There’s often a scene like this in the workshop: the purchaser holds a bag and asks the engineer, 'How different is EFEP from ETFE? Can it stick to nylon?' The engineer glances at the label: 'Where did you get this material? Can you just grab a non-standard brand of EFEP?' The purchaser is stunned. EFEP is exactly such an awkward category—its name is confusing, few people work with it, and when it comes to material selection, most people don’t even know whether it’s a three-fluorine or four-fluorine polymer. The standard brand is expensive and slow to deliver, and the non-standard brand is something hardly anyone has even heard of. Today, we’re going to tear through this layer of window dressing.

EFEP is a 'cuddly' fluoroplastic

EFEP is a ternary copolymer of ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, and hexafluoropropylene. It has a very unique temperament: its melting point is lower than ETFE, it has a wide processing temperature window, and it can be directly melt-bonded or co-extruded with general resins such as nylon, EVOH, or modified polyethylene, without needing ablation or primer. To put it plainly, it is naturally designed to give ordinary plastics a 'fluorine coating'—co-extruding EFEP with nylon to make multilayer hoses or films, the side with ordinary plastic is cheap and easy to process, while the EFEP side is chemically and oil-resistant. It is often seen in electronic flexible circuits and automotive multilayer fuel hoses.

In the case of the secondary brand, first recognize your own door.

The logic of EFEP secondary grades is no different: for original polymer particles from the same manufacturer and of the same grade, if the factory inspection doesn't fully meet the standard grade, they still come from one of these four categories: leftover materials from start-up/shutdown, transitional materials with a changed grade number, batches with slight deviations in some indicators due to process fluctuations, and secondary line leftovers. The molecular structure remains unchanged, they are original particles, only the melt index, bonding strength, and static level are slightly off in the test report. The boundary with regrind and recycled materials follows the usual rules:

In this category, it's basically Daikin that is carrying the main load.

EFEP is such a niche category that almost only one company is working on it. According to public information, Daikin (Japan, Neoflon EFEP RP series) is the main commercial producer of EFEP, this ternary copolymer, and the product page explicitly states that it is a polymer unique to Daikin. In other words, when it comes to foreign major manufacturers that can stably supply EFEP resin globally, Daikin is essentially the only one; the so-called 'EFEP' from other companies is mostly downstream grades that blend or modify Daikin's resin. This type of category cannot be strictly ranked in the top three—being clear about the different tiers is actually more responsible for procurement.

Daikin Neoflon EFEP: The Background of the RP Series

Daikin's Neoflon EFEP RP series focuses on 'melt adhesion with general-purpose resins.' Grades like RP-5000AS also undergo electrostatic dissipation treatment, specifically for feeding automotive multilayer hoses and electronic-grade applications. Its sub-brands commonly differ in melting point ranges or peel strength on nylon—factories making non-critical layers or general oil-resistant hoses use these sub-brands for material feeding, reducing costs considerably while maintaining adhesion. For automotive-certified hoses or antistatic electronic components, the original brand is still the reliable choice.

There is no second resin factory, what should we do?

Precisely because resin factories mostly only produce Daikin, EFEP sub-brands are rarely available on the market and are often of poor quality. This brings a practical problem: it’s hard to compare prices between multiple suppliers like you can with PFA. When you do come across a source for 'EFEP sub-brand,' the first thing you ask isn’t the price, but rather—whether it’s from the original Daikin factory, which RP grade it is, and how it differs from the standard brand. If you can’t answer those questions, no matter how cheap it is, don’t use it for flexible circuits, which are demanding in terms of cleanliness and adhesion. One more point: EFEP has a low melting point and a wide co-extrusion temperature window, which sounds good, but once the grade or batch is unstable, interlayer adhesion can quietly degrade during mass production. The peel strength measured in early small samples may not hold up in continuous production, so you can’t skip the step of retaining samples.

Flexible circuits and multi-layer tubes, don't gamble on the quality of a secondary brand

Key points to avoid pitfalls: 1. First, recognize the original Daikin RP grade; put a question mark on any 'EFEP' that is not from Daikin. 2. Check the melting point range and peel strength; co-extrusion bonding depends entirely on these two factors. 3. For anti-static grade parts, do not use ordinary secondary brands; the electrostatic dissipation level must be specified. 4. Because the variety is narrow and supply is limited, it is even more important to keep samples from each batch and conduct batch-by-batch re-inspection. Packaging remains the same; rely on the inspection report rather than the bag.

Use genuine brand for anti-static parts; discuss secondary brands only for ordinary oil-resistant tubes. 4. For narrow categories with limited supply, always keep samples from each batch.

A few final words. There is a client in Yuncheng who makes multi-layer fuel pipes and flexible circuit substrates for automobiles. Previously, in an attempt to save money, they bought a batch of EFEP sub-brand material of unclear origin. After co-extruding with nylon, the interlayer peel strength did not meet standards, and a batch of pipes delaminated during bench tests, costing over a hundred thousand yuan in rework and retesting. Later, they reformulated non-critical layers using a sub-brand of Daikin RP with the same grade according to melting point and peel strength, bringing the peel strength back within the design range and stabilizing production batches. This is the rule for narrow product categories—the less material you use, the more you have to take certificates of analysis seriously.
