International Major Manufacturer Sub-brand Series · 08 POM

01 A workshop conversation that settled the accounts

reconstructed a workshop conversation.

Engineer held up a polished gear: "This batch of POM gears has been running for three months. What material did you switch ?" "

Procurement flipped through the order: "Big factory sub-brand, 2,000 per ton cheaper than the genuine brand." "

Engineer put the gear down on the table: "2,000 cheaper, 50,000 per batch of gears in compensation." Say it yourself. "

Procurement fell silent.

POM is this kind of material: friction-resistant, fatigue-resistant, self-lubricating—gears, sliders, and transmission parts all rely on it. But it's also famously "a slight miss and it fails"—if the melt finger is slightly off, the gear precision becomes unbalanced; If the moisture content is higher, the output bubbles like silver thread. Genuine cards are expensive, recycled materials are hesitant; many people have fallen into this middle ground for secondary brands. This article thoroughly explains the global landscape of POM and the secrets of secondary brands.

02 Saigang plates, small but concentrated

POM, polyoxymethylene, commonly known as Saigang.

This thing is like a "movement component" in plastic: high rigidity, low friction coefficient, resistant to repeated fatigue, stable dimensions, used for gears, racks, cams, sliders, zippers, springs—almost anywhere precision transmission and wear resistance are needed. Copolymer POM has wide hydrolysis and temperature resistance, while homopolymer POM has even stronger rigidity.

Global POM supply is a small but concentrated circle. Based on production capacity and market share, the leading foreign giants are mainly three: Celanese, Polyplastics, and BASF.

Celanese is the global leader in POM and one of the few factories producing both homopolymerization and copolymerization; Polyplastics is Japan's main player in Asia; BASF is a long-established European brand. These three companies together account for the majority of global POM stocks.

03 Sub-brand isn't recycled material, it's sub-brand whose wear-resistant base hasn't deteriorated

POM Let me explain it first.

It's the part on the same manufacturer's and same grade production line, where some factory inspection indicators slightly deviate from the genuine standard—melt finger floats a bit, color difference is a bit, or ash content floats by one level. The molecular structure is aligned with the genuine brand, but the wear-resistant base remains unchanged.

Four sources: start-stop and stop-off head, grade switching transition material, batch with process fluctuations causing some indicators to slightly exceed standards, and secondary line scrap material. POM production lines require large investments, but the batch size isn't large, so sub-brand supplies are relatively tight in the market.

Boundaries are clear: genuine brands meet all indicators and have stable batches; Sub-brand base materials are consistent, with slight fluctuations in some indicators; Recycle material is processed scraps and then pelletized, having undergone one heat cycle, causing wear and fatigue performance to deteriorate quickly; Recycled material is recycled from waste for pelletizing, with large fluctuations. POM secondary brands can be used for general gears, transmission parts, and sliders; For precision gears, high-load transmission parts, and certified parts, don't skimp on this.

04 Celanese: The leader in mass aggregation and consolidation .

Let's start with Celanese.

This is the global leader in POM, ranking among the top in market share. Its strength lies in one point: it is one of the few companies worldwide that masters core technologies for both homopolymerization and copolymer POM. Copolymer lines have the Hostaform® and Celcon® trademarks, while polymerization lines have Delrin®—Delrin was originally DuPont's ace, later merged into Celanese as part of its business.

Hostaform/Celcon makes general-purpose and engineering-grade copolymer POM, using it for gears, fasteners, and transmission parts; Delrin makes homopolymer, which offers stronger rigidity and wear resistance, recognized in precision parts circles.

Celanese secondary brand features: complete grade, solid technical foundation, mostly general engineering-grade small floating materials. For general precision gears and ordinary transmission parts, its secondary brand offers high cost-performance and recognition.

05 Polyplastics: The familiar face of Asian Duracon

Let's talk about Polyplastics again.

This company represents Japanese POM and is a mainstay in the Asian POM market. The Duracon® brand is a familiar face in the POM community, with global production capacity in the hundreds of thousands of tons, with bases in Japan, Thailand, the US, and Nantong in China.

Duracon features stable size, low friction, fatigue resistance, and high recognition for precision transmission parts for automobiles and electronics. Domestic manufacturers of gears and small automotive parts often use Duracon as a common foundation.

Baoli's sub-brand characteristics: well-known Asian supply chain, widely circulated grades, mostly general-grade small floating batches. They make general non-high-precision gears, sliders, and structural transmission parts, and their sub-brands are quick to pick up.

06 BASF: A well-established European brand with uniform batches

The third company, BASF.

A German chemical giant, POM is called Ultraform® in its company. BASF's POM is highly recognized in the European automotive and industrial circles, ranking among the top globally in market share and caliber.

Ultraform series covers from general to modified, producing gears, bearing cages, and automotive interior transmission parts with matching brands. BASF's process control is meticulous, with uniform batches.

BASF's secondary brand features: narrow batch fluctuation, making general transmission parts that require stable mass production, so you can use them with confidence.

07 Drying and temperature control are POM's two lifelines

POM Secondary brand selection has several life-defying rules.

Drying is life. Before processing POM, if you don't dry until the moisture content meets the standard, the results will be silver threads and bubbles. Don't throw the drying pot into the feed.

Recognize the melting fingers. Gear parts should have low melt fingers to ensure wear resistance; thin-walled parts should have high melt fingers to ensure flow; if you miss the precision, it will float.

Regarding the purpose. For secondary brands, avoid precision-grade gears, high-load transmissions, and certified parts. Generally, gears, ordinary sliders, and non-critical transmissions are where it is located.

Anti-decomposition. POM processing has a narrow temperature window; when the material temperature is high, formaldehyde decomposes and is pungent and damages the mold. Sub-brand materials have more impurities, so temperature control is even more important.

Check packaging to keep samples. Both large and small packages are available, batch traceability.

08 Seven mnemonics to block abnormal noises before mass production

mnemonic:

1. Precision gears, high-load transmissions, certified parts—genuine brand;

2. General gears, standard sliders, non-critical transmissions—secondary brands can be used;

3. Full coverage of homogeneous rigidity or copolymer universal applications—see Celanese Hostaform/Celcon/Delrin;

4. Want familiar Asian brands and small automotive transmissions—check out Baoli Duracon;

5. Stable batch production and worry-free mass production—check out BASF Ultraform;

6. Dry the product upon arrival until moisture content meets standards before machine installation;

7. Material temperature should not exceed the window to prevent decomposition and pungent smell

There is a client in Hefei, Anhui, who manufactures small automotive gears and mechanical transmission parts. Previously, they had a problem with POM: trying to save money, they bought a batch of "big-brand knockoffs" of dubious origin. The gears made from them produced abnormal noises on the machines after three months. Upon disassembly, the gears were worn into a fan shape. One batch had to be reworked, and the client claimed compensation, costing several tens of thousands. Later, they switched to using Baili Duracon's POM knockoffs for non-high-precision general gears and sliders. With actual melt flow alignment and proper drying procedures, the gear abnormal noise defect rate dropped significantly, the machine-installed lifespan returned to the standard brand level, and the cost per ton was also reduced.

If it produces abnormal noise immediately after installation and the gear surface wears into a fan shape after two months, using the wrong POM knockoff in the wrong place is like sending money away. This is the pain point of knockoffs—used in the right applications, they save money; used in the wrong places, they can be disastrous. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been producing imported POM knockoffs for years and has handled many cases of gear and transmission part material selection. In simple terms, they help you catch issues like "will it wear or make noise" before mass production.
