Its technical name is graft-modified polyolefin adhesive resin — by grafting polar groups onto the polyolefin molecular chain, it allows two materials that would normally 'never mix' to bond tightly when heat-pressed together. Where is it used? In the adhesive layer of five-layer coextruded films, aluminum-plastic composite pipes, barrier layer adhesion in food packaging, and for capacity enhancement. Simply put, it doesn’t make products itself; it acts as a 'matchmaker' for two different materials.

Globally, the foreign companies that are in this business and have scaled up the production of modified polyolefin adhesive resins are clear in the top three: ADPOLY series from Lotte Chemical in South Korea, ADMER series from Mitsui Chemicals in Japan, and MODIC series from Mitsubishi Chemical in Japan. These three basically form the first tier of industrial-grade polyolefin adhesive resins, with mature grade systems and co-extrusion process support. Following them are others like Borflow from Borealis in Northern Europe, but they lag behind in terms of circulation volume and certification accumulation. This ranking is based on production capacity and industry market share.

ADPOLY sub-brand, not cheap goods mixed with recycled materials

ADPOLY sub-brand essentially follows the same logic as all original factory sub-brands: the native particles produced by Lotte Chemical under the same grade and the same set of graft polymerization equipment, with the number of polar groups attached to the molecular chains, melt index, and adhesion, if individual indicators slightly deviate from the internal control line during factory inspection, are designated as the sub-brand. It is not cheap material mixed with recycled material, nor a downgraded formula.

The four main sources are still the same four: scrap from the start and end of production, transitional material when changing grades, batches with occasional indicator fluctuations due to process variations, and leftover material from secondary lines. We need to be even clearer about the boundary with regrind: regrind is when your factory takes scraps of composite film and re-pelletizes them, so the adhesive layer and substrate are mixed together, the distribution of polar groups is already messed up, and using it for the adhesive layer makes it impossible to control adhesion; recycled material is even more volatile. Off-spec material from other grades consists of clean pellets from the original manufacturer's first polymerization, and the batch is traceable. Regarding packaging, there are bulk and small packages, all in the original manufacturer's original packaging.

The main character is Rakuten Chemical. ADPOLY is a tacky resin developed using its own technology, available in both PP-based and PE-based types. The BP series and CM series are widely circulated. PP-based types like BP-402 are often used for food and industrial films, as well as aluminum composite tubes.

Mitsui ADMER: long-established brand, certified for food contact and oil resistance

The second is Mitsui Chemicals' ADMER, which is the world's earliest brand to produce polyolefin adhesive resins and has been in the market for decades. ADMER can be combined with PP, PE, EVOH, PA, PET, and even metals, and is commonly used in composite films and automotive fuel lines.

Its secondary brand material has a deep certification track record, and indicators like food contact and oil resistance are stable. Mitsui's approach is to classify grades very specifically, so the adhesive strength needs to match your barrier layer material—if you’re making an EVOH barrier film, use the grade dedicated to EVOH, don’t force a general-purpose grade.

Mitsubishi MODIC: tie layer with peelable seal, price range

The third is Mitsubishi Chemical’s MODIC. MODIC follows two technological routes: tie layer plus peelable seal. There are mature solutions for co-extrusion with PP, PVC, and PA. Its sub-brand circulates quite a bit in cost-sensitive applications such as industrial piping and packaging boards.

The difference between Mitsubishi and Mitsui is: Mitsui has an older brand and complete certifications, while Mitsubishi updates its grades faster and has a wider price range. When choosing a secondary brand from the three, first determine the substrate you want to bond and whether you are using PP wire or PE wire, and then discuss the grade.

Sub-brands like ADPOLY, three pitfalls are the most frustrating

First is the base material issue: PP-based and PE-based are not distinguished, and delamination occurs once put on the machine. Second, the melt index does not match the extrusion line; grafted materials are sensitive to the melt index, and even a slight mismatch in viscosity causes uneven adhesive layer thickness. Third, temperature and chemical resistance do not match: for making high-temperature sterilization films, the adhesive layer must withstand 121 degrees of sterilization; if tested with a normal room-temperature general grade, delamination occurs during sterilization.

In addition, before mixing multiple batches, a sample must be taken for peel strength testing. The peel strength of the composite film is the basis of the entire film. Separate large and small packages properly, and do not put large packages on when testing small batches.

This is the value of choosing a secondary brand for adhesive resin—sufficient bonding strength, sufficient temperature resistance, that's all you need, no need to pay for specifications you won't use. If you buy the wrong base material of ADPOLY adhesive resin, a five-layer composite film will delaminate after three days of curing, and the entire roll of bags will tear from the middle to the bottom; if you buy the right base material, the peel strength and boil resistance will be on par with the main brand, and after going on the machine, it can be continuously produced without rework.
