纯树脂级:透明本色,透光率保留得好,做净水器外壳、食品接触件、透明医疗壳体;
玻纤增强级:刚性和强度往上拉,耐蠕变,做连接器骨架、结构件;
碳纤导电级:掺碳纤防静电导电,做半导体载具、有防爆防静电要求的场合;
耐磨级:复配PTFE和石墨,做水阀阀芯、化工泵件,越磨越顺;
1. 先看件耐不耐水耐热:要长期泡水、反复蒸的透明件才考虑PSU,普通外壳别花这冤枉钱;
2. 食品接触件先认红线:使用温度一百二十一度以内,婴幼儿容器别碰PSU;
3. 透明件先问料源干不干净,黑点多了雾度一上来直接做不了外观件;
4. 医疗件走干净水口料降级使用,最要命的件还是原生医疗级;
5. 半导体和湿法件必过离子杂质检测,污染了硅片赔不起;
6. 价格先问原生大宗基准,再生低三成左右才叫划算;
7. 等级别买错,纯树脂、增强、导电、耐磨、膜级各干各的活;
In the plastics industry, PSUs are a mysterious figure—transparent, amber-colored, special engineering plastics that can be repeatedly steamed in a pressure cooker. A ton of virgin material sells for around 40,000 yuan, twice as expensive as ABS. Most peers in general-purpose material have only seen it in their materials.
But you might not expect: the casing of the instrument you used for dialysis, the case of the water purifier under your kitchen at home, the coffee filter in a coffee shop—the contents are likely not virgin PSUs, but recycled PSUs.
On one side is the high price tag of around 40,000 yuan per ton; on the other, medical devices, water treatment, and food contact are used abundantly—the recycled PSU market looks completely different from the phrase "low-end recycled materials." It's niche, but it's a high-value niche.
This article lays out the application map of recycled PSUs for you: which parts have they actually consumed, why do these components dare to use recycled materials, and where their main battlefield lies?
First, clarify the positioning of the materials. PSU, Chinese name: polysulfone, bisphenol A type, amorphous transparent structure, natural color is a light amber color, about 80% light transmittance, thermal deformation temperature of 174 to 180 degrees, long-term use temperature about 150 degrees, can withstand high-pressure steam repeated sterilization, hydrolysis resistance, inorganic acids and alkalis, and stable dielectric properties. Simply put, it is the heat-resistant contender among transparent plastics.
The logic of recycled PSUs is the same as all recycled materials: turn used PSU products back into pellets. But it's more valuable than recycled PP and recycled ABS—recycled PSU costs between 18,000 and 55,000 per ton, 30% to 50% cheaper than virgin bulk materials. The real money saved is the real reason downstream users are willing to use it.
From the perspective of absorption structure, medical devices consume about 35% of global PSU usage, making it the top downstream material for this material; Electronics and water treatment membranes each have their own plates. They don't compete with you on price; they compete on "this temperature and environment, other transparent plastics can't handle it."
Shaking your head at the mention of recycled materials? Medical devices are voting with their feet
When they hear "recycled PSU," many buyers react immediately: dialyzers and sterilization boxes, would you dare to use recycled materials? Impurities, discoloration, unstable batches—just thinking about it is overwhelming.
This worry isn't entirely unreasonable, but that's not how the accounts are calculated. The common usage in the industry is "downgraded use": clean sprue material and membrane shell scraps off medical device processing lines have a short heat history, have no blood stains, and are close to virgin quality; They are used for parts with slightly lower transparency and biocompatibility requirements, which is standard practice in the special engineering plastics circle, not the usual method.
Carefully Consider: Why are medical device factories willing to take it? Because the data for prototyping, validation, and sterilization cycles all match up, and the cost per ton of material is truly reduced. For dialyzer casings and sterilization boxes, a single batch of problems is called a recall. So the use of regenerative PSUs in the medical line is clean sourcing, retaining samples with goods, and matching batches—voting with your feet is never about sentiment, it's about keeping an account book.
Medical devices are the main sponsor of regenerative PSUs
The number one sponsor in regenerative PSU consumption volume is medical devices.
Supports for hemodialysis machine shells and hollow fiber membranes, surgical instrument trays and sterilization boxes, dental instruments and dental trays, valve connectors for respiratory anesthesia masks, blood filters and petri dishes in vitro diagnostics, medical tubing and heart valve accessories—all these components are within the PSU's reach.
Why choose these parts? Two hard requirements are met: first, it can withstand repeated steam sterilization—autoclave steams at over 120 degrees for dozens or even hundreds of times. PC fogs up and turns yellow after much use, but PSUs can withstand it, with hydrolysis stability even better than PC. Second, it's biocompatible, dimensional stable, and low creep—no matter how many times sterilized, the assembly seams still fit tightly. Hospitals have high temperatures, complex chemical environments, and very few plastics that are transparent, heat-resistant, and can be steamed repeatedly.
Most of these parts don't interact with consumers, but if anything goes wrong, it's a matter of life and death. So the use of recycled PSUs in the medical line is 'downgrading clean sprue materials'—leaving the most demanding virgin medical grade for the most critical parts, while recycled materials are placed next to the pallets and boxes, each in its proper place.
Water treatment and food contact: both ends are served
The second high-value plate of recycled PSUs, located on the water treatment and food contact line.
On the water treatment side, hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes and microfiltration membranes, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane components, water purifier casings and faucet housings, high-temperature water valves and pipe connectors—these parts need to be soaked in water long-term and must be acid- and alkali-resistant. The sulfone group in the PSU main chain is inherently chemically inert, so hydrolysis resistance is its signature feature. Membrane-grade PSUs are the main force here, and the scraps from membrane factories themselves are an important source of recycled PSU.
Food contact is even more interesting: components for coffee filters, milk pasteurization equipment, microwave tableware, and high-temperature resistant food containers. PSUs have status on the food contact material list: 80% light transmitted, visible inside, and resistant to hot water. But there are two red lines to remember: in China, the operating temperature for food contact PSUs must be within 121 degrees, and they cannot be used for infant food containers; If you want to use them for baby bottles, that's PPSU's territory, don't get it wrong—PSU is PSU, PPSU is PPSU, temperature resistance, sterilization cycles, and price are all on different levels.
Foshan has a client who makes water purifier casings and faucet covers. Previously, they always used native transparent PSUs, around 40,000 yuan per ton, kitchen appliance customers bargain once a year, and the profit margin was as thin as a blade. Later, they switched to a high-value transparent recycled PSU solution. Incoming materials are retained by batch, each batch passes light transmittance and hydrolysis resistance tests, and the transparency and raw packaging results are basically accurate. Passing drinking water testing and customer factory audits is no blockage. Cost per ton dropped by more than 30%, annual usage exceeds 100 tons, saving hundreds of thousands in material costs per year, and supply batches remain stable.
This is the value of choosing the right material—using recycled materials for transparent parts is not about whether they can be used, but whether the source is clean and the batch is stable. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has handled many cases in the modification and selection of recycled PSUs. Southeast Asia import channels are mature, high-value transparent materials are stable, and stock is sufficient. They take on many similar jobs every year.
The hidden champion in electronics and semiconductors
Besides medical and water treatment, the third major component of recycled PSUs is in electronics and semiconductors.
High-temperature resistant connectors and coil frames, PCB substrate parts and chip capacitors, 5G communication high-frequency connectors and transformer insulators, semiconductor wafer carriers and wet etching tanks, chip testing devices, sensor housings and contactors—these components share common characteristics: they must withstand long-term heat around 150 degrees, have low and stable dielectric constant, low ionic impurities, and do not creep in size. PSUs have a volumetric resistivity above 10 to the 15th power, low dielectric loss, and are excellent for high-frequency signal lines.
Semiconductors are even more particular: wet etching tanks must be soaked in acids and alkali for long periods, and wafer carriers must not shed ions to contaminate silicon wafers. These components cannot tolerate black spots or impurities, and before adding recycled material, sorting and filtering must not be skipped. Additionally, PSUs are not the kind of non-flame-retardant soft materials people think—they contain sulfone groups and have low smoke. Thick-walled parts can reach V-0, while thin-walled parts are mostly HB or V-2. When selecting materials, don't make false promises about flame-retardant ratings.
Five grades, each following its own path
Recycled PSUs are divided by modification direction, mainly several routes. Which one to choose depends on what your part will do:
Pure resin grade: Transparent natural color, good light transmittance retention, used for water purifier housings, food contact parts, and transparent medical housings;
Glass fiber reinforced grade: Increases rigidity and strength, creep-resistant, used for connector frames and structural components;
Carbon fiber conductive grade: Blended carbon fiber for anti-static conductivity, used for semiconductor carriers and applications requiring explosion and static resistance;
Wear Resistance Grade: Blended with PTFE and graphite, used for water valve cores and chemical pump parts, smoother the more it is polished;
Membrane Grade: Good film formation, suitable for hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes and microfiltration membranes
If you choose the right approach, the subsequent modification and color matching will be easier; if you choose the wrong approach, even the cheapest material will just pile up in the warehouse as inventory.
In Conclusion: Eight Guidelines to Handle Recycled PSU
1. First, check if the part is water- and heat-resistant: only consider PSU for transparent parts that are soaked in water long-term or repeatedly steamed; don’t waste money on ordinary casings;
2. For food-contact parts, first check the red line: usage temperature under 121°C; avoid PSU for infant containers;
3. For transparent parts, first ask if the material source is clean; if there are many black spots, haze will increase, making them unsuitable for appearance parts;
4. Medical parts use downgraded material from clean water gate sources; for the most critical parts, always use virgin medical-grade;
5. Semiconductor and wet-process parts must pass ionic impurity testing; contamination of silicon wafers is unaffordable;
6. For price, first check the bulk virgin baseline; recycled that is about 30% lower is considered cost-effective;
7. Don’t buy the wrong grade; pure resin, reinforced, conductive, wear-resistant, and film-grade each serve their own purpose;
8. For high-value parts, first do sample trials in small batches; once successful, scale up.
In Conclusion: Recycled PSU is essentially taking waste film housings, waste medical parts, and waste connectors and turning them back into pellets—its application map is no longer just a trash bin, as you might think. Dialyzer casings, water purifier housings, coffee filter housings—all fall within its domain. Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd. has years of experience in modification and selection of recycled PSU, with mature import channels from Southeast Asia, stable high-value transparent material sources, and sufficient inventory; they have handled similar cases over and over.
