Every year, from the end of the year to the beginning of the next spring, factories making automotive nylon pipes start to have headaches: a batch of fuel pipe assemblies from the north ships, and when the weather turns cold, someone at the loading site brings back photos of cracked joints—the pipe wall is cracked, the joint is leaking, the production line is stalled, and so on.

The boss scolds the purchaser, the buyer scolds the supplier, and the supplier says, "You used this PA12 as PA11, right?" After all the argument, the conclusion is often that this material shouldn't have been cheap in the first place.

Essentially, there are only one or two companies in the industry that recognize PA11. It's bio-based nylon made from castor oil, with low-temperature toughness, fuel resistance, and impermeability—naturally made for fuel pipelines. Switch to some cheap, unknown source, and once it freezes at low temperatures, you'll see the color. Today, let's clarify the background of PA11, and also clarify whether and how to use sub-brands. What is

PA11? It's a small circle defined by castor oil ,

PA11 polyundecam, a monomer from castor oil. It's different from common PA6 and PA66: low water absorption, good toughness at low temperatures, fuel- and oil-resistant, impermeable, and lightweight. Automotive fuel pipes, pneumatic brake pipes, cable sheaths, sports shoe midsoles—these require cold resistance, oil resistance, and toughness, and it's especially suited for it.

Because of its special raw materials and high polymerization threshold, there are very few foreign players in global mass production. By market share and capacity caliber, comprehensive industry research reports and public company information (2025–2026):

1. Arkema (France): Rilsan® brand, pioneer of castor oil route, leading global PA11 production capacity and market share, accounting for about 70%;

2. Evonik (Germany): VESTAMID® Terra bio-based polyamide product tier, supplementing high-end applications of PA11/bio-based nylon;

3. EMS-GRIVORY (Switzerland): High-performance polyamide tier, together with the other two companies, holds a major share in the global high-end nylon market.

To put it bluntly, PA11 is an almost oligopolistic category. Arkema alone holds the plate in their hands and even built a bio-based factory in Singapore, boosting PA11 production capacity. For this category, discussing sub-brands requires first identifying the right factory—not just any cheap nylon can be called PA11.

PA11 sub-brand comes from is a completely different matter from ordinary recycled material

The logic of sub-brands remains unchanged: same device, same batch of polymer, all indicators meet standards and are labeled as genuine brands; a few minor indicators that miss the line are sub-brands. Common issues with PA11 secondary brands are melt fingers, molecular weight distribution, and tint deviations; the core indicator of low-temperature toughness is usually not much different—if it really is, it won't be able to leave the factory itself.

Four sources: start-and-stop tail material, transition material for brand number cutting, batch and auxiliary line scrap material caused by process fluctuations causing slight exceedances in individual indicators. These are original original polymer particles, with molecular chains identical to genuine grades.

The boundaries here are especially critical: PA11 secondary brands are original original materials; while PA6/PA66 recycled and sprue materials, although also nylon pellets, have water absorption, toughness, and fuel resistance are completely different things. Some people on the market pass PA66 modified materials as PA11 secondary brands, making fuel pipes that crack in winter from cold — this is not the secondary brand's fault, but the pot used as inferior goods. For fuel-resistant pipelines, distinguishing between the four types of materials (genuine, sub-brand, reused, recycled) is the basic skill for survival. Packaging should focus on large and small packages.

Arkema Rilsan®: The synonym for this category

talks about PA11 is inseparable from Arkema. French Arkema, Rilsan®, is its flagship PA11 brand, with seventy years of castor oil chemistry, with facilities in France, Italy, and the US. The new Singapore plant has increased global capacity by about 50%. Automotive fuel pipes, oil and gas transportation, electronics, 3D printing, biotextiles—most PA11 applications you think of are backed by Rilsan®.

Rilsan's® sub-brands mostly come from batches with slight deviations in hue or melt index, and the base material is still genuine castor oil PA11. It is suitable for general oil and gas transmission pipes, non-critical pneumatic pipes, sheaths, and non-pressure-bearing structural components. But for fuel pipes and safety parts certified by automakers, the genuine ones are still genuine ones; don't touch that line with secondary brands.

Evonik VESTAMID Terra: The substitute in the bio-based tier

Looking at Evonik again. Germany's Evonik VESTAMID® ® Terra series focuses on bio-based, low water absorption, and stable dimensions, complementing Arkema in the high-end bio-based nylon tier. Its advantages are chemical resistance, low water absorption, and dimensional stability, making it very suitable for precision parts with high requirements for size and oil resistance.

Evonik's sub-brand doesn't have as large a volume as Arkema but is stable in batches and solid quality. It's suitable for custom parts that are not mass-produced mainstream goods but require size and oil resistance. For non-certified industrial oil and gas pipes, using their carefully selected sub-brands offers considerable cost-effectiveness.

EMS-GRIVORY: Seiko-pai of high-performance nylon

Looking at EMS-GRIVRY again. The high-performance polyamide business under Swiss EMS follows a precision engineering route, producing high-strength, heat-resistant, and oil-resistant precision structural components. It is regarded within the global high-end nylon tier alongside the top two companies as a truly strong contender beyond the top tier.

EMS-GRIVORY's sub-brand is suitable for non-safety-grade wear-resistant parts, oil-resistant parts, and structural parts requiring moderate toughness and chemical resistance. Its quantity is not large, but the selected sub-brand is very reliable for automotive non-pressure-bearing pipeline accessories.

PA11 How to choose a secondary brand? The three gates from the pipeline factory

PA11 are pressure-resistant, oil-resistant, and low-temperature materials. When choosing a secondary brand, you can't just look at price—you need to pass the three gates.

First Stage: Factory Recognition. Rilsan® is the main product, VESTAMID® Terra and EMS-GRIVORY are secondary. The 'cheap PA11' with unclear origins is basically a trap. Second stage: Test low-temperature impact and fuel resistance. When the secondary brand enters the factory, first perform low-temperature drop hammering and oil resistance immersion, and only after passing the data. Third stage: By purpose. Certified fuel pipes and safety pressure parts should be genuine; Non-pressure delivery pipes, sheaths, and accessories are the only ones where secondary brands can be used.

Common pitfalls: Mistaking PA66 modified material for PA11 sub-brand, brittle and cracking in winter; Sub-brand without compatibility verification and layered with other nylon blends; Batch mixing, uneven wall thickness of the same pipeline. Anyone who makes piping knows that if a pipe cracks, the loss isn't just about material costs, but about the entire production line's downtime.

PA11 sub-brand selection formula

provide a set to pipeline factories:

1. OEM manufacturer certifies fuel pipes and safety pressure parts — genuine brand is not worth counting;

2. Non-pressure conveyor pipes, sheaths, accessories — sub-brand can be used;

3. First-factory identification: Rilsan® as the main body, with the other two as the echelon;

4. Conduct low-temperature shock and fuel immersion resistance tests at the factory; only sign if the data passes;

5. Don't pass PA66 modified material as PA11;

6. Don't randomly mix secondary brands with other nylons; test them first;

7. Batch samples can be traced, and materials used in the same batch are thoroughly used.

Quanzhou has a factory that makes automotive fuel pipe assemblies. To cut costs, they bought a container of cheap "imported nylon sub-brand" but didn't distinguish it was actually PA66 modified material. In northern winters, once loaded, the joints cracked from low temperatures. After returns, exchanges, and production line shutdowns, a single batch lost over a hundred thousand. Later, we replaced it with Arkema Rilsan's® selected secondary brand, which is only used for non-certified auxiliary delivery pipes. The certified fuel pipes still use the genuine brand, and returns for low-temperature cracking have been reduced from 9% to 0.2%.

This is the balance of PA11 selection—it's a small circle defined by castor oil, not a material that can be mixed in just by being cheap. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing sub-brand products for imported major manufacturers for years. They have calculated the accounts of "one cabinet of cheap materials, one winter of rework" to help you use sub-brands in non-safe, non-certified locations, while maintaining the bottom line with genuine brands. This is the way to save money and worry effortlessly.
