EBA副牌,齿轮箱里那个被低估的增韧角色

Out of every 100 industrial plastic gears worldwide, at least 30 contain EBA in their formulas—but the vast majority of buyers don't know this. They only know they buy PA66 or POM, but the gears don't have enough impact resistance, become brittle at low temperatures, and are noisy. They spend a lot of money on modification factories adjusting the formula, only to find the problem lies in the toughening components.

Remember today's number: EBA's penetration rate in the industrial parts sector has nearly doubled in the past five years. Not because it's amazing, but because it solves an old problem—the compatibility between polyolefin toughening agents and polar engineering plastics. The suppliers behind this category might be quite different from what you think. What is

EBA, and why are gears and industrial parts favored by it ?

EBA ethylene-butyl acrylate copolymer. Ethylene is the main chain, and butyl acrylate (BA) is the copolymer. BA content ranges from 17% to 35%, with higher content making it softer and stronger in adhesion. It is similar to EVA, but BA's carbon chain is longer than VA's, bringing three characteristics: higher flexibility, better low-temperature toughness, and stronger adhesion to polar materials.

In the field of industrial components, EBA mainly does two things: first, as a toughening agent, it is incorporated into PA6, PA66, and PBT to enhance low-temperature impact resistance and cracking resistance; Second, they directly produce soft products, such as hoses, seals, and sound-absorbing layers inside gearboxes. Gear manufacturers use EBA-modified PA66, which does not crack at minus 20 degrees Celsius, and their meshing noise is significantly lower.

Global Landscape: Arkema's Lotryl EBA is the benchmark in this category, with the most comprehensive product line; ExxonMobil's Optema (EnBA series) is widely used in adhesives and cable materials; Dow's Elvaloy EBA focuses on toughening and modification. Together, these three account for more than half of global EBA capacity. Leanderbasel, SABIC, and Nordic Chemicals also have layouts, but their market share is in the second tier.

The four main sources of secondary brands, the boundary between the recycled material

EBA secondary brand, and the definition remains unchanged: batches from the same manufacturer and grade that do not fully meet factory inspection standards. The key indicators for the EBA category are BA content and melting index—BA content determines softness and adhesion, while melting finger determines processing fluidity. Secondary brands usually deviate slightly from the nominal value in these two items.

The four main sources: starting and stopping the plant, grade switching transition material, process fluctuation batch, and auxiliary line residue. EBA's secondary brand mainly uses grade switching transition material—from low BA content to high BA content, with the intermediate transition section BA content floating a few points, but the molecular chain remains EBA, and the toughening effect remains.

Boundary with recycled materials: EBA secondary brands are original factory polymer particles, unaffected by secondary heat history. Recycled materials are soft product scraps re-pelletized; BA may have partially decomposed and reduces toughening effectiveness. If a factory for gear modification uses recycled EBA, low-temperature impact resistance drops directly — the tooth surface cracks as soon as it is installed in winter. This calculation is hard to calculate.

Arkema: Lotryl EBA is the most complete product line among the

Arkema's Lotryl EBA, covering the full range with 17% to 35% BA content, making it the most complete product line in this category. Factories most familiar with toughening modification are low to medium BA grades—BA content 17%-28%, which are mixed into PA66 for gears and structural parts, with significant low-temperature impact resistance. High BA grade (over 30%) is mainly used for hot melt adhesives and adhesive tapes.

Arkema sub-brands mainly use grade switching transition materials for European and Asian units. The characteristic of Lotryl secondary brands is clear BA content labeling—suppliers will tell you the actual measured BA content of this batch, so you can choose according to your own toughening formula. Gear modification factories use Lotryl secondary brands with about 24% BA content and mix them into PA66, allowing the gear surface to be embrittized at low temperatures below minus 30 degrees.

Select Lotryl secondary brand: first set the BA content range, then align the melting fingers. The melting index window for industrial injection molding is generally 2-10 g/10 min; if the secondary brand's melt finger drifts out of this range, the process must be readjusted. Packaging is divided into large and small packages; modification factories use large packages for bulk production, and small packages for sample testing and machine testing.

ExxonMobil: Optema/EnBA, familiar with adhesives and cable materials

ExxonMobil's EnBA (ethylene n-butyl acrylate) series is widely used in adhesives and cable materials. Its characteristic is good adhesion to polar substrates—paper, polyester, polymer, PVC, can be bonded without primer. BA content can reach up to 35%, making it the softer and stickier tier within the EBA category.

EnBA sub-brands mainly come from process fluctuation batches in North American and Southeast Asian units. Factories making industrial components use EnBA sub-brands as toughening agents, blending them into PBT or PA6 for terminal blocks and connectors. Compared to Lotryl, EnBA's toughening effect is slightly inferior, but it has stronger adhesion—if your gears need both noise reduction and sealing, EnBA's EnBA grade is actually more suitable. Note: EnBA generally has a higher melt index, so for injection-molded gears, choose low-melt grade grades, otherwise if the mold is filled too quickly, there will be a lot of flash.

Dow: Elvaloy EBA, a long-established toughening modification formula

Dow's Elvaloy EBA, mainly focused on polymer toughening and modification. In PVC toughening, oil modification, and cable material formulations, Elvaloy is more famous than in the pure EBA market. Its main feature is high toughening efficiency—when mixed into engineering plastics, a small amount can improve low-temperature impact resistance.

Elvaloy sub-brand mainly comes from grad switching transition materials from American units. Factories making gears and industrial structural parts mix Elvaloy sub-brands into PA66, significantly improving tooth surface impact strength. Dow's grade system is relatively mature, and sub-brand materials usually indicate deviations from the indicators—for example, high melt index or low BA content; just select through the formula window. But note, some grades in Elvaloy are modified grades containing ternary monomers, which differ from the processing temperature curve of pure binary EBA. Make a sample before installation.

Choose EBA sub-brand, don't drag things out in action

Pick EBA sub-brand, don't wait until the goods arrive to inspect. These five action items should be completed before ordering:

Step one, set your process window. For EBA used for gear modification, specify the BA content range and melting index range from your formula sheet first. If you don't know, send the genuine grade material you currently use for inspection and use the measured values as the baseline.

Step two: Have the supplier report the measured values. BA content, melting index, and density—these three measured data are photographed and sent to you. Compare these three with your process window—if the BA content differs by less than two points, it's acceptable; if the melt finger floats out of the window, just reject it.

Step three: make a sample for the machine. EBA toughened PA66 for gears—if the formula is slightly different, the gear surface will be different. First, take a 1 kilogram sample and run two molds on the machine, check the tooth surface finish and low-temperature embrittlement data. Once it passes, proceed to mass production

Step four: Confirm it is the original factory grade. Occasionally, there are cases of LDPE mixed with EVA in the EBA secondary market being passed off—the toughening effect can vary greatly. When testing, use an infrared spectrum to confirm that the ester type is BA, not VA.

Step five: Receive by packaging. For bulk modification, use large packaging; for small batch samples, use small packages. Do not use large packaging material for testing—after opening, storage conditions differ, and both moisture absorption and oxidation affect toughening performance.

A Huzhou Gear Factory Project

Huzhou has a client specializing in automotive plastic gears. Previously, they used a formula of genuine PA66 plus EBA toughening agent to make gearbox components, but material costs couldn't be reduced. Their pain point was: during winter assembly, the tooth surfaces occasionally cracked, with a defect rate around 3%, and the compensation for returns was painful.

later switched to a batch of Arkema Lotryl EBA sub-brands, with BA content measured at 23.5% (rated 24%) and melting index measured at 5.8 (rated 6). Both key indicators were within the formula window. After readjusting the ratio and installing the machine, the low-temperature embrittlement temperature of the gear surface was reduced from -15°C to -28°C, and the winter assembly defect rate dropped from 3% to 0.3%. Material costs dropped by more than 700 yuan per ton, and the annual return alone cost about 200,000 yuan.

When choosing EBA sub-brand, first set the butyl ester content to the toughening level, align the melt finger with the extrusion temperature, and ensure compatibility with PVC before placing an order—don't just look at the price per ton and decide on it. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been working for years in the imported ethylene-acrylate sub-brand, with Arkema and ExxonMobil, Dow suppliers keeping up, and handling many cases every year for gear and industrial parts toughening formulas.

Gears, industrial structural parts, modified toughening formulas—who hasn't been tricked by EBA? Is it because the BA content is insufficient for toughening and not meeting standards, causing teeth cracking in winter? Or is it that using EVA to pass off EBA toughening performance is much worse? Or is the melt finger float too high and the flash in injection molding is uncontrollable?
