再生PPO三大主战场:汽车要低吸水,电子要介电,水处理要过NSF

Downstream of recycled PPO comes down to three areas—automotive, electronics, and water treatment.

But these three areas require completely different things: cars need low water absorption and stable dimensions, electronics need low dielectric loss, and water treatment must withstand hydrolysis through NSF.

You use material used for electronic coil frames to make battery module insulation brackets, but when high temperature and humidity run high, the dimensions drift and the modules don't align properly; If you use material from automotive water chambers to make water purifier filter bottles, after half a year you won't pass the penetration test.

Got it mixed up, it's just batch returns.

This article goes through the three major battlegrounds one by one. After reading this, you'll understand why automakers are scouting for the same ton of recycled PPO, while water purifier manufacturers are holding prices low and still afraid to use it casually.

Let's settle the accounts first.

PPO is PPE, which is hard to process purely. Over 90% of the products on the market are modified alloys, with the mainstream being PPO/PS alloys, which is what people call MPPO. This material has low density, lowest water absorption among engineering plastics, and a low dielectric constant. It was born for low water absorption, stable dielectric conduct, and resistance to hydrolysis.

In the downstream map of recycled PPO, automobiles account for over 30% of MPPO usage, making them the undisputed financiers; Electronics and electrical appliances are the core market with the largest usage; Water treatment is a high value-added area that has emerged in recent years.

Together, these three have taken up nearly 80% of the business from recycled PPO.

To put it bluntly, recycled PPO essentially revolves around these three industries—whatever standards they want, the material looks accordingly; Whichever performance they block you is the money.

But these three companies have completely different temperaments: cars fear size fluctuation, electronics fear dielectric instability, water treatment fears failing drinking water certification. Understanding these three lifelines gives you a big picture of recycled PPO.

The lifeline of cars is low water absorption and stable size

In the automotive sector, PPO stakes are crucial.

Battery Management System Acquisition Board Mount, Battery Module Insulation Bracket, High-Voltage Connector, Charging Gun Insulation Housing, DC Fast Charging Port Module, Fuse Box Cover, Radiator End Cover, Cooling Fan, Water Pump Impeller and Water Chamber, Air Conditioning Valve Body, 77GHz Millimeter-Wave Radar Housing, ECU Electronic Control Housing—These components are either pressed onto the three-electric system or heat up with the engine compartment for a long time. If the size shifts by one millimeter, the whole machine assembly won't match up.

PPO Water Absorption Rate is at the 0.07% level, ranking at the bottom among the five major engineering plastics, which is why it can be considered a three-electric. Combined with hydrolysis resistance and flame retardancy, when soaked in coolant or placed in a damp heating box, only automakers dare to use it if the size and dielectric don't float.

What's even more critical is the policy knife: the EU's new ELV regulation 2026/1738 has already been implemented. Starting September 2032, post-consumer recycled plastics must account for no less than 15% of new car plastics, and from September 2036, no less than 25%. At least 20% of this must come from closed-loop recycling of end-of-life vehicles, with only post-consumer waste recognized. This clause pushes recycled PPO from "optional" to "mandatory."

In the Yangtze River Delta, a client making insulation brackets for new energy battery modules previously took parts from the domestic market. The injection-molded parts ran for 500 hours in an 85°C/85% humid-hot oven, increasing their size by 0.15mm. The entire batch of 20,000 sets was stuck on the customer's production line, and the seller immediately issued a batch cancellation. Later, they switched to automotive-grade recycled PPO for cross-border capacity allocation. Material sources are sorted from clean sprue material produced at Southeast Asian automotive electronics manufacturing bases, then returned to the domestic base for granulation according to the IATF system. After 800 hours of wet heat testing, dimensions increased by less than 0.05mm, and the batch rejection rate dropped from 8% to below 0.3%. The client directly locked the annual qualified supplier list.

This is the logic of automotive-grade materials—cheap is useless, but whether the size is stable, the batch is uniform, and whether it keeps up with the ELV rhythm—all three matters count when handed over. Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing modified PPO for years, sourcing from multiple Southeast Asian countries and mixing across regions from domestic bases, running dozens of batches a year. In short, it's about leveling out all the size, batch, and traceability pitfalls before mass production.

The lifeline of electronics and electrical appliances is dielectric and insulation .

In electronics, PPO is the most selective location.

Coil frames, terminal blocks, relays, switches, transformers, charger adapters, 5G RF connectors and antenna covers, router structural components, switch insulation housings, inverter housings, photovoltaic junction boxes, and server anti-static structural components—these components either run at high frequencies, have thin walls, or are directly adjacent to high voltage, with very demanding dielectric performance requirements.

PPO dielectric constant ranges from 2.5 to 2.8, which is the lower tier among engineering plastics, with extremely low dielectric loss and stability across a wide temperature and frequency range. This is the fundamental reason why they can fit into RF connectors and photovoltaic junction boxes. Plus, with low water absorption, dielectric performance won't drift due to moisture absorption in high temperature and humidity—this is a strong requirement for 5G base stations and outdoor photovoltaic power stations.

Flame Retardant This also needs to be clarified: PPO/PS alloys have a tendency to self-extinguish, and after modification can achieve UL94 V-0 or V-1. But don't assume all grades automatically have V-0; wall thickness and flame retardant ratings must be checked, and RoHS polybrominated biphenyl controls must also keep up.

What's the pitfall? If the previous generation of recycled material was old electronic components with halogens and couldn't sort cleanly, the whole machine factory would test for harmful substances accurately. So electronic-grade recycled PPO isn't just about low water absorption; it's about stable dielectric, clean impurities, and flame retardancy with wall thickness.

The lifeblood of water treatment is hydrolysis resistance and NSF

In water treatment, PPO is in a tough position.

Water purifier filter bottles, membrane end covers, pump cases and impellers, water meter housings and valve cores, faucets and showerheads, valve bodies and seats, dishwasher structural parts—these parts are either soaked in water year-round or must withstand alternating hot and cold conditions, causing leaks as soon as hydrolysis starts.

PPO hydrolysis resistance, it doesn't crack or seep easily when soaked in room temperature water, which is why it can penetrate filter bottles and valve bodies. But when it comes to drinking water contact, not just any pile of PPO recycled material can be used; it needs NSF 61 drinking water contact certification certification. Among the original grades, Noryl GFN3 multicolor passed NSF 61, but due to color restrictions, recycled materials need to verify both source and color separately to cross this threshold.

Here's the most easily confused point, which must be clarified: domestic national standards clearly state that recycled PPE, or PPE (REC), is not suitable for food-contact materials. In other words, recycled PPO is based on NSF 61 drinking water grade and industrial waterway standards. For food-grade products, recycled materials shouldn't force their way through—not because the material is inadequate, but because the policy gate simply hasn't opened.

To put it bluntly, water treatment grade tests not whether it can be used, but whether it can be leak-proof for three to five years and passing the drinking water gate.

The lifeblood of home appliances and office work is stable size and low warpage .

In home appliances and office work, PPO squatting may sound ordinary, but it's actually the most skill-dependent.

Microwave oven heat-resistant parts, washing machine pulsators and inner drums, printer and copier precision gears and structural parts, audio housings, low-VOC interior supports—these parts either have to withstand short-term high temperatures or have very strict dimensional accuracy requirements, and a bit of warpage can make the gear hard to catch. After

PPO modification, the thermal deformation temperature can be raised to 130 to 175°C. The amorphous structure has low shrinkage and minimal warpage, combined with low dielectric loss and no buzzing of audio components. This is why microwave oven heat-resistant parts and speaker enclosures love using it. Office automation accounts for about 12% of MPPO usage. The volume isn't the largest, but the unit value is stable.

Where's the pitfall? If recycled material has mixed colors and high ash content, the gear transmission gaps will float, and the speaker casing will have an ink smell—POPO combustion identification shows ink smell with a bit of bitterness. If the pelletizing isn't clean, the smell won't dissipate after injection molding.

To put it bluntly, the home appliance-grade test isn't about withstanding high temperatures, but about stable dimensions, minimal warping, and clean odor all passing together.

Four directions, one sentence to know everything

Up to this point, four common directions are clearly distinguished in one sentence:

Automotive-grade PCR-PPO, low water absorption, stable dimensions, meets ELV closed-loop requirements, specializing in BMS mounting seats, battery module brackets, and charging gun insulated housings;

Electronic dielectric grade PPO, low dielectric constant, flame retardant with matching wall thickness, coil frames, 5G RF connectors, photovoltaic junction boxes;

NSF drinking water-grade PPO, hydrolysis-resistant, NSF 61 certified, water purifier filter bottles, membrane shell end covers, water meter valve bodies;

Dimension-stable grade for home appliances, high and low warpage temperatures during thermal distortion, used for microwave oven heat-resistant parts, printer precision gears, and audio housings.

Don't use electronic-grade materials to fill car washrooms, and don't use ordinary recycled materials to touch drinking water parts. Use them in the wrong place; money is a small matter, but wiring shutdown is the real issue.

Selection tips, nine sentences to explain

After saying so much, here's a set of practical selection tips:

1. For automotive parts, first check the dimensional change rate of the wet heating box; don't try to buy cheap and bundled parts;

2. For the three electrical parts, check water absorption and flame retardant ratings side by side; don't believe "all PPO is V-0";

3. For electronic parts, check dielectric constant and RoHS together; don't wait for the manufacturer to test it;

4. For 5G and photovoltaic outdoor components, low water absorption ensures stable dielectric under high temperature and humidity;

5. For drinking water components, rely on NSF 61 endorsement; don't force it with ordinary recycled materials;

6. For food contact, don't force recycled PPOs—national standards are closed;

7. For home appliance gears and audio equipment, check warping and odors first, then check unit price;

8. For mass production, first look at consecutive batch records, then single batch data;

9. Recycled PPO with ridiculously low prices is assumed to hide pitfalls you can't detect.

Just these nine rules, remember: material selection in the three major battlegrounds basically never fails.

Final thoughts

The recycled PPO business looks like selling materials, but it's actually about selling steadily. The three battlegrounds each have different temperaments, but the same thing always comes down to one thing—whoever can control the material source and stabilize the batches will be able to enter the supply chain of major clients.

Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. relies on its layout of multi-country material sources in Southeast Asia and cross-regional allocation of domestic bases, linking overseas and domestic sorting and pelletizing capacity into a single line for major clients to mass-produce. What they want is the reliability of ordering today, receiving materials tomorrow, and ten batches as if they were one batch.

Interaction: What pitfalls have you fallen into with recycled PPO?

Injection molding, procurement, design—who hasn't been trapped by recycled PPO?

Is it that the battery bracket's damp-heat test size is too small? Or is the coil frame flame-retardant level not met? Or does the water purifier filter bottle fail NSF?
