Many people think PTFE is an all-rounder among plastics—non-stick pan coatings, sealing gaskets, corrosion-resistant linings, as if it can do anything, any small factory can process it.

The truth is a bit counterintuitive: PTFE is a plastic that can't even be melt-molded. Its viscosity above the melting point is ridiculously high, and unlike PP or ABS, it simply can't flow into molds. It has to be pressed like ceramics—first the powder is pressed into a blank, then sintered at high temperature. The processing methods are all different, so what's the point of using it casually?

Even more unconventional is that this kind of "non-injection-moldable" plastic is actually the main ingredient in chemical anti-corrosion seals. In a chemical plant's pumps, valves, and pipelines, all those rings of sealing rings, gaskets, and packing inside are almost certainly made of PTFE. It can withstand almost all acids and alkalis, with temperatures from -200°C to 260°C, and a friction coefficient so low it's rarely seen in plastics.

Today's article thoroughly explains the global landscape of PTFE, how the three leading manufacturers and sub-brands use it in sealing components. What kind of material is

PTFE

PTFE it's polytetrafluoroethylene, a polymerization of PTFE monomers. The molecular chains are made entirely of carbon-fluorine bonds, making it especially stable—unaffected by acids and alkalis, solvent-insoluble, and resistant to extreme temperatures.

Its core performance can be summed up in three sentences: almost invincible chemical inertness, extremely wide temperature resistance, and extremely low self-lubricating friction coefficient. Sealing products use it to ensure "no leakage when pressed, no rot when soaked in acids or alkalis, and no wear when rotten."

But it has drawbacks: it cannot be melt-molded, has poor creep resistance (long-term pressure causes gradual deformation), and has a high coefficient of linear expansion. Therefore, PTFE seals often need to be filled with copper powder, fiberglass, or graphite modification to compensate for these shortcomings. To make anti-corrosion linings, you need sheet metal or lining processes, not injection molding.

Global PTFE producer: three major foreign companies dominate the high-end market.

By market share perspective, global PTFE supply is highly concentrated, with high-end pellets and powder markets dominated by several fluorochemical giants. The following three are the main suppliers that cannot be avoided.

The first, Chemours. Chemours was spun off from DuPont in 2015, taking over DuPont's fluorochemical business, and its flagship brand is Teflon. The word Teflon has almost become synonymous with PTFE. According to market research institutions, Chemours holds about 15% to 20% of the global PTFE market share and is recognized as the global leader. Its product line covers suspension resin, disperse resin, micropowder, chemical anti-corrosion, electronic insulation, and non-stick coatings.

The second company, Daikin Industries. Daikin Japan is a player in the entire fluorochemical industry chain, with Fluorite owning its own monomers, and polymers concentrated under the brand Polyflon. Daikin holds just over 10% of the global PTFE market and is the main force in Japan. Its strengths are PTFE dispersion resins and high-grade pellets, and it has built a new facility in Changshu to expand production. In semiconductor and high-purity applications, Daikin's products are highly recognizable.

The third company, 3M. 3M's fluoropolymer division in the US is called Dyneon, with the brand Dyneon. 3M holds about 123% of the global PTFE market share, focusing on disperse resins and specialty fillers, supplying automotive, electronics, and industrial seals.

Later that is Solvay (whose specialty polymer business was later spun off into Syensqo), whose Algoflon/POLYFON series holds a place in high-end anti-corrosion and specialty filler PTFE. Its market share is smaller than the previous few companies, but the brand is strong. Combined, these companies account for most of the global high-end PTFE market.

Sub-brand General: Where is the PTFE sub-brand ?

Sub-brand Principle: Same manufacturer and same grade, if some factory inspection indicators don't hit the lower edge of the genuine brand, it's the sub-brand. Four main sources—start-stop and start-up tail materials, grade switching transition materials, melt index (called melt viscosity or particle size for PTFE)/hue/molecular weight slight drift in batches and secondary line tailings. It is also original virgin resin, with molecular chains from the same origin as genuine brands.

PTFE secondary brands have a distinctive feature: they are not the "injection-molded-grade secondary brands" floating melt fingers, but rather focus on particle size distribution, molecular weight, and apparent density. Parts used as fillers and plungers are sensitive to particle size distribution; Parts made as molded gaskets are sensitive to molecular weight.

Boundaries still follow the same principle: all genuine products meet standards, batch quality is stable; Secondary brands have slight fluctuation in certain indicators, same base material; Reclaimed material is leftover material repelled and has already undergone a heat cycle; Recycled material is recycled waste and fluctuates greatly. Because PTFE is expensive, many people on the market pass recycled PTFE as a secondary brand, so be sure to check the original packaging.

Chemours Teflon secondary brand, how to use seals

Chemours Teflon's secondary brand mainly focuses on particle size distribution and molecular weight.

For ordinary sealing rings for chemical pumps and pipeline flange gaskets, these parts are less sensitive to particle size distribution, but Chemours secondary brands are very effective. For high-purity electronic-grade linings and semiconductor seals, these parts have strict requirements for purity and particle size, so use genuine brands and don't skimp. Chemours secondary brands mainly use large packaging and go to seal factory silos.

Daikin Polyflon secondary brand, choose high-purity parts with caution

Daikin Polyflon secondary brand, with specs similar to Chemours. But Daikin is strong in high-purity and electronic grade brands; its secondary brand is mostly used for industrial sealing and filler modification. For high-purity applications, use the official brand.

3M Dyneon's secondary brand, suitable filler parts

3M Dyneon's secondary brand is mostly used as a filler modifier for automotive and industrial seals. Its feature is that the filling system is mature, and the secondary brand is used for sealing rings containing copper powder or fiberglass, making it usable.

Pitfalls when choosing secondary brands: Three things to do with PTFE

First, distinguish the type of resin. Suspension resin is used for molding parts, disperse resin for impregnation and pressing; if the particle size grade is incorrect, the process is directly ruined.

Second, particle size and molecular weight must be tested first. When sub-brands of sealing parts arrive at the factory, these two items must be sampled and tested, not just the seller's guarantee.

Third, packaging comes in different sizes. PTFE sub-brands come in both large and small packages; small packaging samples are made, large packaging is mass-produced.

Selection tips and a real case study

PTFE For sub-brand particle size and grade, chemical pump seals do not leak when pressed, withstand acid and alkali bubbles for half a year without deformation, continuous feeding after machine operation without leakage, and performance between batches remains stable.

When selecting PTFE sub-brands, remember these five points: First, check whether the parts are sensitive to particle size; second, distinguish between suspension and disperse resin; third, check particle size and molecular weight; fourth, choose packaging size and packaging by batch; fifth, keep batch samples.

Let me share a case. There is a factory in Qiqihar that makes chemical anti-corrosion sealing parts, supplying pump sealing rings and flange gaskets to local chemical plants. They have always used genuine Chemours Teflon brand, with over a hundred thousand yuan per ton, and the cost of a single sealing ring material cannot be reduced. They once replaced a batch of cheap recycled PTFE for production, but the pressed rings leaked immediately after use, deformed after soaking in acids and alkalis, and the batch was returned by the chemical plant in batches. Later, we paired it with a sub-brand of the same Chemours grade, with particle size distribution within control range, molecular weight consistent with the genuine brand, and acid and alkali resistance and temperature resistance at the same level as the genuine brand. After switching, the cost of sealing ring materials dropped significantly, the machine ran for half a year without leaks, the acid and alkali bubble resistance did not deform for half a year, and the chemical plant accepted it in one go.

This is how PTFE sub-brands are used—diverting conventional seals that are not sensitive to particle size. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing imported sub-brands for years. For PTFE and other fluoroplastics, the ratio is adjusted quite a bit every year. Basically, it's to help you calculate the corrosion resistance and cost of the seal before mass production.

Who in chemical sealing, anti-corrosion lining, or gasket manufacturing hasn't been overpriced by PTFE? Is it that genuine brands don't dare to pay over a hundred thousand yuan per ton?
