There's an invisible hierarchy of disdain in the elastomer industry: TPE people look down on SEBS companies, SEBS companies look down on POE companies. But you might not believe it, but the ones really chased by automaker engineers are the most "niche" segment in the circle—polyether block amide, or PAE.

Genuine Pebax can leave people speechless for a whole container, but PAE for structural parts doesn't dare to be mass-produced. Yet this "neither high nor low" material is fiercely sought after in the secondary brand market. This article will thoroughly explain the issue of PAE secondary brands.

1. What is PAE? How

PAE concentrated is the global landscape ? Its scientific name is polyether block implant (PEBA), a thermoplastic elastomer. Simply put, it embeds the hard segment of polyamide and the soft segment of polyether into the same molecular chain. The hard segment bears strength, while the soft segment provides elasticity. The result is excellent low-temperature resilience, resistance to flexural fatigue, oil resistance, and chemical resistance, and it can still soften at minus 30 to 40 degrees Celsius.

There are very few manufacturers worldwide that can consistently produce raw PAE materials. In terms of market share, Arkema (France) dominates the market, while Pebax holds about 20% to 40% of the global PEBA market share (different institutions have different standards, with China holding a higher share); Germany's Evonik closely followed with the Vestamid E series, with the two companies together capturing over 80% of global sales; Switzerland's EMS-GRIVORY's Grilamid E series holds the third tier, and Japan's UBE also participates. This track is not open to just anyone.

Why is PAE so precious? Compared to TPU, it is more resistant to hydrolysis and oil, and even better at low temperature rebound; Compared to TPEE, it is softer but not sticky, and its density is much lighter. For automakers that are "not brittle at minus 30 degrees, constantly bent and unceasing, and lighter than rubber," PAE is almost the answer they can't avoid. And precisely because it can compete, the price of the official brand has never dropped.

2. What exactly is PAE secondary brand? Don't mix it with recycled material

PAE secondary brand is not a defective product with poor elasticity; it is original original particles in the same block polymerization process that fail to meet a certain standard during factory inspection. They have four main sources: starting and stopping the unit and tail material, transition material from grade changes, batch melting index or hardness slightly exceeding the line due to process fluctuations, and secondary line residue.

The key is to clarify: the molecular structure of the PAE secondary brand is exactly the same as the genuine brand, still original factory particles, except that the Shore hardness, rebound rate, or hue are half a notch off during testing, completely different from recycled and recycled materials. Recycled material is processed scraps and then pelletized, which has already gone through a hot history; Recycled material is recycled waste plastic, with poor performance. Packaging for elastomers like PAE is common in small packages, but also in large packages.

There are also tiers inside the secondary brand. For sub-brands of the same grade, the one with less bleaching is called a select pair, while the one with more bleaching is called a regular pair. The price follows the tier. For structural parts with precise size and appearance requirements, prioritize selecting the selected pair; For color-matched parts and internal buffer parts, regular pairs can also be used. This difference is so important to ask clearly before placing an order.

3. Arkema Pebax: The company that made PAE its signature brand

Let's start with the top leader, Arkema. This French company is the original creator of Pebax and also made PAE into high-end sports shoe midsoles, medical catheters, and automotive sealing strips. Pebax has a complete range of grades, from high hardness to ultra-soft, and also the bio-based Pebax Rnew series.

What are the characteristics of Arkema's PAE secondary brand? Because it is the largest, frequently switches grades, and has the most stable source of secondary brand materials. The most common is hardness levels that range one or two or slightly fluctuate in rebound rate. It's more than sufficient for automotive interior soft contacts, chassis sound insulation, and sealing buffers. It can't make medical implants, or flagship running shoe midsoles, but it is more than sufficient for mass-produced structural parts.

4. Evonik Vestamid E: The more "tough" type

Now, let's talk about Evonik Germany. Evonik's Vestamid E series follows a high heat resistance and hydrolysis resistance route, deeply penetrating automotive lightweighting and wearable seals. Its foundation is the long-standing polyamide engineering plastics business, so PAE is a bit more "tough" than others, with heat resistance and dimensional stability as selling points.

Evonik's secondary brand features clean batch sizes and minimal indicator drift, suitable for structural parts requiring dimensional accuracy and temperature resistance. The downside is that its volume is not as large as Arkema and requires a close eye on its production scheduling window for stable procurement.

5. EMS-GRIVORY GRILAMID E: Small but refined

The third company is Swiss EMS-GRIVORY. This company is a long-established polyamide powerhouse. The Grilamid E series has a solid reputation in precision small parts, electronics and electrical appliances, and automotive functional parts. Its features include extremely fine grade segmentation and excellent hardness gradients.

EMS sub-plates don't have a large quantity, but they excel in "quality"—they often produce materials with slight deviations in hue or melt flow, suitable for color matching parts, interior parts with less demanding appearance requirements, and small structural parts. If you want to find their sub-plates, you need patience and wait for batches.

6. When buying PAE sub-plates, the main pitfalls are these three points

First, don't use sub-plates to match the high-demand scenarios of the genuine brand. If the sub-brand can't make medical-grade or flagship running shoe midsoles, forcing it will only set up a minefield for the back.

Second, don't just look at the label on hardness. The most common drift on PAE secondary cards is in Shore hardness. A two-degree difference in the same grade results in a huge difference in feel, so you must test it before entering the factory.

Third, distinguish between original sub-brand and recycled material. Some people in the market sell recycled PAE as a sub-brand. Pull it to see if it's crispy, smell for burnt smell, and check if the cut surface is clean—then you'll have a good idea. Test suggestion: Melt finger, hardness, and rebound should be tested against the intended use, keep samples for batches, don't order based solely on price.

1. For PAE sub-brands, choose three main brands: Arkema, Evonik, and EMS-GRIVORY.

2. Don't trust labels for hardness tests; a two-degree difference completely changes the feel.

3. As long as structural parts are sufficient, don't hard-top medical and flagship parts.

4. Distinguish between original sub-brands and recycled parts; skip brittle, burnt, or dirty cut-off surfaces.

5. Both small and large packages are available, ordered according to workshop usage.

8. Final thoughts
