PA9T副牌,连接器这行的水,比你想象的还要深

The PA9T industry is more complicated than you might imagine. Even when both are labeled 'low water absorption, high-temperature nylon,' the price tags can differ by a factor of two, and the water absorption rate can differ by an order of magnitude. After reflow soldering, some remain unchanged, while others shrink into a lump. To outsiders, they all look like 'black granules,' but to insiders, the difference is like that between clouds and mud.

Manufacturers that make connectors understand this kind of pain the most. SMT connectors need to be mountable, heat-resistant, low in water absorption, and reliably insulated. If the wrong material is used, the plug can't be inserted, the housing warps, or the insulation fails, and a whole batch of boards is ruined. But genuine PA9T is so expensive that it makes buyers frown, and the market is filled with various goods that 'claim to be PA9T,' so a moment of carelessness can lead to disaster.

The root of the chaos is that many people equate 'sub-brands' with 'defective products.' This article will scoop out all the water from the PA9T line to see what sub-brands are really about and which foreign major manufacturers should be recognized.

PA9T: Low water absorption, connector-specific material capable of withstanding reflow soldering

PA9T is called poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) with the monomers being nonanediamine and terephthalic acid. Its carbon chain is longer than that of PA6T, so it absorbs less water and maintains stable dimensions; it has a high melting point and can withstand lead-free reflow soldering. It also has advantages such as good insulation, chemical resistance, and fast molding. It is widely used in SMT thin-wall connectors, board-to-board, and wire-to-board joints.

The landscape of this category can be summed up in one sentence—Kuraray PA9T. Kuraray's Genestar® in Japan is almost synonymous with this material. It's a low-water-absorption, high-temperature polyamide, and has been used for SMT connectors for many years, with grades available for thin walls and narrow spacing. Among foreign manufacturers, only a few large companies produce pure PA9T resin at scale, with Kuraray dominating the market. BASF and others have small amounts of PA9T/PPA grades, while more are obtained from modifier companies like LATI and RTP, which buy the resin and then produce modified materials. This is also an oligopoly category, according to the real industry hierarchy.

Sub-card General Knowledge: Being scolded as a defective product is actually a misunderstanding

Many people shake their heads when they hear 'sub-brand,' thinking it is a defective product. This is actually a misunderstanding.

The secondary grade is not a defective product, nor is it recycled material. It is a batch from the same manufacturer and the same grade, where some indicators did not fully meet the standards during factory inspection. The polymer goes through the same production line, with a molecular structure identical to the standard grade. There may be slight variations in dielectric constant, a half-shade difference in color, or a slight deviation in melt index, but it still consists of original factory particles and has not undergone secondary thermal processing.

Four sources: scraps from starting and stopping production, transition materials from grade changes, batches with slight fluctuations in certain indicators, and leftover materials from secondary lines. For the same grade, secondary grades are classified into premium secondary and ordinary secondary, usually priced lower than the primary grade.

Coca-Cola Genestar: PA9T this table, it sits at the head position

Genestar® is a heat-resistant polyamide independently developed by Kolon, with the PA9T series being its flagship. It has low water absorption, stable mechanical properties across a wide temperature range, and is resistant to reflow soldering, specifically designed for SMT connectors. The grades are detailed: GP2300S is a 30% glass fiber, halogen-free, flame-retardant V-0 grade, suitable for automotive and electronic connectors; GP2450NH-2 contains 45% glass fiber, suitable for board-to-wire connections and thin-walled connectors like USB.

Regarding the secondary grades, Genestar's secondary grades mostly appear in batches with slight deviations in hue or flow. For factories making general connectors and non-high-gloss parts, selecting the premium secondary grade still retains the low water absorption and reflow soldering resistance. Packaging comes in both large and small packs. A reminder: precisely because it is well-known, the market has the highest number of counterfeit 'Genestar secondary grades,' especially for insulating parts, which you should not take risks with. Make sure to verify the original factory and packaging, check the batch number, and, if necessary, test water absorption and CTI.

BASF: The Second Tier in PA9T Plate

Apart from Covestro, BASF can be considered one of the few companies that can still offer grades related to PA9T/PPA. Its strength lies in the complete set of polyamide and additive systems, matching connectors and electronic heat-resistant parts.

Its secondary brand material also comes from batch indicators that slightly deviate. The quantity is not large, but the formulation system is mature. For factories that have already done modification in the BASF system and want an additional supply source, its secondary brand serves as a supplement.

Modified factory camp: buy resin, match modifications, don't confuse it with original factory resin

There is still a large batch of materials on the market labeled 'PA9T', which are actually products from modification companies like LATI, RTP, and Ensinger—they buy resins such as Celanese's, then add glass fiber and flame retardants to regranulate. Strictly speaking, these are not the original manufacturer's sub-brands, but modified materials.

It's not that modified materials can't be used, but don't buy them thinking of them as 'original PA9T subsidiary grade.' The batch consistency of modified materials depends on the process of the modifier, which is a completely different matter from the original manufacturer's native subsidiary grade. Before buying, ask clearly: is this a subsidiary grade of a certain original manufacturer's grade, or is it a formulation from a modifier? Asking this in one sentence can help you avoid half of the pitfalls.

PA9T sub-label, first clarify whether it is original factory material

The pitfalls of PA9T sub-brands mostly come from unknown origins. First, ask clearly whether the source is a sub-brand from the original manufacturer or modified materials from a reprocessing factory—these two are not the same. Second, connectors are insulating components; water absorption, CTI, and flame-retardant levels must be tested, don't just look at the price. Third, test the reflow soldering temperature profile yourself, don't rely on verbal promises. Fourth, keep samples across batches, as thin-walled, narrow-pitch mating connectors require high consistency.

To put it bluntly, you can't risk the connector material; make sure it's verified before putting it on the machine.

PA9T secondary brand being criticized as defective is actually a misunderstanding .

Keep the mnemonic:

SMT connectors, low water absorption, reflow soldering resistant—use PA9T, don't use ordinary nylon;

Certified insulating parts, thin-walled narrow pitch—genuine brand, don't skimp;

General connectors, non-high-gloss parts—check the secondary brand, test insulation first, then mass-produce;

First, ask whether it's an original sub-brand or modified material, don't mix and buy;

Water absorption, CTI, and flame retardant tested batch by batch—don't just look at price;

Reflow oven temperature tested, samples kept across batches;

Original factory packaging, batch number required, small sample packaging, mass production large packaging.

Deyang has a client specializing in electronic connectors. Previously, I bought a batch of 'PA9T' at a low price and installed it without water absorption test. After reflow soldering, the connector curled and the plug-in wouldn't go in, so a batch of boards was returned by 30%. Later, I switched to imported Cola-Genestar sub-brand, first testing water absorption, CTI, and oven temperature curves, with the plug-in pass rate raised to over 98%, all insulation items passed, and the unit cost was even lower than the genuine brand. This means the secondary brand isn't unusable—you need to know what you're actually buying. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has long helped connector factories screen imported PA9T secondary brands. They handle many similar cases a year. Simply put, it's about asking and testing clearly during the sample stage to avoid shrinkage and warping after reflow soldering.

Connectors, wiring harness joints, SMT parts—who hasn't been tricked by PA9T? Is it because they buy modified material instead of the original brand? Or does the plug not fit after baking and the plug won't go in? Or is the moisture absorption rate so high that all the dimensions float?
