reduces costs while still performing well enough.

SBS sub-brand acceptance, focus on three key points.

First, check if the structure and purpose are correct—linear or star-shaped, oil-filled or not. The grades used for soles and asphalt are fundamentally different. Then check Mooney viscosity and styrene content, which determine hardness and rebound. If it drifts a bit, the sole becomes hard. Next, check the original factory packaging—large or small packages are fine, but the batch number and manufacturer must match to prevent people from passing off leftover or recycled SEBS materials.

Common pitfalls are: using over-oiled SBS as the sole, which collapses when worn; Or using non-oil-filled grades for asphalt modification, resulting in incorrect viscosity. Shoe material and asphalt are two different approaches; choosing the wrong grade means rework, no matter how cheap.

Cologne warehouse in-stock | SBS models to

Main recommended brands: Keteng, Asahi Kasei, Li Changrong

Main grades: Kraton SBS grade, Tufprene/Asaflex series, Taipol series

Packaging specifications: both large and small packages are stocked

warehouse stock usually ranges from 3000 to 6000 tons

Small parcel sub-brand stock 500-800 tons, containerized sub-brand stock 200-400 tons, large package material/ton package stock stock 2500-4800 tons

Supply guarantee: direct procurement from original factory and package

Here's a selection tip you can follow directly:

Elasticity and thermoplastic processing — first look at SBS, only choose SEBS for outdoor heat resistance;

High asphalt requirements for footwear materials—choose Keteng, Asahi Kasei, and Li Changrong;

Structure—linear or star-shaped, depending on the purpose;

Oil-filled—find different levels for both sole and asphalt;

Mooney viscosity and styrene content—determine softness, hardness, and rebound;

SEBS leftover material recycling—don't buy from SBS, make sure the sources match;

Large and small packaging—original factory packaging and batch numbers can be traced before signing;

Mass production—first make small batches of outsoles/rolls, retain samples, then scale up.

Tangshan has a client specializing in modified asphalt and shoe materials. Previously, they bought SBS from unknown sources for a cheap price. The resulting coils crack in winter, and the soles turn white after a few bends. Returning and redoing a batch of materials causes significant losses

Later, they switched to selected secondary brands from the imported major manufacturer SBS. The measured Mooney viscosity and styrene content showed very little deviation from the genuine brand, the coil didn't crack at low temperatures, the sole didn't turn white when bent, the rework rate was kept very low, and the cost per ton was even lowered.

That's the value of selection—SBS isn't about whether the particles look alike, but whether the bending and rebound work is effective. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has long handled SBS sub-brand materials for imported major manufacturers. Every year, they handle many cases of shoe material and asphalt modification. Basically, it's about helping you test whether it's 'soft, springy, crack' before mass production.
