LDPE is 'exploded' in an autoclave under high pressure, while LLDPE 'grows' in a low-pressure gas-phase fluidized bed. Their molecular structures are long and short, respectively, resulting in films that are soft and tough. If you try to manage LLDPE using the LDPE approach, manufacturers of stretch film end up paying the cost of learning every year: a roll of film will break immediately, customers complain and demand compensation, and rework can amount to tens of thousands of meters.

Think about it, really think about it. LLDPE, the more you need to stretch it, wrap it, or resist punctures, the more indispensable it becomes. This article will explain LLDPE's gas-phase production background, the three leading foreign manufacturers, and how to choose secondary grade material, all at once.

The tough support grown in the gas-phase fluidized bed

LLDPE, linear low-density polyethylene. Its essential difference from LDPE is not the density, but the process and molecules. LDPE is formed under high pressure with randomly long branches, while LLDPE is produced in a low-pressure gas-phase fluidized bed, with a straight main chain and short, uniform branches, and higher crystallinity. Therefore, its tensile strength, puncture resistance, and tear resistance are all significantly higher than those of LDPE.

There is also a trade-off: it has a relatively high melting point, a narrower heat-sealing temperature window, and needs adjustments for film blowing. But precisely because of this toughness, it is consistently used in the tough layers of cling film, heavy-duty bags, stretch film, and agricultural film. Among the global LLDPE producers with leading capacities, foreign companies like Dow, ExxonMobil, SABIC, and Nova Chemicals have long been at the forefront.

By-product material: The index fluctuation of the same gas-phase fluidized bed

The origin of LLDPE by-product grades is similar to all polyolefin by-product grades and falls into four categories: start-and-stop head and tail material, transitional material from grade switching, batches with slightly out-of-spec melt index or density due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary lines.

The LLDPE category itself was industrialized and launched by Dow in the 1970s, with the flagship brand DOWLEX™ (Dow's signature linear polyethylene), as well as the metallocene-based ELITE™ and AFFINITY™. The second company is ExxonMobil. It follows the metallocene route for LLDPE, with representative grades Exceed™ and Enable™, copolymerized with hexene and octene of the C6 and C8 series. Its toughness and optical properties are both at the forefront, with a global LLDPE market share of around 20%, consistently competing closely with Dow.

The characteristics of its subsidiary brand are: The metallized grades are sensitive to processing, and the subsidiary brand mainly has variations in melt index, making it suitable for thin, puncture-resistant stretch films and heavy packaging. When choosing this subsidiary brand, first measure the melt index accurately, and it will run smoothly on the machine.

Nova Chemicals: The Tough Player Cultivated by North American Shale Gas

The third is NOVA Chemicals, a long-established polyethylene manufacturer in Canada. It relies on low-cost shale gas in North America, with the representative brands SCLAIR® and SURPASS®, specializing in high-performance film-grade LLDPE, known for high toughness, high transparency, and good heat sealing, with a global market share of around 9%.

The advantage of its sub-brand is: it has many film-grade specifications, with a tough and solid base. Customers making stretch film and stretch-wrap film use it as a fallback, and even when the thickness is reduced, it is not easy to break.

Choose the secondary brand of LLDPE, remember the three numbers

In practice, for LLDPE secondary brands, we only focus on three numbers. First, let's talk about melt index deviation. For secondary brands of the same grade, melt index deviation is usually within plus or minus 0.5. The base material and the primary brand come from the same gas-phase fluidized bed; if it exceeds this range, the film will flutter on the machine. Next is density. A density difference of 0.003 can change the stiffness and feel of the film, and whether stretch film wraps tightly or not depends entirely on it. Finally, thickness tolerance. For blown film test samples, measurements are taken at three points, and the tolerance must be within plus or minus 5% to be considered qualified.

On the packaging, large bulk bags are suitable for continuous production lines, while small packages are suitable for trial runs and color matching. There's also a note: don't apply LDPE parameter experience to LLDPE—two different heat sealing temperatures, don't mix them.
