Many people think PPSU is the kind of 'delicate' plastic — transparent, boilable, used for baby bottles, and so expensive that a single piece costs dozens of yuan, and you worry it might get scratched with just a touch. The truth is quite the opposite: PPSU belongs to the polysulfone family and is impact-resistant, able to withstand repeated sterilization, not afraid of boiling, steam, or gamma rays. It's not brittle at all.

What really gives bosses who make baby bottles and medical devices headaches is that the genuine brands are so expensive that the quotes make you tremble, the recycled materials turn foggy and yellow after boiling three times, and the mid-range materials that are 'cheap but can withstand disinfection'—where on earth can you find them? The answer lies in the sub-brands of large manufacturers.

PPSU: The one among the three polysulfone brothers that is impact-resistant and disinfectant-resistant

PPSU, polysulfone, the one among the polysulfone trio that is impact-resistant and sterilization-resistant (the other two are PSU and PES). Amber-colored and transparent, with a glass transition around 220 degrees Celsius, it can withstand repeated high-pressure sterilization, gamma radiation, and ethylene oxide. It is used for baby bottles, medical sterilization trays, dental instruments, and water dispenser faucets. It is more impact-resistant than PSU and tougher than PES, making it a favorite for medical and infant products.

The top three foreign companies globally, ranked by production capacity share, are: Solvay (now Syensqo) of Belgium with Radel R, holding about 30-40% of the global market; BASF of Germany with Ultrason P, holding about 20-30%; and Sumitomo Chemical of Japan with the Sumikaexcel series. These three companies form the first tier for PPSU virgin resin, followed by modifier manufacturers and domestic competitors. This ranking is based on production capacity share.

PPSU sub-brand: original factory native granules, don't force it if it can't pass certification

How did PPSU secondary grades come about? They are native pellets from the same grade and same polymerization line of Solvay or BASF, with identical molecular chains. They are only classified as secondary grades when, during factory inspection, certain indicators such as transparency, color difference, or melt index slightly deviate from internal control limits. There are four main sources: start-and-stop tail materials, transitional materials between grades, batches affected by process fluctuations leading to color differences or melt index drift, and tail materials from secondary lines.

The boundary with recycled material needs to be clearly explained in this line: PPSU used for medical and baby products requires resistance to repeated sterilization, no leaching, and no yellowing. Recycled material has already been heat-processed; after further sterilization, it can become cloudy and yellow, and may also leach substances. Reprocessed material fluctuates even more and cannot pass food contact or medical certifications. The secondary brand uses original manufacturer virgin pellets, and batches are traceable. It should be noted: PPSU secondary brand is suitable for general sterilizable parts, non-implant medical parts, and internal parts of baby products; for implants or critical parts requiring full biocompatibility certification, the genuine brand must be used. Solvay Radel R: Strong medical certification, sterilization trays and dental parts all recognize it

Solvay is the big brother in this field. Radel R is the benchmark brand for PPSU, with extensive medical-grade certification; it is recognized for sterilization trays, dental instruments, and orthopedic components. Its sub-brand is characterized by a strong foundation for disinfection resistance, used for general sterilization trays and water dispenser parts, making the sub-brand cost-effective.

Note: Radel R has both medical-grade and industrial-grade lines. Don't try to force the sub-brand onto implantable medical components; the sub-brand doesn't have the certification card.

BASF Ultrason P: Early layout for food contact and baby products

The second is Germany's BASF Ultrason P. BASF has an early presence in food contact and baby products; baby bottles, coffee machine parts, and tableware all recognize it. Its sub-brands are quite prevalent in baby products and food contact items.

BASF's grades are classified according to food contact and hydrolysis resistance. For baby bottles that undergo repeated boiling, the hydrolysis-resistant grade should be used.

Sumitomo Sumika Excel: High-end electronics, grades geared towards specialized applications

The third one is Sumikaexcel from Japan's Sumitomo Chemical. Sumitomo has distinctive performance in electronic-grade films and connector structural components, with PPSU grades leaning toward high-end applications. Its sub-brands can be seen in industrial and electronic parts.

Comparison of three companies: Solvay is strong in medical certification, BASF is strong in food and baby products, and Sumitomo is strong in high-end electronics. When choosing a PPSU sub-brand, first decide whether you need medical grade, food grade, or industrial grade, and then choose the grade number.

Three pitfalls of PPSU sub-brands: yellowing, disinfectant resistance, certification

First is yellowing. For making transparent baby bottles or transparent sterilization parts, if a secondary brand has slight color differences or a slightly higher yellowness index, the customer will judge it as yellowed during inspection. For transparent parts, measure the yellowness first. Second is resistance to repeated disinfection. If a secondary brand cannot withstand enough steam cycles, it will become foggy after boiling dozens of times. For sterilization parts, perform aging verification first.

Third, certification: food contact and medical-grade products need compliant certificates. You need to check whether sub-brands have corresponding certifications; do not use industrial-grade sub-brands for baby bottles. In addition, PPSU injection molding involves high temperatures, so drying and temperature control cannot be neglected. Large packaging is suitable for batch production of baby bottles and sterilization trays, while small packaging is suitable for prototyping.

First, check the grade; implanted parts and critical medical components use genuine certified materials. Third, conduct disinfection and aging resistance tests; sterilized parts must withstand repeated boiling. Fourth, verify food contact certification; baby products must comply with regulations. Fifth, dry according to the process card; high-temperature injection molding must not be done lazily.

There is a client in Nanyang that makes baby bottles and sterilization trays. Previously, they used non-Solvay genuine Radel, but the cost of a single bottle shell couldn’t be reduced. Later, they replaced the non-mouth-contact tray parts and secondary shell parts with the same grade's off-brand, which could withstand repeated steam sterilization and had transparency in the same range as the genuine brand. They tested the yellowing index, and the cost of bottle shells dropped significantly, while the key parts that directly contact the baby's mouth still used the genuinely certified material.

This is the measure for choosing PPSU secondary brands — the secondary brand still retains resistance to sterilization and transparency, while certification and yellowing are the dividing lines. Genuine PPSU is so expensive that quoting just the shell of a baby bottle makes your hands shake, and recycled PPSU becomes cloudy and yellow after being boiled three times. Large manufacturers' secondary PPSU brands can handle both repeated sterilization resistance and cost.
