There's an unspoken phenomenon in the wire and cable material industry: everyone is looking for low smoke, halogen-free and temperature-resistant grades, but very few actively mention EMMA. When this grade is mentioned, suppliers either say "this is in small stock" or quote a price for you to guess. Even with the same EMMA sub-brand, the price difference can be 30%, and the melting index jumps from 0.3 to 450, and someone dares to sell to you. The final insulation layer cracks at the slightest embossing.

To put it bluntly, the EMMA category is deeper than you think. Not because it's difficult, but because too few people know its details. Today, we'll break this category apart, clearly explain which factories are making it, where the sub-brand comes from, and how to choose it to avoid pitfalls. What is

EMMA, and why is it secretly used in cable coils ?

EMMA ethylene-methyl methacrylate copolymer, the name sounds similar to EMA and EBA, but the molecular chain is MMA—methyl methacrylate. This monomer has the following characteristics: a wider processing temperature than EVA, better thermal stability, lower odor, and stronger adhesion to polar materials than ordinary PE.

Its processing performance is similar to LDPE, but it offers better softness and transparency. In the cable field, EMMA mainly produces modifiers for insulation layers and toughening components for sheaths, especially in applications requiring temperature resistance, low smoke, and non-corrosion. Films use it as a base material for matte films, while hot melt adhesives use it as a high-viscosity component.

The global landscape is interesting: Sumitomo Chemical was the first in the world to mass-produce EMMA commercially, with the grade ACRYFT. Other major manufacturers have their own layouts in the ethylene-acrylic copolymer family, but suppliers of pure EMMA grades are few and far between. This is a typical oligopoly category—not everyone can do it, but there are very few people doing it.

What exactly is a sub-brand, and what's the difference from recycled materials ?

Before discussing EMMA sub-brand, let's first clarify the concept of sub-brand. Sub-brand material is the grade of products from the same manufacturer and grade that does not fully meet the technical specifications of the genuine brand during factory inspection. Note, these are still original original polymer particles, with molecular structure identical to the genuine brand, but some indicators—melt index, hue, light transmittance, ash content—slightly deviated from the nominal values during inspection.

It's completely different from recycled or recycled materials. Recycled material is the processing of scraps and then pelletized, and has already undergone a thermal history; Recycled material is recycled plastic pelletizing with large performance fluctuations. What about the secondary brand? For the same batch of polymerized products from the original factory, those that qualify and bear the genuine label are sub-brands. The four main sources: starting and shutting down the plant from the start and tail materials, transition materials from grade changes, batches with slight exceedances due to process fluctuations, and secondary line tail materials. So when choosing EMMA sub-brands, first confirm whether they are original factory and original grades, then discuss the price.

Sumitomo Chemical: ACRYFT, the defining of the EMMA category

Sumitomo Chemical's ACRYFT is the pioneer of global commercial production of EMMA. The product line covers general-purpose grade, film grade, extrusion laminated grade, wire and cable grade, and hot melt adhesive grade, with MMA content from 5% to 32% covering the entire range. Cable grade grades include WH303-F, MMA content 18%, MFR 7, specifically targeting wire and cable applications.

ACRYFT is characterized by low odor and good heat resistance. Sumitomo Chemical's own information clearly states: "only manufactured by Sumitomo." This means that within the EMMA subcategory, Sumitomo Chemical is almost the only large-scale supplier. Its sub-brand material mainly comes from transition materials when switching device grades—from film level to cable grade, during the intermediate transition phase, MMA content and melt index fluctuate, but the molecular chain remains EMMA.

When choosing ACRYFT secondary brands, the key is MMA content and MFR. These two correspond to your cable process; slight fluctuations in other indicators generally do not affect usability. Packaging comes in large and small packages. Large packages are suitable for batch mixing in modification plants, while small packages are suitable for sample production and small batch testing.

Arkema: Lotryl, a veteran in ethylene-acrylic copolymers

Arkema's Lotryl series mainly focuses on EBA and EMA copolymers, but it has a very broad presence within the ethylene-acrylate family. Lotryl EBA covers low, medium, and high BA content, ranging from 17% to 35%; Lotryl EMA also has a complete product line. Although pure EMMA grades are not Arkema's main focus, its experience in high-pressure radical polymerization has earned its sub-brand material a solid reputation in the industry.

Arkema's sub-brand is characterized by good batch stability. It has facilities in France, North America, and Asia, and the transition material flows into the sub-brand channel during grade changes. Manufacturers specializing in cable modification use Arkema's ethylene-acrylic copolymer sub-brand as a toughening agent, blending it into PE insulation to improve low-temperature impact resistance and adhesion. Note: Arkema's Lotryl sub-brand must distinguish whether it is EBA or EMA—their softness and bonding temperature range differ; if the cable extrusion process is incorrect, the cable extrusion process must be heavily adjusted.

DuPont: Elvaloy, a veteran player in specialty copolymers

DuPont's Elvaloy series mainly produces ethylene-acrylate copolymers and ethylene ternary copolymers, mainly producing toughening and modifiers. Elvaloy often appears in PVC toughening, oil modification, and cable material formulations. DuPont has polymerization units in Louisiana, Belgium, and Singapore, with sub-brand materials mainly sourced from process fluctuation batches.

Elvaloy sub-brand is characterized by stable toughening performance. Manufacturers of cable sheaths use it as a toughening component for PE, raising low-temperature brittle temperature and tear resistance. DuPont's grade system is relatively mature, and sub-brand materials usually indicate deviation indicators—such as melting index being high or low, so you can select them at your own process window. But note that some grades in Elvaloy contain ternary monomers, which differ from pure EMMA processing temperature curves. Try small batches before machine use.

Choose EMMA secondary brands, avoid three pitfalls

First pitfall: using EMA or EBA to pass off as EMMA. This is the most common trick in this category. The three categories have similar names but different ester bases—EMA uses methyl acrylate, EBA uses butyl acrylate, and EMMA uses methyl methacrylate. The bonding, temperature resistance, and processing temperature of cable materials all differ. When testing the sample, first check the melt finger and density, then use an infrared spectrum to confirm the ester type. Don't just look at what the packaging says.

Second pitfall: There is no upper limit to melt index deviation. The melt index of EMMA secondary brands may range from 0.3 to 450, a wide range. If your cable process window only matches MFR 2-7 grades and a batch of MFR 20 sub-brands arrives, the extrusion pressure will be completely different, causing the insulation layer wall thickness to go uncontrolled. Before receiving the goods, have suppliers report actual melt index measurements; don't just look at the label

Third pitfall: Put it on the machine without leaving samples. The MMA content of EMMA secondary brands may fluctuate by 1-2 percentage points between batches. When making insulation material ratios, this fluctuation affects the dielectric performance of the final product. Leave 1 kg sample per batch and properly label the batch number; if problems arise, trace them back.

Choose EMMA sub-brand, remember these five points:

First, check the ester base; infrared prior check is whether it's EMMA itself. Don't mistake EMA for EMMA.

Two pairs of melting fingers, actual measured values fall into your process window before receiving goods.

Triple-core MMA content, which level is required for bonding for insulation.

Fourth, keep batch samples, each batch is labeled, and any issues can be traced.

Five-point packaging: use large packages for mass modification, use small packages for sample testing and testing.

Lianyungang has a client specializing in low-voltage cable insulation materials. Previously, they used genuine EMMA sheath formulations, but the cost per ton of material couldn't be reduced. Later, they tested a batch of Sumitomo Chemical ACRYFT cable-grade sub-brands, with a melting index measured at 6.8 (rated 7), MMA content at 17.3% (rated 18%), and both key indicators within the allowable deviation. During trial production, the insulation layer pressed with no cracking, the extrusion temperature curve was basically the same as the genuine brand, and material costs dropped by over 1,000 yuan per ton. After half a year, the yield rate stabilized above 98%.

EMMA sub-brand is the slow-heating partner of the genuine brand—the same set of high-pressure radical copolymerizations is produced, but the methyl ester content and melt fingers didn't fully meet the line at the factory, so they can't be used for high-gloss exterior parts. But they excel at insulating cables and using hot melt adhesive as a tackler.
