1 Overview

1.1 What is Recycled PP

Recycled polypropylene (rPP, Recycled Polypropylene) is pellet material obtained by reprocessing polypropylene waste plastics through procedures such as sorting, shredding, washing, melt filtering, and pelletizing, mainly through physical recycling. According to the source of the waste, it can be divided into two categories: Industrial Recycled Material (PIR) — injection molding sprues, film/woven bag scraps, non-woven fabric offcuts, automotive part waste, etc., which are high in purity and have stable batches; Post-Consumer Recycled Material (PCR) — laundry detergent bottles, takeout food containers, dismantled home appliances, scrapped automotive parts, etc., which require deep cleaning and sorting.

1.2 Core Values

First, emission reduction: compared to virgin PP, each ton of recycled PP reduces carbon emissions by about 67% to 80%; second, cost: in 2025, the ex-factory average price of injection molding grade recycled PP is about 8,240 to 8,720 RMB per ton (depending on different statistical standards), lower than virgin materials; third, policy-driven: requirements for the use of recycled PP in China's new energy vehicles, the recycled content requirements in the EU ELV regulations, and the EU PPWR packaging recycled content requirements are all increasing, and demand is expected to rise in the long term.

3 Industry Classification System

Recycled PP does not have a unified 'grade' system; the industry usually classifies grades according to six dimensions: recycling source, national standards naming, industry grading, processing uses, formulations, and special certifications.

Melt mass flow rate (MFR, 230℃/2.16kg) is the primary indicator for grading recycled PP, directly determining the applicable molding processes and product range; batch fluctuations of recycled materials are generally controlled within ±10% to 20%.

6 Market and Trend Overview

The following data comes from third-party industry reports for 2024–2026, with significant differences in statistical scope (physical pellet output vs. total scope, recycled black PP vs. all recycled PP). When citing, be sure to specify the scope.

Production scale (various calibers): In 2025, China's production of recycled PP physical pellets is about 2.14 million tons (according to the China Plastics Processing Industry Association / Material Recycling Association, a year-on-year increase of 7.35%); there is also a full-caliber estimate of about 4 million tons. Recycled PP accounts for about 7% to 28% of total PP consumption (large differences due to caliber).

Application structure (2024 PP recycled black material caliber): Automobiles about 380,000 tons, home appliances about 420,000 tons, logistics and municipal totaling over 700,000 tons; PP recycled black material accounts for about 18.7% of the total recycled plastic production, making it the second largest recycled category after PET.

Automobiles (strongest growth point): In 2025, the consumption of recycled PP for vehicles will be 387,000 tons (up 21.3% year-on-year), and it is expected to reach 459,000 tons in 2026; for 12 types of non-load-bearing structural parts in new energy passenger vehicles, the usage ratio of recycled PP will be ≥15% (8% in 2024); automotive-grade thresholds: ash content ≤0.35%, MFR fluctuation ±1.2, tensile strength retention ≥92.5% (GB/T 44362-2025). The amount of recycled PP per vehicle for Nio ET5, Li Auto L7, XPeng G6, etc., is about 14.3 kg.

EU regulations (driven by external demand): According to the new ELV regulations, from 2032 onwards, new car models must have ≥15% recycled plastics, and by 2036 ≥25%, with at least 20% coming from the closed loop of end-of-life vehicles; the EU PPWR requires that by 2030, non-PET packaging in contact with sensitive substances must have ≥10% recycled content.

Food-grade progress: By 2025, China is expected to have about 37 companies with certification qualifications for food contact grade recycled PP (concentrated in East and South China); in the EU, governed by (EU) 2022/1616, EFSA certified processes are required.

High value-added proportion: About 28% of China's recycled PP is used in high value-added fields such as automotive and electronics, compared with about 43% in the EU, indicating significant room for structural upgrading.
